I love my Passport, yeah I know it isn't a (true) Honda in reality an Isuzu but fun to drive all the same could get a little more power from the engine but the 4wd and construction of the vehicle are impeccable.

Favorite Features

4wd, Rear Axel (DANA 44!), Underbody protection I have scraped a lot of things under there, and interior

Suggested Improvements

small displacement turbo charged diesel engine lots of torque and about 250 to 275 hp, better front cv axles

I bought the 1999 Honda Passport because I had heard what great vehicles Honda made - well guess what it's not a (true) Honda -should have done my homework better! This has been the worse car I've owned, looking to get rid of it now! Replaced transmission 11/8/4, hmmm bought it 11/18/98. Everything seems to be breaking not only the major things but minor things too!!! Looking to buy a Toyota now....

Well, we're one of the ones that got a REALLY bad Passport. We got this car for my husband. We went with Honda because I've had GREAT experience with Acura and because of Honda's reputation. Passport styling is great, performance is crap. Dealer had to do a complete engine within months of purchase, problems occurred within weeks (rear wiper blades stuck, fuel injector leaks). Car burns oil like crazy--just not a reliable vehicle. We, too, are now stuck with a $300 per month payment and we've got many months to go before we pay this thing off. Currently, it is sitting at the dealer, undriveable--stalling and emitting white smoke from the tailpipe.

Favorite Features

Looks. It's comfortable, if a bit stiff.

Suggested Improvements

Improve the reliability

I purchased my Honda new. I drove it for six years. The only maintenance was oil changes, tires and a battery.

I've had this passport for over 2 years, and it has not disappointed me. I've done all the routine maintenance, and it has done everything I've asked it to. I drive offroad and a lot of highways, lately. While I'm not into really roughing it, I like to take rides into the desert in the winter. This is what I consider a real "ladylike" SUV (for me at least) - it looks nice, is easy to handle, I can run it through the mud, and then after a car wash, drive it to the office all week. Nice.

Favorite Features

I like the looks. The 4WD (again, I'm not an offroad warrier, just casual), and the size of it. It fits lots of stuff in the back, without being overly large. It's not a boat like the larger SUVs. Gas mileage not bad, for an SUV.

Suggested Improvements

Gas guage ... apparently it's a common problem for the gas guage to go out. Mine did. Other than that ... not too much to complain about.

Review

This is a fun vehicle. And, despite what a lot of people seem to complain, it has been supremely reliable. I bought this Passport over 2 years ago, used, and have done all the regular maintenance. I drive it hard over the weekend and during the week. A lot of highway driving to work. Weekends (when time permits) over 4WD roads in the desert or the mountains. It has needed predictable maintenance - the tires all needed replacing at once at 60,000 miles, but that was the life expectancy of the original tires. What else can I say - it's a great car to drive offroad, then run it through a carwash and it looks nice to go off to work or go out in.

Favorite Features

versatility. nice looks. comfortable. reliable.

Suggested Improvements

lot of little squeaks at times, like when the sunroof is partially open.

Just wanted to save some people the heartache of owning one of these. I bought the extended warranty on this vehicle and have gotten my money back and then some. Major problems: Transmission is sealed and very expensive to have serviced, shocks blown at 50k miles, leaks at door seals, ignition coils went out at 70k miles.

Glad it is gone.

The biggest problem for Isuzu/Honda on this vehicle is the brakes and the ABS pump. I suggest you get an extended warrantee if you can. Another problem is the rear hatch and its constant rattling. The truck has enough space when the seats are stoed to move a kid to college and back. I will consider purchasing the Isuzu Rodeo in the future. Overall this is a good SUV.

Favorite Features

Handles the snow and mud extrememly well, never gotten stuck.

Suggested Improvements

If you are into a stiff suspension try changing the stock shocks to match up with the springs. Heavy duty shocks will make the ride stiffer and make pot holes and off roading easier to traverse. Also look into purchasing a K&N Filter. You can feel the power difference.
