Hybrid in disguise

I bought this car because I commute too many miles a week for a 4.0 v6 to cut it. I drove the car back from Chesapeake VA to the top corner of Pennsylvania and it drove wonderfully. The gas mileage is superb; I get mid-upper 40's in my area (This will vary greatly for anyone looking to buy one based on elevation changes on driving route, habits, ethanol in gas, etc.) during the dead of winter. The comfort is just about the same as my truck, however I'm more into functionality than luxury when it comes to vehicles, so if you need clouds to sit on, this isn't your car. The car has little passing power unless you shift down a few gears, but that's not what it's designed for.

Can't beat it

Bought the car used, only 16k...Had the gas tank filled up twice, and both times I averaged 49.6 mpg. It probably would have worse gas mileage if driven harder, but I cannot complain about what I get (is a 5 speed one). It would be nice if would have a little more oomph, but...then no mileage. Nice piece of machinery and technology, I enjoy getting almost 600 miles per tank, happy with the residual value down the road...

Awesome on the highway if you drive slow

I bought this car for my 65 mile round trip commute. It's awesome on the highway if I drive at a constant speed. Going 80, I'll get about 42 mpg. 65-70 mph and it will be around 45-48 mpg. Be a pain to everyone else (55-60mph) and get 49-52 mpg. Acceleration is horrible, and so is the throttle response when trying to stomp on the accelerator pedal. Overall, this car does what it is intended to, be a great commuter. In addition, it is easy to drive at the limits because the low rolling resistance tires are always screaming at you.

Fix the problems with the engine light

Since the car reached about 80,000 miles the service engine light comes on at least once a month... It has had a new computer chip, catalytic converter, and transmission clutch box. Now they tell me it needs another catalytic converter $1100. The mechanic told me that Honda has not been able to find a fix for this issue but now it is no longer in warranty. I have had all recommended maintenance which costs between $200-400 each time. I would think that the car would not be falling apart. I have a friend who had to replace the transmission just after 100000.

The IMA Battery

The IMA light came on, so I took it to the Dealer to check. The IMA system was not charging, so they had to order a new one for me. The cost of replacement was $5000, which I did not have to pay, as they are warrantied for 10 years. I wanted to know if this is a common problem with The Honda Hybrid, as mine is less than 4 years old.

I Like My Hybrid

I have the manual trans. If Honda offered the man trans in new hybrid, I'd buy one. When I drive at speed limit (55 mph), I ave 55-60 mpg. New hybrid can't approach this. Freeway traveling (60-65 mph) ave is 50 mpg. Headwind kills mpg. Snow tires kills mpg. To me, mpg is more important than getting there early. Two recalls for engine computer stuff. Never any problems. Haven't replaced brakes yet. I have them checked at every oil change (3k miles) & so far not worn out. I'm getting nervous. Compared to previous vehicle(Jeep Gr Cher, 20mpg) I paid for hybrid August 2003. Honda should offer man trans for Civic hybrid, same as regular Civic.

I like it

My mpg avg for 4000+ miles (B trip odo) is 52! Driving locally @ 60-65mph and normal in-town driving is 53-55 mpg! Only unusual maintenance was recall for fuel computer reboot. I Like my Civic Hybrid 5sp! Total mileage since new is 116xxx and brakes are still about 50+%. I wish Honda still offered the manual tranny, I'd buy a new one with navi option. The only downside is the lack of power, but I didn't buy it for power. You have to plan ahead to pass. Going up long grades can be slow.

Always Fun, Especially Passing Gas Pumps

I am getting better mileage than what it is rated at. I am at 49MPG combined 90% Highway 10% City. I drive 45 miles each way to work on all on highway in Denver. Today though the best 550 miles with 1/4 tank still left and 90 degrees all week long. I only spent $1500 in gas for 2006 and that is 35000 miles and 3 trips to Oklahoma, 1 Nebraska. In 2005 I had a 1997 Saturn and spent $2900 and no trips, just work and around town and only went 26000 miles and gas was much cheaper then. Everyone who tried to talk me out of the Hybrid now wants one. But if you buy a Hybrid a Civic or Prius is the only way to go.

A little disappointed

I love the car, the design, comfort and reliability, but am only getting between 38 - 43 MPG. Not bad, but was expecting a lot better. I have tried to drive conservatively, but still got less than 43 in city driving. Highway seems to do better, but most of my driving is in traffic. So a little disappointed in the fuel efficiency, but overall I am enjoying the car.

Hybrid for sale!!!!

$4300!!!! That's the price quoted by the dealership to replace the hybrid battery if it fails after the 80K warranty. 40.4!!!! That's my average MPG since I purchased my hybrid. Not quite 50/49 MPG. Consider the negatives before you buy a hybrid. Go for the standard engine!!!!
