2002 Hyundai Accent GS 2dr Hatchback (1.6L 4cyl 5M)

Review

Purchased this car brand new in summer 2002, it was my first new car. I was young, didn't shop around a lot and basically got it because it was in my price range. I've been pleasantly surprised with it. Very reliable. Has been in the shop only for minor issues (the power windows, the rear wiper and a problem with the idle), all of which were covered by warranty. Great gas mileage on highway (av. 36)...only okay "mixed" (av. 26). I love my little car, though I'm thinking of trading it for something slightly larger that would be a little more comfortable on road trips. (I will miss the MPG if that happens!) Has been a reliable car that got me through college and is still going into adulthood.

Favorite Features

Reliability, highway MPG, easy to drive and easy to park.

Suggested Improvements

Needs more power when accelerating uphill. City MPG could be better on such a small car. Also would love to have an aux. input jack, but those weren't common in 2002 on most makes.

Purchased new and drove 90000 miles. Most of the issues occurred in ownership year 3 or 4. Exterior: perfect with the exception of peeling hubcaps and rusty wiper arms, interior the lights in the heater area would go on and off. 2 Warranty issues. Codes Check engine required sensors and through-out bearing replaced the whole transmission under warranty. Great car low cost to maintain, insure, fuel.

This was my first ever car! It recently got totaled in an accident (other persons fault). I didn't have on a seat belt and walked away with some minor bruises! This little car is safe reliable and GREAT on gas! I would have rode this car til the wheels fell off if it hadn't been totaled!

Bought the car in 2002 - first transmission oil change was around 45,000 mi, I changed the timing belt around 69,000 but the mechanic told me tha124,141,799t was still in good condition and changed the spark plugs and the belts for water and alternator around 90,000 mi; other than that just oil change (only synthetic) and tires. I have 107,000 mi and no problem I get 31 mi/gallon in city driving

cheap and reliable

This was like a go-cart because of it's size and power. A 1.4L is a weak engine, but I assure you it has pickup and I would whip this car around. I drove it hard, but not crazy. No major problems with anything though I have broke both door handles by pulling on them the wrong way. Regular oil changes and sensible (not conservative) driving have me at 92000 miles. I can tell the car is on it's way out though. There is a hole somewhere in the exhaust and I just have this feeling that a bunch of things are about to be worn out. Great buy, great car for 8k. Would definitely buy a Hyundai again, it's just simply worth the money (no headaches at 92000)

Favorite Features

Has some pickup in it's small size which is why I call it my go-cart. Excellent economy car. Regular maintenance and an accent should make it to 100,000. At 101,000 it probably just falls apart :)

Suggested Improvements

none, it's a cool car, and I'm very satisfied for the 8k I spent. I don't think it was possible to get more for the $

What a disappointment! I bought this car brand new with only a few miles on it from the test drive. In August 2008, I'd have owned the car for 6 years and have only put about 48,000 miles on it. As of last week, it sits dead in front of my house. One year after purchase, the Power Relay went (covered by warranty); in 2006 the engine was really loud, turned out to have a hole in the exhaust and needed to replace some sensors over the next several months- more than once! Had to replace the e-brake and have work done on other brakes in 8/06 as well. By 7/08, need e-brake again, check engine light on, timing belt broke while driving and wrecked the engine. Cheaper to buy another than fix this!

Favorite Features

Gas mileage not bad until the problems with sensors started.

Suggested Improvements

Build it better! This car is falling apart despite regular maintenance and hasn't even hit 50K miles !

Review

I bought my accent brand new and never have had any problems with it. I have always kept up maintenance in the car myself. It has never been in a mechanic shop or dealer shop for anything. I now(07/08) have 200,000 miles on it and it is still going strong even after driving it very hard its whole life. It seems like nothing will ever make it quit running. I have a very heavy foot and it doesn't ever phase it. There are also no oil leaks or burn off and has the original plug wires. I have also hit a wild hog and run over a curb at 55mph and it only bent the wheels and didn't cause any other damage. I still to this day get around 40 mpg on the highway and 35 in town.

Favorite Features

The manual transmission is very fun and gives the car a solid amount of torque.

Suggested Improvements

It would help to be better sealed for road noise.

I bought this car in 2004, it had 13K miles on it. Thank God I had at least half the manufacturers warranty on it. I had to have both power window tracks placed - I had to have the TP sensor replaced. I have regular maintenance on this car, I use it to get back and forth to work. I've put the average 10-11K miles on it every year. It has 54K miles on it now and it's in the garage getting the transmission rebuilt. I know this is a cheap but if you're having to replace your tranny after 50K miles you might has well just spend the money up front for a better made vehicle.

Favorite Features

Great gas mileage - that's about it.

Suggested Improvements

Make a better transmission.

Review

Bought car BRAND NEW in Oct 2001. At 99k miles had to have transmission re- built ($2500) Not covered under warranty due to loss of transmission maintenance papers (apartment flooded). Only other problems were, window actuator broke and window would get stuck down & at about 2 years old the spark plug wires melted and caused the car to slip and had to have towed to dealer to have fixed. Multiple trips to dealer due to check engine light on for no reason and had an A Pillar recall(had fixed). Car could be better, since transmission started going and still even after being re- built it shifts hard between 2nd & 3rd. Had to have dash panel background replaced, was disintegrating.107,500 miles now

Favorite Features

White dash panel (easier to see at night), BIG TRUNK, GOOD MPG (still get around 28-30 city and 35 or so hwy. Has get up and go! Easy to change oil and filter at home! Costs me less than $30 (lasts about 6-7 days) to fill the tank even at $3.23 a gallon.

Suggested Improvements

Better transmission, better cup holder placement (sticks you right in the knee), NEEDS MORE LEG ROOM IN BACKSEAT. ALOT OF WIND NOISE WHEN AROUND 50MPH+.

Review

Bought this vehicle when gas prices were going up and I didn't feel like feeding the SUV anymore. It was purchased from a dealership and had previously been a rental car. I've now owned it for 2 years and have put about 20K mi on it (roughly 60% city, 40% highway). I have done all the suggested scheduled maintenance, and I can honestly say that the car has been reliable. While it's not thrilling to drive, it makes a great city commuter car for someone on a tight budget.

Favorite Features

Great on gas, Fold down rear seat is handy, small size whips around the city with ease, roomy front seats, good visibility. Big trunk for such a small car.

Suggested Improvements

Road noise is loud at highway speed. Seats could use more cushion. Would like the option of RKE and Cruise control. Power window regulators all broke around 68k. Smoother ride would be nice. Sluggish acceleration on highway.
