Maybe that explains why so many car companies use numbers for car names... hard to find good names these days. Like... what's an "elantra"? Or "sentra"?? At least "corolla" means something, but I wonder how many people could say what it means w/o looking it up? Civic... now that's a good name I think. A number of Honda-oriented web sites have said that there will be some changes to the mid-model change (MMC) Civic. The most obvious change will probably be switching to the larger headlights used on the JDM/Asian market Civic models, and another change could be a revised center front dash (just like what Honda did with the 1996-2000 model Civic). Unfortunately, the 2009 is a little bit softer looking (I'd only want the SE with the 5-spoke alloys). There are lots of more rounded cars as you say, and maybe I wasn't fair about that; but the round charater lines, with the round-ish headlights, rounded taillights, and I think the biggest offender, ... The 1996-2000 Honda Civic had a GX. I have seen them offered for public sale at some dealerships. Now if Honda started offering Diesels in the US, they would have me as a customer. And I don't want an Izuzu diesel, like they have in Europe. It would be nice to have a Honda developed diesel, then I can run it on used frying oil. http://www.greasecar.com/ The only side effect is ... Read More

Historically, Honda engines lived past 300,000 miles on just dyno oil. So, if cost is of concern then go with a cheaper option. If you are going to change your oil every 3750 miles, then go with regular quality dyno oil. I do Mobil 1 changes every 5000-6000 miles. Also, if cost is a concern, the DIY cost is only $30-$35, buy oil at walmart $28/case of 6 (you'll only need ... Read More

Air bags for 1996 go for about $100 for both drivers and passenger at a junk yard. A radiator, brand new form Honda is $200-$250, an sftermarket or refurb would be even chaper. Neither is difficult to install for a DIYer. Once fixed the car will most likely pass the inspection and may fetch more money than a $1000.

LX models have always had drum brakes and EX models have had drum brakes in non ABS models since 1991. The diameter of the wheels have very little to do with refinement. I think you're referring to CR's rating of the 2001 Civic, which was the first year of a new generation. The prior gen Civic (1996-2000) had the usual (for a Honda) above-average marks. It doesn't take much in CR's survey to make a new car score average or even below-average marks. That's because the average new car has few problems in its first year.
