EDITORS' RATINGS OVERALL SCORE:

RATING Overall

The 2008 Taurus is a bit more than a rebadged Five Hundred. A better V6 engine and six-speed automatic (instead of the CVT) improve performance to acceptable levels. Ho-hum styling and interior details that look inherited prevent the Taurus from scoring higher.

DETAILED EDITORS' RATINGS

RATING Dynamics

This enlarged Taurus now sports a 3.5-liter V6 engine. It's no rocket ship, but drivers are unlikely to complain of a lack of power or torque for freeway merges and passing maneuvers -- even in the heavier, new-for-this-year all-wheel-drive model. Handling isn't particularly engaging, but the Taurus is stable and the steering has some feel to it.

RATING Comfort

Built from the shell of the now-discontinued Five Hundred, the Taurus is quite large inside. The ride is soft and well-isolated without being too floaty, but fans of a taut, well-controlled ride might not like it. Seat comfort is good, but the driver seat felt a bit high to our tallest drivers. Overall quietness is above average.

RATING Function

Trunk space is huge -- more than a Crown Victoria. Audio and HVAC controls are located in good spots, but the all-button interface isn't ideal. For example, a tuning knob for the audio system would be better than the flat button provided here. Despite acres of space, the center stack controls seem lifted from other products and scrunched together. Steering wheel controls are available.

RATING Design/Build Quality

The Taurus draws little attention to itself. Its styling is quite conservative on the outside and simple on the inside. Interior materials quality is generally good, but top-trim models wear a bit too much imitation wood. Much of the switchgear appears straight out of the parts bin, diminishing the impression that this is a fresh design.

DETAILED PROFILE:

Comfortable

Soft ride and plenty of space give the Taurus a big dose of traditional American comfort.

Family Friendly

If you don't want to follow the herd and buy a minivan or SUV, the Taurus is a sedan with plenty of space.
