I remember over the years hearing about how the Civic was the end-all, be-all of cars in this class because of what publications like Consumer Reports said about it. Now that the 2012 Civic has been panned by Consumer Reports, we hear that it doesn't matter what they think about the Civic. I really love it when someone says something stupid like "My 1994 Accord still runs great so that's all ... Read More
Except that the CVT is expensive to fix and shouldn't need an extended warranty to make the car sell. A student's first car should be economical, cheap, impossible to kill, and fun. While I was talking about new cars, this brings me to my #1 personal choice, which is to get a classic car. It's cool, it's unique, it doesn't depreciate... The list goes on. Now that means you still have ... Read More
Mechanical parts are still plentiful because the engine/transmission and most major components were shared with other Civic models. The '93 del Sol came in two trim levels- S, which shared mechanicals with the Civic DX/LX and the Si, which had the engine/transmission from the Civic EX/Si. I checked several sites and new body parts are also still readily available. For an 18-yr old vehicle, using a site such as car-part.com to ... Read More

> But remove the elec motor & I'm sorry but its dangerous. And the general public would agree, it's simply unsafe. Nope. Power to weight is measured as lbs/hp (when you compare gas to gas engines). The 2006 HCH is 93 HP and 2877 lbs. That's 31lbs/hp. That is wimpy, but here are some other production cars that are not considered unsafe: 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid with depleted battery (gas only): ... Read More
It wasn't OPEC. Congress killed the CRX, and every other lightweight, fuel efficient car, by legislating airbags, ABS, side impact beams, and every other safety device they could think of. This coincided with an explosion in consumer buying power during the 1990s, which created a demand for more luxury features (meaning more weight), even on traditional economy cars. Honda Civics and Ford Escorts suddenly offered power windows, power seats, cruise control, ... Read More

Based upon Used Oil Analysis (UOA) reports that are published on the http://www.bobistheoilguy.com web site, Havoline pretty much stands alone as the best non-Synthetic oil currently on the market. The biggest difference is the attention to detail. I just moved to Canada and while in the UK I had the civic type-s, wonderful car. I agree with kiawah, especially if you are able to get the car restarted it sounds like the alternator is still kicking out and keeping your battery charged, otherwise you would not be restarting the car. Another thing to check other than what was mentioned would be to check your main ground running from your battery to the frame. If that loosens it can cause this problem.
Suspect basic electrical problem (corrosion or bad main fuse link/cable, ignition key switch going bad, battery, etc)
We've got a 1990 Honda civic that's run like a charm until, suddenly the radio/cassette deck stopped working, just dead, then a couple of days later the car started stalling in the middle of drives. We've had it towed three times into varying repair shops: two had no idea what was wrong, one claimed a loose screw ... but many $$ later, no radio, still stalling. Surely there must be some ... Like many on this forum, I believe Honda quality is slipping compared to what it used to be. Yeah I had the serpentine belt replaced on my 99 saturn and the belt was like 70 and the replacement was courtesy of a freind.... There are other "special cases" in the Honda line. Civio Hatchbacks, CRX's and Civic 4wheel drive wagons will break the bank. The 1990-1993 Accords have a VERY strong support group. These people scour the newspapers and the internet for what they think were the "best" Accord ever built. I disagree, but as I said before, we are all different. And road salt? What's that?
From our extensive experience with Hondas (17 since 1990), I'd say you are right; we routinely get above sticker estimates. Last trip I took to the gulf coast, I got 39 MPG in my Accord. That's 5 MPG higher than the sticker estimates I will see. I have never had a tank as low as the City estimate states (24), the lowest tank I have run was 27 MPG (summer, A/C, ... Read More

Nube, How are you getting 28-30mpg on a 1990 Maxima (6cyl)? I think that engine is rated 19(city)-26(highway). I drove the same cars you mentioned in your comparison and while some of the Honda dealers in my area are snobbish, others are not (I purchased a Honda Odyssey in April 06). Well, let me clarify what I said so unclearly (sorry). I meant that Honda usually doesn't jump on a bandwagon, but build their own bandwagon instead (like they did with VTEC in the 1990s). It is a very well equipped 19,610, but I agree about that being high for a Civic. I remember the days of a Civic DX for $10,000. And that wasn't in the Reagan era! It was around 1990, I believe. I think the stigma of Civic still comes off as the 'bottom rung' kind of car. I disagree wtih that completely, but 20k for "the cheap Honda" is high.
