If you've never heard of it feel free to google "1998-2001 Honda engine oil leak" you will find plenty of info on it, here is one of many links: http://consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/1998-to-2002-honda-accord-6.htm The 1st two mechanics(before I went to the dealership)that I had look at the car knew of this issue within 5 minutes. I was involved in a head-on collision in my 1998 Honda Civic DX. A driver in a 2011 Jeep ran a red light at hit me as I was making a left turn. Even though my 1998 Civic was totaled in the accident, I survived with no physical injuries. The passenger compartment was fine. My entire engine was crushed beyond repair. My Honda Civic (110 K) has a check engine light. The diagnostic code is 0505 (Idle air control valve). The car was idling low on rpm when slowed during a drive. Summary: Based on my experience and observations there should be no issues for at least 50k and with proper maintanence until 200k (or till car is 15). Then you will want to inventory the condition and possible corrosion issues. I am new to this forum so bare with me, this may be a long post. I have read through the majority of the Honda Civic GX (CNG) threads since I own a 1998 Honda Civic GX and am having some troubles with it. Yikes. As part of the 90,000 mile maintenance service on my 1998 Civic HX coupe, the dealer told they had to change the timing belt on the car. Only one problem: it ballooned the cost of the 90,000 mile service around US$900. Is it that costly to do timing belt changes on a Honda automobile engine?
I have been dealing with this problem for a few weeks now. I can usually get the car going right away but it's pretty dangerous as it only happens while I'm moving so dropping it into neutral and restart is the only way to really do it for my commute. Two times I've had to pull over and wait. I just put in a STP fuel injector cleaner so I'm going ... Read More
You are absolutely correct in the Imp gal of 48 mpg on the highway. (367.2303 miles/7.6989 imp gal= 47.70 mpg) Canada would prefer this conversion I think. However for the US gal (128 oz per gal) the mileage is 367.2303 miles/9.246 gals= 39.72 mpg US. All the best and keep at it !!
yeah hope to keep it to 400 000 miles ! i have another calcul for the transfers from metric to imperial. exemple : 591km for 35 liter first convert de km to miles so : 591 / 1.6 = 369.375 second, transfert liter into gallon so : 35/ 4.54 = 7.709 after that 369.375 miles / 7.709 = 47.9 mpg sorry if my english is not to well i speak french ... And if the owner balk's at the idea that some mechanic was going to look at it.....run, don't walk from the deal. Also, even after a mechanic looks at it, there is no guarantee that the vehicle won't have some problems (undoubtedly there will be). A mechanic can observe some of the obvious issues. There may be hidden issues that only show up under certain operating conditions (like won't start if ... Read More
kiawah, much appreciate your valuable advice. I will hae an independent mechanic check the car. Thank you very much.
The better deal is unabled to be determined, based upon the limited information you provided. You would need a qualified mechanic to check them over. One of the vehicles that appears initially to be a better deal, could ... Read More

I solved it! I looked at the other door and bent a coat hanger to match the door profile. Just an update. I managed to release the child lock using a plastic knife ;) . Infact it did not take much time. Thanks once again.
Thanks for the response kiawah. You got everything right except for the part where I need to get a new car. LOL. :D Wish I could get one easily. Anyway, is there any way you can release the child lock from under the hood (next to the engine)? I don't think we can achiever this, but I heard we can do that. Anyone heard about that? Thanks once again.
Let me get this straight...... The child lock is on, so you are not able to open the door from the inside......and the linkage is broken or disconnected, so you are not able to open the door from the outside either? So you can't get the door opened, so you can then take the inside door panel off to get at the locking mechanism? Sounds like no option but to get ... Read More

I still don't get why the exterior look of some of the USDM Hondas differ from their JDM counterparts. Some differences are clearly just badges (like the Acura RSX being still being the original Honda Integra), some are features due to difference in market needs, but why make the exterior different (interior is the same, except for being a RHD version). Hare some photos of the JDM version of the 2006 ... Read More
I've gone on record that I'd buy a new Civic sedan today if I wouldn't lose so much on my '04 EX auto sedan, but still dream of an Si. Did you inknow there's an excellent First Drive report right here on Edmunds? Also great interior and exterior photos, h.p./torque curves! The text of the report follows: They Should Call It the Type-R By Scott Oldham Date posted: 08-31-2005 Before 1998, ... Read More
I've been told a lot of things by the dealers which weren't really true. I thought we had decided that the top gear was taller on the auto and that's why the mileage was better. This makes the most sense because I've seen taller gearing in economy cars to get great fuel economy. Maybe he meant the new computer for the auto improved shifting and allowed a higher gear because shifting ... Read More
Power to weight isn't always a directly proportional comparison. I remember about six years ago, I was going through my old Consumer Reports magazines and noticing as the Honda Accord automatic went from a 125horsepower engine to a 150 horsepower engine, and the power-to-weight ratio improved, the acceleration times got worse. The 1992 did it in 9.8 seconds and the 1998 one did it in 10.5. It's a little know fact, ... Read More
I have a 1998 Civic EX with 70,000 miles. I just took it to the dealer and they told me 3 things were recommended to be fixed: 1) Right rear trailing arm bushing is torn, and left is cracked, they recommended repairing both and performing a wheel alignment. Estimate: $595. 2) Battery failed load test, they recommended replacing the battery. Estimate: $109.95. 3) Oil pan gasket is leaking, they recommended replacement. ... Read More
My 1998 has problems starting. It turns over but is not catching.I took it recently to a mechanic who had problems trying to figure it out. He said the gas filter was closed. Well the problem started again(on a road trip!!) What happens is if I wait like an hour or so it will start up again. The thing is this is our third honda civic in my family that this ... Read More
I read many discussion boards online prior to buying my hybrid. I spent the first 2 months re-learning how to drive and be mindful of things that can reduce mileage: air conditioning use, heavy load, tire pressure, stop and go, alot of acceleration and excessively high speeds. I have made concerted efforts to use the econ button when using air conditioning, not using A/C when open window is sufficient, keeping my ... Read More
Hello, I have been keeping very close track of my mileage since the purchase of my 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid. I have had the car since mid April 2005. I have already had my first oil change. The mileage (regardless of freeway or street/stop-and-go) remains between 30 mpg and 33 mpg. The REGULAR civic claims it has mileage of 38 mpg! I have done some extensive research on mileage and how ... Read More
