I have had this problem twice so far with my Element. It is a 2004 Element EX Manual Transmission, has 180k miles on it, and was purchased brand new by me. The first time was a few years ago, and I don't remember what was done to repair it. The second time was this weekend. I had a lot of work done the last few weeks (head gasket, valves, etc....) and ... Read More
I have exactly the same problem you describe in my 2004 Element. It randomly fails to start while in park. I have found a get-around that has worked every time. Leave the ignition turned on, press the brake, move the gear selector to neutral, then try starting. For us, it has never failed. But the solution to my problem can't be the solenoid ... or it would still fail to start ... Read More
I would like to tow my 13' Scamp camper that weighs 1200 pounds with a 2004 Honda Element that only has two wheel drive. Can this work? Does it matter if a car has 2wd or 4wd as long as it has enough power to tow a vehicle? Thank you.
Beware Prime Honda in Saco Maine. I tried to purchase a 2008 AWD EX leftover in December, and they used 2 distinctive tools to try and up the purchasing price; 1. After a few phone calls to inquire and begin the interest portion of the deal, they stated a price on the phone that seemed in the correct ballpark for this car. When arriving to have the face to face encounter, ... Read More
Let me start by saying I love my Element. I have since I got it brand new in 2004. Now, after much discussion and debate, the tech believes the hesitation that I have is caused by a plugged up catalytic converter. Cost to replace: $1675. I have done a bit of research and have found that the average cost to replace a cat in most cars is between $250 and $350. ... Read More
My 2004 Honda Element with 44K miles has been fine until last week when it unexpectedly stalled while turning left on a very hot Florida afternoon. The clock display also went off. I shifted into park and restarted it easily. There was no warning, no engine or other noises. About an hour later, it happened again after making another left turn. The next morning there were no problems turning left, and ... Read More
My son has a 2007 Element EX which has stalled twice on turns. It starts right back up, I understand. Car has about 15 thousand miles on it. We're taking it back to the dealer this weekend. good news, the dealer has found the problem- the solenoid was malfunctioning. they tell me that they have not seen this problem in any other element and they were suprised when they discovered this problem. the car is under warranty and i got it fixed free. i stopped by the show room and i'm considering trading in my 2004 EX AWD for a brand new 2007 Element. I have a 2004 EX, and drive 150 miles a day, 90% of which is freeway. Freeway speed is in the low 60's. I have a 2004 Honda Element and recently purchased one of those little "floaty" car compasses that has a suction cup to stick on your dashboard. But when I put it IN the car, it consistently tells me I'm going South - might be southeast, or southwest, but it's basically telling me South. ... Read More

I have a 2004 Honda Element EX AWD and love it. I'd like to purchase a small trailer for it to separately transport a small 11-foot sailboat, a John Deere lawn tractor, or lumber, drywall, etc. My questions about towing with it are three-fold: 1) Is the 1,500 pound maximum noted in the owner's manual absolute?; 2) What has your experience been in towing with the Element?; and 3) What challenges, ... zabeth, I installed the "gutter guard" solution on my 2004 EX. Lowes had black plastic gutter guard, so you can't really see it and it matches the factory black grill area. As I posted before I got (new) 2004 Element from Lorenz Honda in Greenfield, MA (close to VT and NH) about a month ago. I paid below invoice b/c it was 2004 and got a VERY generous trade allowance (I had shopped around). All-in-all I got a great deal and had a superior buying experience. We think that the doors are very awkward. We have teenagers and they like to sit in the back. So if you are in a spot where there are cars parallel parked on both sides of you it's tough. You have to open the front door to open the back. When the front is open, there's nowhere to stand to open the back. So we back out parallel parking to let ... Read More

The price Dealer asked was $20,000.00, which includes NYC sales taxes,$490 destination fee and plates\registration fees also. lgroses My brother just bought a 2004 LX Auto Fwd (Orlando, Fl) for $16,500 + Tax, Fees etc... $18,500 Out the door (no rebates or trade in). The doc fees here are $499+. I think $17,522.00 for a LX AWD sounds about right. You couldn't beat that price in this area (Orlando).
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I am pricing the 2004 Honda Element LX AWD with an automatic transmission. The lowest price quoted to me so far is $17,522.00, including destination fee. (Invoice is $18,322.00.) Dealer financing has been offered at 2.90%. Can I do any better than this? Should I wait, perhaps, another month or two? Please reply with any comments and/or suggestions. Thank you.
I called American Honda and they told me that the new 2005 Element will be introduced December 15. It looks like it will be just about the last Honda to get updated. Perhaps they have a lot of 2004s left to sell.
First, we love our element. The past weekend the engine light came on at 10K miles, and at the same time the shifter locked in place. The light coded a faulty ECM(main computer). It was replaced, and then another engine light code for Barametric pressure. That sensor was replaced. The auto shifter lock was due to a throttle body service bulletin. "Is an Element a crazy car for a family?" I have seen several young families in Elements. I'm a Honda fan. However, I went from a 2000 Isuzu Trooper to a 2004 Honda Element. Overall it is a great vehicle and fun to drive. I think you can get lower. I paid $18,000 for the 2004 Element EX, FWD, automatic transmission, no side airbags and no add-ons. With TT/L included I drove off the lot at just under $19,700. Shop it around a little, especially at the end of the month. I bought mine in Houston on the last day of June. Take Care & Have Fun!
Invoice plus $490 destination charge for that vehicle is $17,953. I would offer $17,553 ($400 below invoice)plus tax and registration. The 2005 Elements will be out in August, so this is a fair price. Plus, I believe there is a $400 manufacturer to dealer incentive.
Hi ALL- I am considering purchase of a 2004 Honda Element EX with 5 speed manual transmission and front wheel drive. Honda dealer in San Antonio, Texas quoted me a price of $18,300 (includes destination charge) and 3.9 percent loan from Honda financing. Is $18,300 price a good deal for this car? Any feedback is appreciated. :+) Thanks. --emarkv
Our Honda dealer says the 2004 Honda Element has side curtain airbags available as an option. I have not been able to confirm this anywhere. I do know that side airbags are available, but I have not seen anything about side curtains. Can anyone tell me for sure if they are available? Thanks.
I forget which magazine it was (C&D, MT, or R&T), but one of them did a long term test on the Element. During that test, they loaded the vehicle up. In the next issue, they had a letter asking about overloading the E. In their explanation, they used the same GVWR minus curb weight to figure max payload. Varmint 2004 Honda SUV Olympics
The Manual for our 2004 Element says the gross vehicle weight rating is 4,450 pounds. The FWD/MT weighs 3391 per Honda's web site. That would leave a payload of around 1050 pounds. The manual says to include the tongue weight along with occupants and cargo.

HondaCars.com has updated their web pages to include the 2004. I'm curious as to why the Facts Sheet doesn't include the new LX trim level. However, the Element Page has a Javascript pop up which explains the new LX trim level. (i.e. LX is DX plus air cond and stereo systems)
