2002 Honda Odyssey Minivan EX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Bought new Feb 2002 - Took to dealer twice in Oct 2005 for transmission slipping at 35-40 mph. Dealer couldn't find problem. After evacuating from WILMA, transmission fails 6 hrs from home in Nov 05. Local dealer replaces under extended warranty (54,000 miles). Similar problems come back in Jan 07. Dealer finds nothing first two tries. - In Dec 07 dealer reports transmission is bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under extended warranty. (89,500 miles). Feb 08 extended warranty expires - Apr 08 problems resurface. May 08 dealer reports transmission bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under Honda parts warranty (1 yr). Google for more info on 02 Odyssey transmissions.

Favorite Features

Console layout is great. Ease of use, user friendly. Driver & passenger seats are comfy. Drives performs like a car. Great visibility since your sitting higher than a car. Leather seats a must! Easy to clean up after 3 kids! Folding 3rd row seats. Lots of room behind 3rd row.

Suggested Improvements

Honda needs to fix the transmissions and provide reliable rebuilt ones when the original fails. Improve comfort of third row seats. Reminds me of a school bus seat, not comfortable, especially on long rides. Replace the horn with something louder and deeper.

Review

The transmission on this vehicle is not better than the 1st generation of the Odyssey, in fact, they are worse. Honda quality is way way overrated. I think I will become a Toyota customer.

2002 Honda Odyssey Minivan EX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Review

I bought our Odyssey to replace a Nissan Pathfinder after my second son was born & we realized that the SUV was not going to cut it space-wise. We needed something that could pull our pop-up and lug all the things that a typical family hauls around for traveling together. So far the van has been excellent with no major problems and returns excellent gas mileage in comparison to our old vehicle. On one extended trip we averaged between 26 & 28 mpg. Short trips return around 18.5, which is about what our SUV got on the highway. The van drives well and at 240 hp, it has plenty of guts for merging, passing, and towing. Not as cool as my previous sports cars, but not bad and really handy.

Favorite Features

The ability to haul around 7 people in reasonable comfort or plywood & lumber if necessary. I brought home a new washing machine with the 2nd row seats in place. I love the VVT engine, very smooth and fairly powerful, reminds me of driving the Acura TL, which I believe shares that engine.

Suggested Improvements

The foam sides on the center tray cup holders are laughable and soon loose their resiliency. Honda should eliminate having the AC come on automatically with the Auto setting on climate control. It wastes fuel and wears out the compressor. Most customers can figure out when they want their AC on.

Review

This vehicle is now on its 4th transmission. Do not buy this or any other HONDA. It's a real lemon.

Suggested Improvements

Honda needs to design a transmission that works!!!!

2002 Honda Odyssey Minivan LX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Review

Bought this 02 Odyssey during mid 2002. Roomy, great V6 engine, everything was perfect. Great family vehicle for a few years until the transmission went out on us. It took us a couple of months argueing to get our transmission replaced as the dealer refused too since our warranty was "expired". Finally our transmission was replaced since the recall has been issued. Also wind noise was another problem. When cruising in highway speeds. Gas mileage was average. Overall this van is not that bad until the transmission problem kicked in.

Favorite Features

Performance and interior quality

Suggested Improvements

Hopefully tranny problems are fixed for newer models.
