2002 Honda Odyssey Minivan EX 4dr Minivan (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Review

The 2002 Honda Odyssey is an ideal family car and ours has managed to ferry us on many memorable trips. When it's not undergoing repair, we're happy with almost every aspect of the van. However, almost alone among Hondas, this particular model has had persistent problems with its automatic transmission. For us, the problem has recurred with EACH transmission installed to replace the original equipment. The initial transmission was the subject of a national recall (Honda Service Bulletin 04-021). We have also replaced the original tranny THREE times. No kidding!! We're very disappointed.

Best Features

In vehicle entertainment, seating and general comfort is excellent, though superseded by newer models. Very comfortable for long trips w/ a family of 4.

Worst Features

Transmissions are replaced with remanufactured products upon failure. Cost of a remanufactured tranny is very, very substantial. I doubt the reliability of these units, now given our three failures. Certainly, they're not up to Honda's usual advertised standards.

Review

Just got an estimate from the dealer for a new transmission in the amount of $ 5000 and that's with the old PCM (the computer module that dictates how the transmission shifts). It's another $1200 for a new PCM that will supposedly increase the life of these transmissions. This car is only 6 years old. The transmission should last longer in my opinion. I bought Honda because I thought they built reliable cars. This was a disappointment and I will no doubt look to other makes.

Best Features

Automatic climate control, heated seats, DVD player.

Worst Features

Build stronger transmissions and back it up with an unlimited mileage warranty like some other car makers.

We purchased this van new and now have 134,000 miles on it with no major problems. The body is in excellent condition with no rust and all features work well. We have been totally satisfied with this vehicle and will purchase another one.

Versatility (fold down rear seat, movable middle seats, fold down table, many cup holders, cargo space, and Honda reliability).

Worst Features

Compass, thermometer

Review

Bought new Feb 2002 - Took to dealer twice in Oct 2005 for transmission slipping at 35-40 mph. Dealer couldn't find problem. After evacuating from WILMA, transmission fails 6 hrs from home in Nov 05. Local dealer replaces under extended warranty (54,000 miles). Similar problems come back in Jan 07. Dealer finds nothing first two tries. - In Dec 07 dealer reports transmission is bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under extended warranty. (89,500 miles). Feb 08 extended warranty expires - Apr 08 problems resurface. May 08 dealer reports transmission bad and needs to be replaced. Covered under Honda parts warranty (1 yr). Google for more info on 02 Odyssey transmissions.

Best Features

Console layout is great. Ease of use, user friendly. Driver & passenger seats are comfy. Drives performs like a car. Great visibility since your sitting higher than a car. Leather seats a must! Easy to clean up after 3 kids! Folding 3rd row seats. Lots of room behind 3rd row.

Worst Features

Honda needs to fix the transmissions and provide reliable rebuilt ones when the original fails. Improve comfort of third row seats. Reminds me of a school bus seat, not comfortable, especially on long rides. Replace the horn with something louder and deeper.
