i have a 1991 geo metro, we have put a 1996 motor in the car, but we ended up putting the distributor from the 1991, but there is no vacuum hoses and there is no place on the intake for vacuum, what do we do? help!!
we replaced the bottom half of the engine, had a hard time timing it and now it seems like it is running to rich, flooding itself, it is a geo metro lsi 1991, help!
Does anybody have a full diagram of the vacume and emmision hoses to a 1991 geo metro or maybe pictures of them within the engine compartment. I can't find any, even in repair manuals.
Fuel isnt getting to the engine. If I pour fuel into the engine it will run, but it isnt getting fuel from the pump to the engine. I have change the fuel filter. When I turn on the key I do not hear the fuel pump kick on. However, I dont know if the Fuel relay fuse is bad or the pump itself. Is there a way of testing the relay ... Read More
My 1991 geo needed a tune-up so I go get cap, rotor, wires, air filter, etc.... Everything fit except the distributor cap, diameter is to small. Everywhere I go even the dealer ship the cap is to small. The cap you can order for a 1.0 is the same for a 1.3 liter motor. They are all to small. The diameter I need is 1 3/4 inches across and has 2 ... Read More
Since you say that the car won't turn over, it very well could be your starter. The gear teeth do mesh with the fly wheel teeth. It sounds like the shop that did your clutch owes you some work. Now my question to you, I also have a 1991 geo metro lsi hatchback. I cannot find a distributor cap that will fit, where ever I go the cap diameter is to ... Read More
Here's a story you don't hear every day. I bought a 1991 Geo Metro hatchback 5-speed in 2004 for $500, when it had about 130k. Over the next year, I replaced the alternator, clutch, and catalytic converter with new equipment. It ran great, and it was all I needed for scooting around town. Then I had a fender-bender that really tore up the front end. Bumper is broken open. Hood won't ... Read More
the first thing you need to do is determin whether it is a 3 cyl or 4 cyl, since the 91 geo metro only came with a 3 cyl, if it is a 4 cyl than someone has replaced the drivetrain with a suzuki swift. so if you have a 4 cyl ask for a distributor cap for a suzuki swift (they only come with 4 cyl.) hope this helps :) ... Hello, The Geo Metro 1.0 and 1.3 liter motors each take very different distributor caps. The 1.0 liter motor has 3 cylinders, and takes a distributor cap that has 3 spark plug wire sockets on it (for the wires which go to the 3 spark plugs on the 1.0 engine). I believe that is the cap which everybody has been showing you; because the 1.3 liter 4 cylinder motor did not ... Read More
I have a 1991 Geo Metro LSI, 2 door hatchback. I cannot find a distributor cap that fits. All references from part stores including the chevy dealership gives out the smaller diameter model. I need the slightly larger one. Which cap goes with what motor. My distributor cap I have now is about to die. I need to find one that fits and I am at a loss. Being a girl ... Read More
I have a 1991 Geo Metro that was in storage for 7 years, with 75w90 in the 5-speed manual trans, which was fine before that, but now won't downshift to 1st or 2nd without stopping or double-clutching, since the 1st and 2nd gear synchros aren't doing their job. Downshifts to 3rd and 4th work fine. I envision the car sitting for 7 years and the the oil forming varnish or sludge ... Read More
I will not worry about the clutch. If it is 56000 original miles, the clutch shloud hold even in thge city traffis over 120 000 miles ( depend on yuou driving skills). The synchronizers ( like sombody already stated) are problem, but I will not fixed. I will wait for the time when clutch will be "low" ad replaced the clutch and rebuild the transmission. I have a 1991 Geo Metro. I bought it about a month ago because I need a fuel efficient car to travel back and forth to work . My question is, why did they stop making the 3 cylinder Geo? It was (still is) a great little vehicle, and with the high price of gas today, it just makes a lot of sense to own one. Trouble is, you can't buy ... Read More

I have a 1991 Metro Geo. Had burnt valve o n exhaust which is normal for these little cars. I have weak spark at the plugs. Not a fat blue one, but a red one. Starting checking ignition found the coil. Not original. A replacement coil that had external resister required. Wasnt one with this car. I have a 1991 Geo Metro 2 door hatchback that I'm fixing up for a commuter. I've already done considerable work to the car. I've heard about the problems with the EGR. In addition to replacing or cleaning out the EGR do I need to pull the intake and/or exhaust manifolds and clean out the passages? If so, how do I determine where those passages are? My shop manual isn't very ... Read More
I redone the engine by my self. Both engine 3 cyl. : the 1991 after rebuild registered on cold engine compression: 214, 208, 204. The engine # 2 -1994 also 3 cyl. registered 208, 204, 199 psi. The first engine I assembled with very close tolerances on rings ( 1 compr, + 2 oil rings. The pistons and the conrods/wristpin where registered at 675 gramms (3). The second engine was assembled ... I'm not sure by your definition - body work on my metro - if it is very bad, you will have problem to finish perfect surface for paint. Any bondo, fiberglass, will need lot of sending, priming. I will not waist my time for fix-up. Just drive and enjoy the fuel economy. Look for another Geo before 1995 ( Personally I do not like after 1995 and up) and find perfect ... Read More
I just bought a 1991 Geo Metro LSI from a tow company auction. It has 147,000 miles and runs pretty darn good for the whopping total of $195.00 that I paid for it. The A/C even works!!The only real problem I have is keeping it at a constant speed. When I am at the speed I want, it wants to act like I dont have my foot on the pedal? Is ... Read More
The three-cyl Metro engine has very tiny exhaust valves, which wear out over the years. I have had a 1991 and now drive a 1992 model, and on both I have rebuilt the engine. Having the valves replaced and the cylingers honed will make it a top-notch gas saver and stop that oil use. :D
I had a similar problem with my 95 Geo. It either wouldn't start or just had no guts. My mechanic found that it was the little pin that held the piston/crankshaft in place - I had recently changed the head gasket and he said that the person who had done this had not tightened this part enough. He told me he managed to change the (tiny) part (added some glue as ... Read More
As you will note from my post re an electrical problem, I have a 1991 Geo Metro, five speed manual, that is still alive and kicking. It is beginning to look a bit beat up, but still runs well. It has never used oil (at least I have never had to add oil between oil changes - which I try to do every 3000 miles, no more than 4,000) The engine ... Read More
I love my Metro 1991 model, five speed manual. 175,000 miles on it, engine and gear box never touched, clutch adjusted once, and that is it. I still can get 47 in city and 53 on country roads. But a problem is driving me nuts. There is some kind of intermittent short in the electrical system running the battery down, sometimes overnight. This has been going on for many months, but ... I have a small problem. First of all, I own a 1991 Geo Metro LSi with about 100,150 miles on it and when I accelerate, I get a knocking vibration in the gas pedal. Sometimes it stops and sometimes it starts right up when I accelerate. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem may be?
This past weekend I purchased a 1991 geo metro for my son who is 15. It will be his first car. It is a 1.0 with auto and working air. 134,000 mile. I paid $500 for it. It is well maintained and needed nothing other than some fluid changes. Question. Are there any geo metro forums out there beside edmunds? Any input on where to get parts and what to look ... I have a friend who is looking at 2 cars....a 1991 Geo Metro, 42K mis, one owner and all service records available...and a 1992 VW Jetta, 103K mis, current owner has only had it 2 months, no service history. Personally, I think it is a no-brainer in favor of the Metro...but she is not so sure. Any opinions?
Hi everyone! I just wanted to say that I recently purchased a 1991 Geo Metro Lsi, 2-door, automatic in April 2002 and so far I really like this peppy little car. It gets me from point A to B in no time flat and the gas mileage is incredible! I can fill up with only $10 and it lasts for two weeks! The car had 98k miles on it when I ... Read More
Hi, I've bought a 1991 Geo Metro 3 cyl 5spd hatchback and it ran great up till around 68,000 miles. After that I noticed a drop in performance. I thought it might have needed a tune up. Until it couldn't pass the smog test. Turned out I had burned an exhaust valve. THAT was expensive! Other than that, they seem to run like a swiss watch. Very reliable. I had the ... Read More
Wow! That does sound like you've got problem(s). What size engine do you have? The 3 or 4 cylinders. I have a 1991 Metro with 3 cylinders and it has close to 130,000 miles (I'm the original owner). Only had 1 valve replaced since I bought it new. Other than that, just oil/filter and 1 timing belt (at 80,000 miles). Some mechanics have told me the 1.0 liter 3 cylinder engine ... Read More
Back in 1991 when I bought my Metro (base, not XFi), I originally wanted to get an XFi for the fuel mileage. I found out a couple of things. 1) The XFi has lower horsepower. XFi gets 49 HP while the base and the LSi gets 55. 2) The XFi fuel is leaned out considerably. 3) Chevrolet GEO strongly discouraged anyone ordering optional air conditioning for the XFi. It wasn't offered ... Read More
Alan, Wouldn't you know Suzuki kept the GOOD stuff at home! (ha,ha) All those wonderful options... gee guys, don't cha want to share it with the USofA? Guess not. As for the "dog"-a-matic, it does rev, but it seems like power-to-weight ratio (gears and rear end), are matched. Yet, it does buzz on the freeways. Gas mileage suffers. I've been waiting for Suzuki to come out with a 4-speed auto (and ... Read More
