A Car Enthusiast's Hybrid

ReviewThe days of choosing between a fuel-efficient "pregnant rollerskate" and a car that passes everything but a gas station are over. The Accord Hybrid nicely packages performance with fuel economy. The exceptional marriage of the vaunted 3.0L V- TEC V6 engine with an electric motor is definitely the vehicle's mechanical strength. This is Honda's third-generation IMA project, and it shows far greater refinement than its predecessors. My primary concern rests with Accord's standard automatic transmission. It surely contributes to the vehicle's "smoothness," but my tranny can be finicky. It waits too long to shift at times and can create a pause-and-burst sensation between first and second gears.
Best FeaturesIf you love to drive and feel no need to advertise your enivornmental sensibilities , then the Accord is for you. The Accord chews up mountain passes and merges effortlessly, while averaging 33 mpg.
Worst FeaturesMy IMA does not work when running the window defogger and it can take a while to kick in off a cold start. Also, for $30,000, one would think this car would come without Honda's usual symphony of obnoxious interior vibrations and rattles at freeway speeds. The stereo is subpar for a near- luxury car.
