Would not be a bad van if not for transmission. Most other aspects of van are acceptable. However, I had to replace the transmission every two to three years. This seems to be a common problem based on the class action suits. My third tranny went after 120,000 miles, 10,000 miles out of extended warranty. When it ran, it wasn't bad, but I cannot depend on it.

We have had the transmission replaced twice and it's bad again. Honda knows it's bad but they won't stand behind it. We have had problems with the sliding doors not closing, the check engine light keeps coming on because of an EGR valve they can't seem to correct and had to have the wiring harness replaced and when they did it messed up the navigation system which hasn't functioned properly since the harness was replaced. Thousands of dollars worth the repairs. Total cost of ownership way too much for us and we have been Honda owners for 30 years. Time to look to another auto maker.

Favorite Features

Too many negatives to put anything here.

Suggested Improvements

Re-engineer the transmissions.

We bought our used 2001 Odyssey after our first child was born in 2003. It was reportedly one of the safest minivans on the market and we felt good about the purchase. Within the first year at about 90k miles, the tranny went out and the dealership replaced it. Two years and 40k later, the replacement tranny went out, this time we had to replace it. After only 21k miles on this tranny, it goes out and the dealership agreed to replace it but we had to pay the labor cost which was about $750.00. We did so and sold the van immediately after. We replaced this unreliable vehicle with a Lexus GS400 and have never looked back. If you are looking for reliability, stay away from this vehicle!

Favorite Features

Roomy interior, styling, third row seating.

Suggested Improvements

Honda of North America should have acknowledged and recalled all of these vans with the bad trannys. Instead, they continue to "soak" the consumer through the dealerships who are powerless to do anything except replace the trannys with more defective trannys.

We bought this van new because my 6ft 2in husband could fit comfortably. We owned 3 Ford Aerostars I loved. This van sits lower to the ground; I like high. No major problems but I don't understand why it likes to roll back on an incline. Dealer said that was normal. It can carry 4 kids in the back and 3 in the center with the seats pushed together. I'll keep it til 200,000 miles and look at a Pilot.

Favorite Features

The middle seats push together. The navigational system - can't live without it!

Suggested Improvements

Noise is noticeable.

We have driven this minivan crisscrossed throughout the southeast and loved every mile. The car has had no repairs. It runs like a sewing machine and has great room for all that my wife buys. We both drive it around town and wish it got better mileage, but at 19mpg city I'll take it.

Favorite Features

Drives like a car. Excellent cargo capacity. Comfortable and useful in almost all situations.

Suggested Improvements

Replace the timing belt with chain.

Review

It isn't quite a lemon, but the legendary Honda reliability has passed our van over - hence we call it a "grapefruit." We bought the van new in 2001 and it continues to be our primary family (of five) car. During warranty we had a leaking gasket and a defective fuel pump. After warranty we've had to replace the hinges for both sliding doors and the key cylinder ignition. So the car has left us stranded twice in 8 years. One of the plastic air conditioner knobs split (we glued it back together). The drivers side interior door handle's metallic covering started to peel off and was sharp enough to cut my wife's finger. It is now wrapped in duct tape.

Favorite Features

The interior is very intelligent. The ability to re-arrange seats, and completely flatten the rear-bench is great. The stereo and climate controls on the center stack are laid out really nicely.

Suggested Improvements

Reliability needs to improve. It may be that the type of driving soccer moms tend to put on vans requires an extra level of sturdiness beyond what Honda typically puts into passenger cars.

I bought this vehicle to replace a pickup truck and provide with added passenger capacity. It has exceeded all expectation. I chose the Honda for its record of reliability and its engine torque rating. Its towing capacity (3500 lbs) and interior space (capable of carrying a 4x8 sheet) easily cover my need for a pickup truck. I remove the seats, layout a custom fit carpet and carry tools and building materials inside. It makes a comfortable family van. I have pulled a camper over 10000 mi with no problems. On a trip to Mexico City (no towing) I averaged 27 MPG. On fishing trips to Canada I have carried 6 guys comfortably. Other than standard maintenance I have had no repair costs.

Favorite Features

Traction control, ABS, towing package, gas mileage (27/20), power.

Suggested Improvements

Between seat console compartment rather than tray. I added a 10ga fused wire for trailer connection. There are times I wish I had a 5000 lb towing capacity

Bought it new in Jan 2001, now Sept 2008 it has 102000 miles. No major problems, maintains quality impression of Honda. Around town it gets 16 MPG, on highway it's 23+. Just took a 700 mile round trip from NJ to VT. Going it got 24+ MPG, returning it got 23+ MPG. Easy to drive, and very comfortable ride. After 7 years of ownership it is still a great vehicle.

Favorite Features

Room, seating arrangement options.

Suggested Improvements

None.

At 60,000, the air conditioning went completely out. We're not talking a simple adjustment - the entire air conditioning had to be replaced to the tune of $2500.00. The bearings ground themselves to splinters of metal and shot through the lines, into the evaporator. No one at the dealership had ever seen anything like it. My warranty company sent 3 adjusters in just to see something they had never heard of before. At 68,000 miles, the entire transmission had to be replaced. Though Honda covered that, they didn't cover the engine mounts that had to be replaced as well. Thank goodness for the warranty company who picked up the $350.00 tab on that one. The only problem is that the "new" trans

We purchased our vehicle used with approximately 40k miles on the van. We have had to replace the transmission three times. I was always led to believe that Honda made quality vehicles I have been extremely disappointed. I have a 1995 Ford Explorer that has not given me a quarter of the problems the Honda Odyssey has and the Explorer has over 240k miles on it. The Odyssey is fun to drive however the I have been less than impressed with the required maintenance needed on the vehicle. I would strongly suggest someone buying this vehicle used request an extended warranty because you may need it.

Favorite Features

Fun to drive

Suggested Improvements

Correct transmission problems and focus on maintenance issues. In addition, there appears to be a problem with the electrical system because if the the radio or lights are left on for a short time and if the van is not running the van will not start. Poor fuel economy
