First of all, no one makes better transmissions than GM; I consider them the standard, so I agree with your Buick example. I've been watching the posts here, as a 2006 Ody owner. My point is that nearly all the problems with Ody transmissions are with those thru 2004, until they redesigned the Ody in 2005 model year. So telling everyone to avoid ALL Odys is not a responsible message to ... Read More
Maybe now they are designing for 200K, but that 2001 Odyssey was designed in 1999-2000 timeframe, 12 years ago. And most domestic 2001 vehicles would have been in the junk yard after two transmissions.
I have a 2002 Odyssey which I bought new in Canada. The 1999-2004 was called LaGreat in Japan with V6 engines. The 2005-2012 built in Alabama are Japanese Dylson (I think this is the name[ see web site below]). The Odyssey minivans without sliding doors have and are still built in Japan with both 4 and 6 cyl engines. They are not the same style as the USA Odyssey (which really ... Read More
Undersized brake rotors and undersized transmissions do count in quality control, design, and reliability. Engineers that work for Honda of America while designing the Accord and Odyssey were NOT intelligent enough to realize that larger vehicles will need larger components, and the problems exist quickly and spooked all the once, loyal Honda customers. The Honda Japanese engineers in Japan would caught this problem faster than what the Honda American engineers could ... Read More
It's not Honda's faulty quality control in North America. The problem is with the design of the "big" North American vehicles vs. the smaller 4-cyl versions in Asia/Europe. Honda never spent proper time studying the effects of undersized brake rotors and undersized transmission components. Best example is Honda "slapping" Accord brakes & transmission in a 4500lb. Odyssey in the 1999-2001 model years. Epic failure! As far as I can tell, the ... Read More
It's because the Honda Odyssey is produced and engineered in the United States. Most of the common problems could have been avoided if it was produced in Japan instead. Hi all; I am soon to be in the market for a used minivan. My last 2 vans were Toyota Previas. I had my heart set on an Odyssey until I started reading about all the known transmission problems. While driving my 1999 Honda Odyssey (with ~85K miles) the van temporarily lost power. AC, radio went out for a few seconds and then the dashboard lights came on (like when the van is started). As an owner of a 1999 Odyssey, and my experience as a tech tells me: 1.) Install a quality after market cooler, and service the transmission using Honda's new synthetic fluid. 2.)Drain and refill, Flushing is a waste of money and fluid in my opinion. 3.)Service it now, again in a month, and then annually. The oil jet service campaign refers to a fix to keep the second gear cooler. As ... Read More

I have a V6 Accord and I believe it is at 105,000 miles for changing a timing belt. I just bought a 2007 Odyssey EX-L-RES with 68,800 miles. I went to https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com and developed a service record profile. As you have noticed, Honda is not forthcoming with the schedule. I'm sorry my friend, Hayden's website shows they do not have a cooler for the 2007 Odyssey. They do have them for the 2007 Accord, Pilot, and Ridgeline. And they do have them for 1999-2004 Odyssey.
Check out the Hayden website and ask them which one you need: http://www.haydenauto.com/ROOT-Home/Content.aspx The compatibility issue concerns hose and fitting placement, and clearances at the radiator. I'm sure thye can tell you which one will fit your vehicle. I know the 678 fits my 1999 Odyssey.
This Hayden Cooler, according to the Amazon website, is only compatible with Honda Odyssey 1999-2004?
Use ONLY Honda fluid. I did the same thing with our 1999 Odyssey years ago and it was a mess. The Honda fluid has more friction modifiers in it, allowing for smoother shifts. Honda has recently switched over to a synthetic fuild, which should give a longer service life. Also, it sounds like your second and third shift soleniods are plugging up. It's a little work on the outside of the ... Read More

Toyota is known for engine sludge as well for most of the V6 from 1999-2002. I once was looking at $4-5K older mini van It cost a lot to fix honda's tranny issue but maybe less for Chrysler. As for Toyota engine, it usually cost around $2-3K to overhaul. Both Toyota and Honda also has power door problem as well

The residual was 56%. I expect that the van will be worth more than that at lease-end, so I may have some equity toward the next car at lease-end. Leasing can be better or worse than purchasing--there are lots of factors: the car, your financial situation, your expected usage of the car, how much the lease (or purchase) is subsidized by the manufacturer and how (lower money factor vs. elevated residual), ... I would still service it again. It's a relatively cheap attempt to save the converter. A new one is $700 (rebuilt units are around $200) plus 10 hours labor to install it. That's pretty expensive. In my opinion the service interval is too long for these units. I serviced ours several times a year and it lasted 190,000 miles before a clutch disk let go and trashed a couple bearings. By ... Jasper sells rebuilt transmissions for the Honda. A replacement for my 1999 Odyssey would cost $2,790, and includes a transmission fluid coller, which is really a must for these gearboxes. The 2nd generation Odyssey, (the first one with sliding doors) was released in 1999, then the 3rd generation (this current one) came out in 2005. No. Free extended warranty because of failures and lawsuit on 1999-2001 4 speed auto to 93 mo and 109K miles for U.S.A. market vehicles. Not Canadian market. Transmission changed to 5 speed in 2002. "safety recall in 2004. I think they put a band aid on a problem then and Honda knew what would eventually happen" Safety recall is installing ... Read More
Crash course on motor mounts: The motor mounts stabilize the vibrations given off by the engine. In particular there is one at the front (behind the radiator on 2002+ models, I think on the passenger side on 1999-2001 models...) that is actually active and controlled by the computer. It's a fluid filled hydraulic motor mount with a vacuum line going to it that will become stiffer or softer depending on what ... Read More
Hi, If it were me, I would buy the OEM if possible. I don't know if they ship to Canada or not, but I buy from Majestic Honda at HondaAutomotiveParts.com. They list the thermostat for the 1999 Odyssey at $24.75USD. You might try shopping other Honda dealers, because Honda list price is around $35. Good luck.
Hi, Just returned from a long trip. Thanks for the info. I'm browsing the web for a replacement thermostat but couldn't get a genuine one. Here in Toronto, Canada, the Honda dealer price is CAD$ 96.00 (including taxes0, equal to US$94. So expensive. From Hayne's Repair Manual, I found that the thermostat OEM spec: 163F to 194F(fully open). On the web: Nippon brand: 172F, Gates 170F and 180F. Should I buy the ... Read More
Hi, I have 2008 Honda odyssey touring. Anyone knows if it has a removable Navigation DVD?
If the government does care, they would not have allowed Honda to continue selling these cars until they have corrected their design flaw. Their transmission design failure traced back to 1999. Angela, if you want to have an effect I'd go after Consumer Reports magazine on this one. Probably most of you bought your Odysseys because that magazine rants and raves about Honda and you believed them. I always felt you ... Read More
Our daughter's 1999 GC SE is running well at 107,000 miles and my sister's 2001 Ody EX is also running well at 88,000 miles. Both have had a few minor repairs. Based on family experience, the Grand Caravan and the Odyssey are very reliable. I always do my own research so I asked my 3 friends who bought the Odyssey in 2000 when I bought my Chrysler how their vans were ... Read More
I really don't think it's reasonable for anyone to expect Honda to extend their warranty beyond 100,000, if that is what you purchased. If your tranny craps out at 90,000 miles and they replace it, then you have 10,000 miles left on your warranty, not another 100,000 miles on the rebuilt one. You cannot expect things to last forever. Our 1999 Odyssey has 140,000 and the original tranny. I service that ... Read More
It was a class-action lawsuit that forced Honda to repair some of these Odysseys. That may have been the case with some of the other recalls, but Honda did extend the warranty for their transmissions for the the 1999/2000 models way before 2006. the notice I got from them was sometime in 2001/2002. Much before the 2006 class action.
Soupapess: I am not sure what to tell you to do. Did you get a case assigned to you by Honda of NA? Did you get to speak to a case manager? How did you contact them? Was it only through your dealer? I do not know if they are covering the 2003 models as well as the 2002 models. Ours was a 2002. During my multiple conversations with the case ... Read More
I had the same transmission problem on my 1999 Odyssey. It only had about 57k miles when it happened. The extended warranty had expired,I contacted honda and got a free transmission but had to pay about $900 for instalation. I think that, due to the transmissions having been poorly engineered, leading to a DEFECTIVE unit,Honda should have assumed full responsibility and RECALLING all transmissions of the afected models. Instead they were able to get away ... Read More
I've owned a 1999 Odyssey and now a 2006 Odyssey Touring Model. Loved the 99 van but did have transmission issues (the last one a major issue but I believe the transmission warranty had been extended due to a recall). Traded it in for the 06 Touring Model. With the exception of the PAX run-flats, only minor issues to-date. I highly recommend you do your homework on the PAX run-flats if ... Read More
Not surprising to hear same problem on 2007 HONDA ODYSSEYS. That is a really outstanding record from 1999 to 2007...simply AWESOME DEFECTIVE HONDA ODYSSEY. Almost a decade of consistent transmission problems! Here are some suggestions to HONDA COMPANY 1. Send all HONDA Engineers and Designers back to school and never re-hire again 2. FIRE all QUALITY CONTROL Personel for hiding the defects. 3. FIRE all the SALES People for lying about ... Read More
Hi, I was told by my Honda Dealer that the only way they will warranty the transmission on my 1999 Odyssey is if the transmission light goes on and the computer gives the code for a bad transmission. This is frustrating because the transmission obviously has problems related to the year/model recall that you are all talking about, but the light is not on. The transmission consistently slips, shifts very hard, ... Read More
I believe the Ridgeline (and I assume the pilot?) have a different (ie stronger) tranny design, that was finally adopted for the Odyssey (2007?) So you are right that eventually the '05-'06 models will start failing. At least Honda has set a precedent, and would have trouble arguing that if the older models were bad, and they kept using the same design, that it is now the customers fault when it ... Read More
here is a link for the transmission settlement. http://www.hondatransmissionsettlement.com/php/pdf/caht1not.pdf. In my case, Honda is agreeing to pay for some of the transmission replacement. I'm still not sure I'm satisfied. Even if they agree to cover the whole cost, this has been a hassle and more importantly a dissapointment. My wife and I have owned 6 Hondas (this is the first mini-van) and we've never experienced a problem or breakdown. My experience ... Read More
First thing, check the fluid level when it is warm (i.e. returning from running around town). Make sure you have enough fluid in the transmission! Low fluid levels can be fatal to any moving parts. Check the drain plug to make sure it's tight! Did you hit anything with the van (a big rock, a curb, even a big stick in the road)? If so the case may be damaged, although ... Read More
