I also have a 2004 Honda Pilot, but I've had almost no problems with it - other than the sudden drop in mileage. It's a very basic model; I bought it used in 2007 and enjoyed up to 27 mpg on the highway, and usually 23 to 25 around town. I religiously kept up with the recommended maintenance, which can be expensive (e.g. right now it's due for a timing belt/fuel ... Read More
I can't see how it could be just the tires... I have a 2011 Honda Pilot AWD with 26K miles on it and drive it a lot on steep gravel roads in the Smoky Mtns. My 2007 Honda Pilot has the following warning lights on: VSA, ABS and Brakes. I took it to the dealer and it read the codes 53 and 121. They said the ABS module needed replacement. I'm looking to lease a 2012 Honda Pilot EX for 36 months and 12000 miles a year. I have a 2007 Honda Accord LX with 57400 miles on it that I'm trading in. What do you guys think would be a good deal if I'm putting $2000.00 down in the Dallas\Fort Worth area? Sales tax is 6.25%.
Ford does not own Mazda and never has. They had a 33% interest at one point, but that ended over 3 years ago. The CX-9 is one of the highest rated 7-passenger vehicles on the road. Is rated higher than a Pilot by Consumer Reports and consistantly scores well, if not better than the latest 7-passenger vehicles from Ford, GM, Dodge and Honda. Bottom line is the CX-9 is an excellent ... Read More
Well, after visiting way too many Mazda and Honda dealers in the area to try and get the best price I could, I wound up getting a 2009 Honda Pilot EX-L w/ approximately 30k miles. Same boat as you. Wondering which one you went with and how you feel about your purchase. I've owned Hondas before and held up amazingly. Never owned a Mazda and a little worried because Ford owns them. Help.
IMHO the Mazda is a better vehicle and has more/better features than the Honda. Long Term reliability always comes down the the individual vehicle but I think the Honda has the edge on reliability. I purchased a 2009 Mazda Trouring. My second choice was the Honda Pilot EX-L. I chose the better vehicle (handling, ride, braking, looks etc.)
Thanks bigrin! I'll probably keep this car until it dies, so my focus is a little less focused on holding their value and a little more focused on long-term reliability. I know Honda has the edge here, I'm just trying to figure out how big that edge is as the CX-9's keeping getting great reviews.....
Mellow, in same boat as you. Honda Pilots are harder to find. They hold their value big time. You'll have warranty on the Pilot and if you're keeping long term, I'd go that way. Although the Mazda has only 40K, it's value will drop more than the Honda. MHO, go with the Honda (swiss watch) you won't be sorry. Regards
Hi all, I'm looking for some input in comparing two used vehicles. I have a budget of around $20k and have found two vehicles and would like to hear people's thoughts: 1. 2007 Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring - It has 40,000 miles and all the bells and whistles. 2. 2009 Honda Pilot LX: It has 20,000 miles and is the base model. I can get both for around the same price. ... Read More
About extending a Pilot lease for another year while waiting for 2013 to come out. Yes - this Pilot deserves criticism. Honda overpromised and underdelivered. For a vehicle, which touts is safety, getting 4 stars is like getting a F grade in class As an owner of a 2007 Pilot EX-L and now a 2011 Pilot EX-L I agree in some ways that the new Pilot isn't as good as the old one. Any advice on whether this is the best way to go, or if it might be better to research other independent warranty deals out there? I'm not sure if the more current model years (2008-2010) are impacted by this problem?? Mixen- I will be paying cash(check) for the pilot buy out at this point. This will also be the first and the last car I ever lease again. Even with my low mileage requirements leasing still does not make sense unless you want to be stuck with a 400-500 payment the rest of your life. My financial independence is worth more to me at this point.
Driving a car for 10 years is almost always cheaper than leasing, so I would not fault you for going that route (pun intended). However, your calculations become much different when you factor in interest -- your $125.00 payment was considerably more. According to Honda, November 2008 sales of Pilots were up 4.5% over November 2007, although down 16% from year to year. This site is the only one that I've found with a lot of information on this kind of problem. I've recommended this site to our Honda service center. Our problem started happening last year around August ... Read More
I have a 2007 pilot in the shop due to an accident. It was hit on the passenger side taking out both doors and also damaging the part in front of the doors. It has been in the shop for a month, with the garage saying that Honda keeps sending the wrong replacement parts. The part in question is the piece of metal the front passenger door is attached to. Supposedly, ... Read More
Must be crazy to buy the 2009 Pilot. Cars always have bugs in the 1st year of production You know..i do prefer the i wouldn't buy a first year model to the must be crazy to buy the 2009. One imply you have a different opinion and the other that you are god and therefore know the truth and can judge other action..... oh and about the 8 seated passenger on ... Read More

I wanted to wait for a response from my last post before contributing this but darnit the forum just doesn't move fast enough. Most likely because this is one of the few forums where the naysayers outweigh those with actual experience. Btw, TY sparkland for your real world story regarding your camry alternator. So naysayers, please respond with your actual length of ownership ( some in the past have done so) And ... Read More
I have a 2005 Honda Pilot and am having the same problem. My Pilot has less than 25K and has been kept in good condition. The problem started happening last year around 8/2007. It has happened to me and my family three times now. The first two incidents happened while we were on the freeway. The brakes seem to lock up on their own. Each time it happened, we brought the ... The dealers I checked on still had lots of Pilots to sell or lease, the supply of the less expensive models seems a little lower than the supply of EX-L models. I am sure that varies from region to region and state to state. One dealer has over 30 in stock but just 2-3 VP models, another has over 30 as well but 5 VP models. Most seem to be top-heavy ... in all is glory, or ugliness, depending on your tastes. Here at the Honda web site I don't see or read about enough improvements that would make ME want to wait for it to arrive and pay MSRP (or close) when I would have the "old" Pilot for $2,500-$3,500 under invoice with cheap financing optional. 3" longer, larger interior volume, a bit more power and torque, VCM now on 4WD Pilots ... Hello, So I scanned through the Honda Pilot mini-site. Was so looking forward to this car and when I saw the redesign I just could not get into the Pathfinder look, I feel they took a huge step back in the styling department and I love Honda's. We ended up buying a Saturn Outlook after test driving the usual crossovers (CX-9, 2007 Pilot, Highlander) and we really are pleased, looks great, ... Read More

My apologies. Didn't mean it as a "boast" - more in terms of practicality: not all families can own 2 large vehicles, and hence be able to swap between them. For me, it is one or ... Read More
Took my 2007 Pilot AWD in for service. They changed the oil and differential gear oil. They also checked the transmission shifts and the fuel trim. No error codes for the transmission problems or the engine/fuel efficiency. The service writer did say he has driven the new Pilots and they seem "weird" to him, too, but he can't fix a problem that does not show-up on diagnostic. I need to call ... Read More
Many thanks! The point put forward about the AWD/4WD seems to be a plausible reason for the ghost vibrations in 2007-2008 Pilots. Your comments are very reassuring.
There are many 2007-2008 Honda Pilot owners complaining a lot about vibrations in the car. Some blame it to the 6-3 VCM, other to the suspensions and even the disc brakes, etc. So the previous Pilot was not a complete satisfaction for owners or a bad luck for some owners. I expect to buy a 2009 Pilot but I don't know if Honda has addressed all these vibrations of the previous ... Read More
