I just purchased a 1997 Geo Metro and when I ran it through emissions it failed because the Check Engine Soon light is on but there were no codes listed to diagnose the problem. I've disconnected the battery cables to see if it would reset but that didn't work. The gas cap is on correctly and tightly. Any suggestions?
I will have to say many many thanks as well, my 1997 geo metro is doing the same thing... but. my tail pipe is completely gone...just bought the car, sight unseen, was told it had a crack in exhaust..thankfully i have a great mechanic whom is working on it for me, several minor things wrong...thanks for the GREAT info.....

Well, I looked up this claim, and found to my surprise that it is right! Apparently, the 1989-96 Geo Metros were made with fuel filters; but the 1997-2001 Chevy Metros did not have fuel filters. Instead of an external fuel filter, they had a fuel pump with a filter screen in the fuel tank. Here's a link to a photo of the 2000 Metro 4 cylinder in tank fuel pump and ... Read More

I have a 1997 Geo Metro lsi with the 1.3L 4 cylinder engine. It starts and runs great. Has about 230,000 miles on it but after warming up and driving maybe about 30 miles it acts like it runs out of gas. I pump the gas a few times and it runs ok for a while longer or does it again after a few miles. The local repair shop can find ... Read More
If it's like my '91; I had the same problem.. What I found was that there are two "guides" underneath the light assemblies that you cannot see. They rust and are hard to pry out so.. what I did was to reach up and feel for the screw heads and remove them from the bottom.. They are directly under the front corners and are phillips head screws. Good luck..
I am trying to replace my 1997 geo metro headlight but I just cant get the old one out. I remove the two screws I see that are holding it but it is still stuck in the corner somewhere. Anyone knows how to remove it?
If you had read the description of the ignition control module in the Rock Auto listing for the 1993 Geo Metro LSI; you would have seen that the part in the picture was only used on Canadian models (and even then; not on all Canadian models). That's why you can't find it on your car. Sometimes it pays to read as much as is avaliable about a given item; particularly when ... Read More
Both the crankshaft timing belt sprocket and the camshaft timing belt sprocket (which are located underneath the timing cover) on the 1990 Metro 1.0 3 cyl engine are attached with just one bolt. But the crankshaft pulley for the fan, water pump, and alternator belt is attached with 4 bolts. So it sounds like you are referring to that pulley; rather than the timing sprocket. The number of bolts used on ... Read More
Is it beltwaymechanic or butch 22?Well,I don't care, this message and the above one applies to all! Also....to my above message. If you could somehow find a wider lug with a "precise"inner thread match to fit the smaller 12" studs...well then that still won't work that great because you still have the stud diameter problem "below" the lug and into the 13"rim hole itself!I doubt that you could find a unique lug anyway ... The fuel pressure regulator runs off of vacuum when you hit the gas with your foot the throttle body ... Read More
I dont know if you will see this, but did you ever solve the problem with your Geo? I am having the same problem.
I am selling my 97' metro just had it tuned up new wires new plugs new ignition coil new muffler. new battery. 1.3l 4 cyl. 4 door sedan tires are decent.
We have a 1997 Geo Metro with the 1 liter 3 cyl. I found a 1992 motor, 1l 3cyl in good shape. Both are standard trannies. Will these year models compatibly swap out. Or swap out easily. Any mods that may have to be done. All help appreciated. Thanks!
fuel injection.
I'm reading the no-start is a fuel pump relay going bad. when you turn the ignition key to run position you should be hearing a humming sound, the fuel pump turning. try vibrating the relay with another person in the car with key in on position. the censis is the relay solder joints are breaking away from the metal posts.
maybe harmonic balancer? my crank shaft pulley came apart and was loose and when i found it, i turned the crank shaft without realizing it and mine cranked but didnt start until a few attempts later. maybe something loose.
My 1997 Geo Metro LSI with 65000miles that dies on the freeway when you slow down/press on the brake going from 60MPH. An example would be slowing down from cruising speed to slow down for an off ramp or a slow driver. I have already checked the electrical system MANY times myself and at the dealer. Everything passes with flying colors. When it dies and you pull over the car usually ... Read More
I owned a 1997 GEO Metro and the same thing happened. I replaced just about everything as well including the generator. turns out it was the battery cables were worn and had a loose connection. Once I replaced the battery cables the problem went away. don't know if that helps but that was it was on my car.
Do you have access to a GPS? Even a simple hand held GPS displays your speed quite accurately. My 95 Geo 3 cylinder 5 speed speedometer is real close even at 65 to 85 MPH. I may be too late to answer your question but it seemed like you had a short to ground that was draining your battery.
Thank you so much for your helpful information. I had them change the battery cables (which looked kind of worn) like you said and since they replaced them with new cables, I have not had a problem. Pretty expensive way to find out you need new battery cables! Thanks again! :D
Sounds like a starter problem. Make sure all battery cables are tight and clean. The ground can be your worst enemy. Try grunding the engine with a jumper cable, from negative post of battery to engine. Pull the start wire off the starter solenid and run a hot wire to the battery. Touch it to the battery and see if it turns. If it dont, good be your starter or your stater ... Read More

I own a 1995,1996, 1997 (2) Geo Metro's...all have composite headlights. That is the clear plastic lenses, not sealed beams. I went to look at 2 Geo Metro's this week, a 1995 and a 1996, both had sealed beam headlight systems.. was the composite headlights a accessory add on? When were they made as a standard feature ?
replace it today, not tomorrow. Price is well spent. I own a 1995, 1996, 1997 Geo Metro's and a 1997 Suzuki Swift (a metro) so, I know my Metro's.
not being a mechanic in CA., I am not sure about the emmissions testing. OH, but you are so wrong! There is a special Califoria emmission manifold. How well I know. I have a 1997 Geo Metro with that exact manifold. In my opinion, with the current fuel crisis; I feel the only Metros or Fireflies worth talking about are the 3 cylinder models coupled with a five speed. Why did they ever bother building a four cylinder automatic for this car? It only boosted the horsepower slightly ... Read More

I found out the hard way in my 1997 Geo Metro that a radio circuit card meltdown can take out the ignition coil fuse. If so, pull the "dome" circuit fuse and plug it into the ignition coil slot. If the ... Read More
I happened to purchase a 1997 Geo Metro 1.0L/5spd that had been abused, probably by the former owner's teenager. If you have a Discount Tire Company in your area, they are about $45.00 per tire (see if they are running them on sale). Tom
