Great car with good economy
Vehicle
1998 Hyundai Accent 2 Dr L Hatchback
Review
Bought it new, runs great, never a breakdown. Still gets 30+ MPG and has no mechanical problems. The manual trasmission is great, only wish it was synchronized, sometimes hard to get into reverse. Love the rack and pinnion steering as I have a great feel for the road conditions and traction that way. A Hyundai customer for life now.
Favorite Features
Unpowered rack and pinion steering and manual transmisson.
Suggested Improvements
Synchronize the transmission.

One of the Best Cars I've Owned
Vehicle
1998 Hyundai Accent 4 Dr GL Sedan
Review
Great Car - yes it had minor problems with cheap pieces of plastic breaking on the cup holders, etc. As long as you keep the oil changed and maintain the car it will treat you well. At 120K miles the transmission went out. For a couple years I lived in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains - I think it was too much strain on the car.
Favorite Features
Reliable. Good gas mileage.
Suggested Improvements
More Power. Some parts made of cheap plastic. Oil, air, gas filters etc. were not standard size and typically could only be found at auto parts stores and not at big box general stores (i.e. Walmart).

I bought my Accent brand new in 1998. I crashed in 2000 and brought it back to life. Since then I have changed the transmission, but I later found out after 2 other transmissions gave the same problem that the problem was electronic. All in all it has been a good car with fairly decent gas mileage and a lot of speed when it gets going on the island roads.
Favorite Features
Large cargo room, tight rack and pinion steering. Look reminiscent of 60's, 70's muscle cars.
Suggested Improvements
Faster takeoff, rear disc brakes, more leg room in back and the driver and passenger seats provide access to the back.
100,000+ NO PROBLEMS ! Still Going!!

Review
This car has been no trouble. For less than 5 years old and 100000 + its been great. I have replace tires once, spark plugs once. Regular oil changes. This car has never been serviced other then what was mentioned. I have driven this car hard the whole time. (Shifting at 5500 rpms most of the time) If it can endure me like this car has I call it either a fluke or a great car. This car was in Minnesota for 4 years of its life and was wonderful in the snow.
Favorite Features
Love this body style compared to other Accents wish they would bring it back. Heat and AC work fast and wonderful.
Suggested Improvements
gearing- prevents you from getting 36MPG at 70Mph. Paint on bumpers and wheels has begun to flake. 2.0L engine would be nice. Tilt/Telescopic wheel. More performance parts !! Slightly stiffer suspension.
Good fuel economy. Bad parts

Review
Nice design and economy with bad quality parts. After 56K miles, the (automatic) transmission went out and the resale price is too bad, so it is not worth to fix it. I am now looking for a more reliable vehicle (not a Hyundai). Maybe later models are better or at least the warranty will cover something like this.
Favorite Features
Fuel economy is UNIQUE! Beautiful design (better than the 2000 succesor) Roomy! this is like a little pickup!
Suggested Improvements
Use good quality parts (like transmission) Improve the passenger seat system to allow easier access to backseat passengers
A Good Car for a Great Price
Vehicle
1998 Hyundai Accent 2 Dr GS Hatchback
Review
The Hyundai Accent is a great little car for the price. It has a secure, relatively quiet and comfortable ride, is great on gas mileage, and has a solid feel and construction. A great second car for local commuting.
Favorite Features
Hatchback with roomy space for large objects (there's more space in this little car than big ones!) and of cource the gas mileage is great.
Suggested Improvements
A little more horsepower would go a long way. It would be nice if you didn't need to turn of the air- conditioning when you need to pull out on a highway.

I inherited this car from my elderly mom. I've put a good 35,000 miles on it. I like it, but my son calls it the "clown car" because it's small and purple. The engine died at 59,400 miles, only 600 miles before the warranty expired. The sheet metal is pretty thin. I removed some dents with the palm of my hand! My experience is good enough to seriously consider a new Santa Fe soon.
Favorite Features
Definitely the gas mileage.
Suggested Improvements
Thicker sheet metal. More comfortable seats. More sound proofing.

Stylish yet economical. The engine has guts on the road yet gets almost 40 mpg. I drive long hours and find it extremely comfortable. The sound system is great.

I bought this car in 1998 with less than 2000 miles on it. I am a construction worker and I have to travel a lot. It held up for the whole 4 years without a problem. It started every day without fail. It has sure seen a lot of construction sites that were not to favorable. Old faithful made it thru everything!! It gets 33 mpg without fail. I am very sad to have to part with it. It now has 85000 miles on it. The only reason I have to sell it is because I have outgrown the car. Too many tools now. The daughter is driving it now. Then it will go to my son to drive. Thanks Hyundai for a great little car.
Favorite Features
33 mpg is great to get nowadays. Especially if you drive a lot.
Suggested Improvements
A little bit more room in back for a person's legs. It's okay for kids in the back though.
