Summary

What Edmunds.com says

A large cabin, excellent crash test scores, a reputation for reliability and a high resale value make this our favorite minivan on the market.

Pros

Excellent crash-test scores, tons of interior space, fold-flat third-row seat, second-row seats can be a bench or captain's chairs, optional navigation system.

Cons

Transmission hesitates when downshifting, dearth of low-end torque, leather seating not available, no optional on-board entertainment center, slow power sliding doors.

What's New for 2001

Second- and third-row seats get new child seat-tether anchors, stereo speakers are upgraded, an intermittent feature for the rear window wiper is added and floor mats are made standard. LX models get a driver seat height adjuster and traction control, while EX models benefit from a new alarm feature for the remote control. A brighter Starlight Silver paint color replaces Canyon Stone Silver.

Review

We LOVED our Odyssey! It never had ANY problems in all of its 8 years we had it! At the time we bought it, we had 3 small children! Great on long trips! Easy to park! Very comfortable seating... We just traded it on an SUV (Acura MDX) to do better in the snow, here in Colorado.

Favorite Features

NAV, power sliding doors

Needs a moon roof!

Review

We have owned this van for 2 years, bought it with 113000 miles and have already spent 1800 on it. Now the transmission and catalytic converter are going out. I am so angry at Honda for keeping this van on the road.

Suggested Improvements

The transmission should be replaced and warranty for LIFE in this year van.

Review

Bought it new to replace a Plymouth Voyager. The Odyssey ranks right down there with Chrysler mini-vans in terms of reliability; radio electrically shorted at 40,000 miles, transmission at 65,000 miles, front wheel bearing at 70,000 miles, motor mounts at 95,000 miles, passenger door window glide at 105,000 miles (had a cold 600 mile drive home without a passenger window in January as it broke on the week end), driver side window glide at 110,000 miles. Honda paid for the transmission and I PAID for everything else. Total for other items = approximately $2000. Electronic doors "hang" at times but at least they work for the most part. A very nice van IF you don't mind the repair bills.

Favorite Features

Mileage in town (16 mpg) is not bad for a large mini-van. On the road it gets between 23 and 28 mpg. Has lots of power. Has lots of interior space for traveling and is quite comfortable.

Suggested Improvements

Improve quality of parts.

Tranny advice and comments

Review

Trannies are the weak link in ALL vehicles and especially VANS and MINIVANS. Most people don't realize this and push it to the limit abusing and breaking it prematurely. Be gentle with the tranny and will last much longer than did for others. Tip - find (feel) the changing spots and take the leg off the gas just before gear change. i.e. after 20km/h, 40,80)

Favorite Features

Let me tell you this - I HAD AN OLD Aerostar, NO A/C, nada things. And I had problems incl tranny (2x). YET I CAN NOT THINK WHAT TO WRITE HERE !!! I can drive and park the Aerostar like a bike, yet with the ody I struggle. STUPID pointy bumper? WHY? Gas HOG! (worse than my OLD HEAVY Aerostar)

Suggested Improvements

LOWER the freaking price or rise quality, fuel gauge stinks, Chairs are NOT comfortable, allow the dashboard to be used at least partially for some storage, stop idiotic radio code, ALLOW TO TURN DAYLIGHTS OFF FOR CANADIAN SIDE (what idiots did this?), body too frigging round - robs mirror visibility

Get 13mpg in city driving. Transmission went out at 90k. A good car, but the gas mileage is killing me.
