About 10 minutes after driving, the heat starts to blow out of the upper vents when the a/c is on automatic. The heat comes out even if the outdoor temperature is warm, which heats up the SUV quickly making it very uncomfortable. Turning the a/c off tends to somewhat solve the problem most of the time, however, occasionally hot air creeps through the vents even with the a/c off. The a/c ... Read More
Got a great deal on a tight 2003 Pilot with tow package and 135k miles. It has been used for towing before as can be seen from wear on the hitch and screw holes from what is more likely trailer brake controller. There is some limited information on this web page about knock sensor replacement on an 2003 Pilot that should help. The knock sensors are available for sale on the Internet from several companies, and it sounds fairly easy to replace. YOU WILL NEED TO REPLACE IT, TOO, as it is an important part and it generates its own voltage, so you cannot bypass it, or do without it. Your Pilot may well be okay, Mine was the first year that the Pilot was sold 2003 ~ and it's riddled with problems. Not sure when Honda re-designed the vehicle, but I hope for your sake that they built the 2005 better than the 2003 !! Good Luck. There really is nothing you can do to prevent a transmission failure if that's the way the car was designed and built.
My 2003 Honda Pilot has had seat belt recalls, air bag recalls, and has been serviced regularly. In fact, it had a scheduled service yesterday. Today ( with 122,000 miles on the clock, ) it decided to only reach 20 mph on the interstate, with me driving in the rain and dark, with my 11 year old son, coming home from swimming practice. That was a trip from hell. It took ... Read More
Has the windshield on your Pilot been replaced? RE: I hear a similar gurgling sound while driving in the rain on my 2003 Pilot after having the windshield replaced by a Honda dealership. 138K: Just replaced my transmission from my local Honda Dealer. They said I was very lucky have a transmission that longer 138K miles. Why would they be surprised? I sure hope not...I'm wondering if I should go trade it in after just replacing the transmission.
My rear shocks are leaking. Can I replace them with KYB's and keep the front stock? I will be selling the car soon so I don't want to replace all 4 and the KYB rears are cheaper than OEM Honda's. Will using rear KYB and stock front cause any ride issues? If I trade the car in will it hurt resale value? It's a 2003 Pilot EX-L.
Other than the leather seat issue I loved the car and never had any other problem with it, Rossi Honda in Vineland NJ was very good to deal with, I can't say that about the Honda company rep though, who wouldn't stand behind their product.
My 2005 Pilot is cracking on the bolsters as well. This is in part due to the low grade leather Honda used, and in part due to the nylon fake leather used where leather was implied to be used. Car had to be towed cost me 500 overall in rental car charges and repairs. Here are some questions Is it worth it persisting with this car? The dealer said starter might need replacing. It's about 600$ it needs timing belt ... Read More
Have a 2003 Pilot in my driveway now with 94K on it. Sale contingent upon hubby and mechanic's approval. CarFax says trans replaced by Honda dealership at 84K. Was covered under Honda certified warranty. That owner traded in 6 months later. Mechanic drove all weekend and didn't notice any transmission problems. Thought I'd done well, especially with brand new rebuilt transmission, but now am wondering. Will new trans take care of ... Read More
Honda is infamous on tranny problems, specially the 99-01 Odyssey - class action settlement.
I have a 2003 Honda Pilot, 115K. Recently, the "D" light on the tranny selector has started blinking intermittently. Trans works fine - so far, but, from what I'm reading here, I'm wordering if the blinking light is the sign of impending doom. I wouldn't expect Honda to put out junk, but I just had to replace my daughter's Civic transmission at 80K. Any input?
I just went through the same thing ... just 2 weeks ago or so. My story is in this thread somewhere. Anyway, 2003 Pilot ... had flashing D light which the service manager at Honda dealer told me he did not know what it was ... basically 5k miles later the transmission went. I did all of my servicing / repairs at same dealership ... they started with a quote of ... Read More
Hey gang, new to this site and was looking for information on the 2003 Honda Pilot. Mine just went out yesterday afternoon. Took it to the dealer for investigation today, but am 95% sure it needs a new transmission. Worst of all, my extended warranty just went out a month ago at 99K. I have 101K on it now. Has anyone had any luck with the "Goodwill Repair" or ANYTHING for ... Read More

Good question. I have a 2009 Honda Pilot and it is my third as I had a 2003 and a 2006. I had running boards on those but not on my 2009. I think they are a complete waste of money. Even if you are short or have children, they are an unnecessary expense because they don't add significantly to getting in and out of the vehicle. No matter what your ... Read More
I've been considering the new redesigned 2009 pilot and wondering if the transmission issue with Honda has been addressed. It's too new for failure so obviously there's not much complains. I tried to find technical data on the new transmission design and how it relates to the old design, there's not much info. On the old design, heat is the culprit, see NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 04V176000. Honda recalled 600,000 vehicle ... Read More
I have owned Hondas for the past 21 yrs and have owned both Accords and Civics. I sold my 1997 Civic and purchased my 2003 Pilot EX in May 2003 and have not experienced any problems with it, short of replacing the security key fobs. All I have had to do with it was the general maintenance. However, last month, at about 90k miles, I started noticing oil drops on the ... Read More
I recently read up on the Honda Pilot recalls as well as technical service bulletin. Should I have a mechanic @Honda look at this car prior to purchase? What scares me is the reliability of a Honda but then to read ATF leaks, ect. in recall and tech.;also electrical problems? Anyone care to steer me in the right direction before this purchase @10K? (after 1500 trade-in, 1k cash coupon, 1k cash ... Read More
I consider we inherited and pay for Honda's poor design.
My 2003 Pilot transmission went up at 138,000 miles. The dealer at the time quoted me clost to 6K to replace it. I went to an Aamco dealer instead, which was just short of 5K. However, that was a big mistake because within 15,000 miles I was back there with a bad torque converter.......went up with no warning stranding me late at night. Since then, I've had another torque converter go, ... Read More
I also have a 2003 Honda Pilot - bought new. It has always given me problems with harsh shifting between first and second – but, have been told this is normal. Two weeks ago while driving the transmission starting slipping – the “D” light is blinking and the engine light is on. The codes were pulled and it showed #P0470. I’ve always serviced my vehicle in hopes that I would get ... Read More
My 2003 Honda Pilot needs a new transmission too. When my "D" light started flashing about 5,000 miles ago the service manager at my dealer said he had no idea what it was .. okay to ignore it. Can only wonder if I had done something sooner perhaps it was not need to be totally replaced. If anyone gets a classaction suit going count me in! In the mean time, I ... Read More
I had the exact same problem with the same service history. Honda would not help at all and are unwilling to admit there is a problem with the 2002-2006 transmissions. They are not willing to stand behind their reputation. My mom got over 300,00 miles on her Accord, so I expected to get the same on the Pilot. I highly recommend you file a report with the NHTSA (www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov) This transmission ... Read More
Was Honda any help with your transmission? I could not get any help, with all these problems is there any class action suit? There was one in 2006 and I think it covered the transmission replacement then.
