Hi, 1990 Geo Prizm; Vin code6. LSI; 3spd. Auto. I'm aware that the correct fluid for the differential part of the transaxle is ATF. according to the manufacture. Have you ever heard of people putting in gear oil instead [80W-90]. I've had several mechanics tell me that this an an accepted fluid. I had to have a transaxle installed in my Prizm recently and the installer used gear oil [80W-90] instead ... Read More
The 97 Prism is a Toyota Corrolla, the Tercel is a step down like the Chev Metro. I doubt the tranny is anything alike.
Your future looks grim for the tranny. The radiator thing is disturbing as well.
I think it a common problem with these cars. Judging by the amount of exhaust manifolds on Ebay and reading some of the Prizm forums. I think a header for a 1990 Toyota Corolla will work, but I would like to know before I spend $160.00 on one.
I have a 1990 Prizm. I was wondering where I could find a good engine and what I could be looking to spend for it. I also was wondering if it would be possible to put a larger Geo engine in it. If anyone could help it would be great. I would love to keep this car on the road and need to do something fast or I will have to ... Read More
My 97 prizm doesnt make the same noise but does the "accelerated, the engine revved, but no geared response". Does any one know if a 94 tercel tranny will work in the prizm. Thanks, Theron
My 1990 Geo Prizm with 158,000 miles suddenly started making an clunk-clunk-clunking noise only when it is in gear, running down the road. It did this after a momentary loss of power during which time it felt like it was in neutral. At first, when I accelerated, the engine revved, but no geared response, then it came back, but with the clunking noise. This noise does not occur during idle, only ... Read More

I have not got really in to the cable thing but I will take your advice and change them out, I did it a little visual check but not a great check. Thank you !
Did you check/replace the battery cables?
If you are seeing brown foam in your radiator, it more than likely is a head gasket, & in that case a lot of times you won't be able to see exactly where it's leaking from. Change the head gasket. That should take care of your acceleration problem as well. Geo's have a tendency to "hide" that problem in the oil. You won't see any water/brown foam in the oil, but ... Read More
I also have a '90 Geo Prizm, my starter seemed to stick once in a while but would always start, my wife started driving it so I had the starter replaced, now it clicks after it's warm and won't start for a while. If you drive somewhere, run in the store, caome out 15 minutes to about 1/2 hour later it won't start. I have replaced the battery, alternator and starter ... Read More
Hi, Has anyone removed a water pump from a 1990 Geo Prizm? The manuals call for the separation of the engine front and rear mounts so there is clearance to acces the water pump pulley bolts. For the front mount the through bolt is removed according to the manual. [That's clear]. The rear mount: " Remove the 2 nuts for the rear mount" [That's not clear;I really don't see the 2 ... My 1990 Geo Prizm makes an absurd noise every time I hit 35 mph. Now I can't even go beyond 45 mph. The car seems to have power whenever I hit the gas. I've changed oil and filter but that didn't help. This car was fine until I drove it to NYC for the holidays. I cannot stand the weird noise and I'm thinking of donating this car but I need ... Coolant temp sensor sends signals to the fuel injector, I believe. And maybe to the temp gauge on the dash also. Actual cooling is regulated by a mechanical device called thermostat. I never replaced one on Prizm so I am not sure exactly where it is, but if you carefully trace the path of the radiator hoses, you will find it. I hope the "clicking sound" does not imply internal damages ... Read More
1st, last year the ignition barrel was changed out, seem to be fine until about 3mths ago, now almost every time you turn the ign key, either you hear the soleniod click, no start or nothing..hold the key..then it starts, of course other routines are opening the drivers door..thats helped 2-3 times...jiggle the key...if it's the starter how do you get in there to replace it??? can the solenoid be replaced ... I have a 1990 Geo Prizm and to this date I believed that I had a 3 speed auto transmission. A couple of pages back I read that the difference between the 3 and 4 speed is that the 4 speed has an additional button at the shift selector to engage/activate the 4th speed. Mine does have this button at the bottom of the selector. It is marked "overdrive shift lock", ... Read More
I own a 1990 Geo Prizm GSi (4 door). It has about 135000 miles on the odo but is still as tight as new. No sqeaks, rattles, clicking sounds ... whatsoever. And in general, it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. I owned a Volvo 245 station wagon before and had a few repairs performed on it now and then. However, the Prizm has NEVER been in ... Read More
I have a 1990 Geo Prizm (manual) with almost 210,000 miles, which I love. I have never owned a car as reliable and problem-free as this one, with the lagniappe of being fun to drive. It has no problems and still gets 30+ MPG, but I am beginning to be concerned about its age and mileage. So I am considering getting a 1999 or 2000 model. However, did the change to ... Read More
Hello, I'll looking for information on the 1997 Geo Prizm. I currently own a 1990 Geo Prizm and I love. But it's getting old and kind of junky looking. So, I'm looking at buying a 1997 Geo Prizm and was wondering if the 1997 has any of the quirks my 1990 has. Such as: Problems with the window assembly being very weak. I roll the window down a little and it ... Read More
