2012 Honda CR-Z Base
(1.5L 4-cyl. Hybrid 6-speed Manual)
What our ratings include
Date Driven: 12/7/2010 (2011 model)
Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph took 8.8 seconds and the quarter-mile passed in 16.8 seconds @ 84.0 mph. This is not a fast car. But as a hybrid it retains some prestige in this category, soundly beating out the likes of Prius and Insight.
Surprisingly nimble. Its quick steering and soft suspension combine to accentuate body roll in transitions to the point of slight oversteer. Braking from 60 to 0 mph (122 ft) was a bit long considering the CR-Z is just 2,686 pounds as-tested.
Six-footers will find the CR-Z quite comfortable. No rear seat allows occupants to fully extend their limbs. And a telescopic steering wheel ensures the driver is especially accomodated. The ride is sporty-stiff but not excessively so.
Road noise is prevalent in the CR-Z, amplified through its Dunlop SP Sport 7000 A/S low rolling resistance tires. CVT drone is kept to a minimum except under high demand. Wind noise is reasonably muffled due to aerodynamic exterior.
Primary and secondary controls are oriented toward the driver and easily reached. The cockpit-influenced interior design enhances the sporty feel of this hybrid at the same time it promotes ergonomic fluidity.
Forward and side visibility is about average. But rearward visibility is limited. A vertical window parallel to the rear bumper helps the visibility limitations caused by the steeply raked glass of its rear hatch.
Seat Access & Space
It's a two-seater. With no need to worry about the comfort of rear passengers, there is plenty of space for occupants over 6 feet tall to stretch out and get comfortable.
Cargo & Storage
Instead of rear seats there are storage shelves, making the CR-Z cargo-friendly for a vehicle of its size. A rear hatch offers additional ease of storage. But this is still a compact car, so don't expect too much.
Not a misaligned panel to be found. The quality of materials used is appropriate for the price point and it all comes across as well assembled.
