Test Driver Ratings & Comments
Acceleration commentsWith this four-cylinder automatic Accord, there's virtually nothing I could do to make an impact on acceleration. All runs essentially the same with traction on/off, with brake torque or manual shifting up the PRNDL. Could detect the VTEC changeover at about 5,000 rpm.
Braking commentsWhoa! Remarkable lack of bite from the tires. Brakes are obviously in full-ABS cycle, but the Accord doesn't feel like it's slowing in a corresponding fashion. What's worse, the front pads were smoking HEAVILY after four stops and required 10 feet more to stop.
Handling commentsSkid pad: Yikes, these tires scream in protest well before the car is anywhere near grip limit. Steering feels appropriately weighted and is reasonably informative. With stability control on, the throttle is pulled back to an almost ridiculously low speed. Slalom: This car's rear gets very loose with the stability control off -- entertaining at the closed-course track, but not recommended for the real world. Steering is light and precise, suspension wind-up improves transitions, but ultimately tire grip (or lack thereof) is the limiting factor. With stability on, the car makes appropriate corrections, then lets go again. Well-tuned stability control.
