Time to replace my 1997 Accord LX. Considering the Civic for fuel eco but hate to loose the handling of the double-wishbone in my Accord. Understand Honda changed to McPherson strut on the Civic many years ago to save cost. Did the handling suffer by the switch? Also, is there any alignment problem with the Civic McPherson. I had dread experience with 80's Toyota McPherson for tire wore out unevenly. I ... Read More
This is my husband's daily driver. It doesn't overheat, but he noticed antifreeze on the ground, opened the hood and antifreeze had sprayed all over the engine compartment. He added about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of coolant to bring the level up. He tried to duplicate the problem in the driveway without driving the car just by keeping the RPMs up, but nothing happened. Yesterday he replaced the radiator cap and ... Read More
I got an OEM thermostat installed last month and i personally saw the guy take it out of the packaging and install it, while i was still watching him. What kind of fan. Is it electric fans or centrifical fan. If centrifical just because it is turning doesn't mean it is working as it should. Could also be a faulty gauge or sending unit for the temp gauge. Not to say you didn't get a defective thermostat and did they give you the proper temp thermostat?
dmathewe3, thanks for your post. I got my radiator flushed in July 2010, thinking it may have had a clog in it somewhere, but that doesnt seem to be the case. The fins are all clear too. Still heating up and I`m running out of options....
How about a good cleaning of the radiator itself. You got a 160K worth of dirt, bugs and whatever else stuck in the fins of the rad. blocking the flow of the cooling air needed to keep the engine cool. If everything else is OK as you say that would be my guess. In the old days you could take it to a rad. shop and they would boil it to ... Read More

Wheel locks on an LX??? We put them on cars with alloy wheels but not on steel wheels. Why?? You may find that your maintenance minder actually suggests less service than you did on your 1997. 200 HP Civic Si (SiR in Canada) would make more sense than Type-R simply because Honda sells those in extremely limited numbers. There are a few things Honda could do to its compact hatch lineup (Civic Si and RSX). Civic Si: 200 HP, 6-speed transmission, 16-inch wheels with performance rubber and brakes, keep EPS, ABS and EBD. Subtract moon-roof and save 20-25 lb. plus some head room. RSX: 175 HP (to ... Read More
I own a 1997 honda Civic EX coupe automatic. I have been a Honda owner for many years now and I guess you could consider me a dedicated customer. I have owned a 1985 JDM Honda Prelude while living in Japan and sold it to purchase a 1987 JDM Honda Integra which I sold to purchase a 1990 JDM Honda Prelude. I purchased my Civic after returning to America. I was ... Read More
I am quite sorry about that post my Husnband made to you. I feel that was completely un called for. But I hope you take the appology. Thanks~ Oh by the way... I will re ask what his ignorant remarks where. How reliable is a 1997 or newer Toyota Camry, or Honda Civic... with high milage? What kind of near future problems would we usually encounter, and last, what sort of ... Read More
I have been experiencing water problems in the 1997 Honda Civic I have on the right side floor of the front and back passenger side. Any time it rains, which is quite often here in Seattle, the whole floor on the right side is totally wet. I have taken it to the dealer who finds nothing broken or wrong, including any holes in the under carriage. Does anyone have any suggestions ... Read More
eludwig: I guess I've kind of had the opposite experience. I owned an '89 Accord 4DR for about 5 or 6 years, and finally sold it in 1997 when it had about 190,000 miles on it. It was still running beautifully, of course. :) I then owned a 93 Buick LeSabre, which had a host of small niggling problems, even though when I got it it only had about 36,000 miles ... Read More
I have owned a 2001 Civic DX for 3 months now. I am relatively pleased with the performance of the car. I purchased this car because of Honda's history of making quality vehicles. My goal is to be happy with it for at least 10 years. I have been somewhat disappointed. The car provides a solid mechanical feel, but in other aspects feels cheap. The doors do not feel like they ... Read More
I have an automatic 1997 honda civic ex coupe. When driving at high speed on the freeway, and then coming to a slow in the exit. The car rpm gauge in my civic drop down close to 1000 rpm while the car slowing down to about 50mph and then the rpm surge up again. Does anyone have this kind of problem or know what wrong?
Goodness. I am now on my third alternator. I had the brushes replaced in the original in Dec. 1997, then in August 1998 I had to purchase a remanufactured alternator, as the repaired one went out. Finally, last week capped my big year in Honda reapairs. A surprise stranding with yet another needed replacement of an alternator. I have only driven 30k miles since I bought the Civic in 1997. Is ... Read More
I have a 1997 Honda Civic EX. It is coming up on 60K. The manual suggests to change the timing belt at this point. This is somewhat of a pricey upkeep. I was wondering if anyone with a civic has any advice on this topic.
1997 Honda Civic Coupe "Check-Engine Light" problem. The car was flawless over 43K miles, then one morning two weeks ago on start-up the "check-engine" light came on. I called the dealer and he said don't worry and that approximately three "cold starts" will cure the problem, and that it was emissions related. More than 10 cold starts later and a couple of tanks of gas--THE LIGHT STAYS ON. Does anyone have ... Read More
I hate my 1997 Jetta GT...not only do I believe it is cursed (2 accidents within 6 months neither my fault), i just do not like the car. I have no options in the car, it is a very base car. I was looking to trade it in for a 01 Civic EX manual trans. I was wondering if anyone with that car can give me some advice. Is the stereo ... Read More
I have been looking for a small car for a while and would like to get a used Honda Civic DX. A dealer nearby has a 1997 with 48K miles for $9,500. I baulked because it was at the top end of what I wanted to spend. Today the dealer called back and said he had a 2000 Hyundai Elantra with 6,300 miles for $8,300. I don't have experience with the ... Read More
I bought a 2001 Honda Civic EX in October because my husband had a 1997 (traded it in for a 2001 Accord EX) and it was a nice car. I am having the same problems as billyspeed and cwopete. When I picked up the car I popped the hood and couldn't close it (they fixed it), there is a rattling coming from the dash that is driving me crazy so I ... Read More
a friend of mine has a 1997 civic with 35,000 miles on it and the exhaust manifold is cracked pretty severely. the mechanics at the honda dealer are telling him the part (not including labor) is going to cost $800; does that sound right???
Had the oil (& filter) changed at 3000 then 6400 miles in my Civic hatch but have read in newsgroups (alt.autos.honda & rec.autos.makers.honda)that they (Honda's in general) don't need the oil changed every 3000 miles, lots of RTFM (read the fine manual) and follow their suggestion messages.
