I had posted prior about the same problems with my 2000 Ford Taurus. We also replaced just about everything in hopes of finding and fixing the culprit; nothing helped. Ford is well aware of these failure issues, but will NOT issue a recall. Most of these "undetermined" difficulties are tied to your On-board Diagnostic (OBD) System. Unfortunately, you must take your vehicle to a licensed Ford dealer to utilize their diagnostic ... Read More
It appears to be a common problem with Ford/Mercury autos for this period. The splines strip out on the torque converter cog so that the output shaft no longer makes a connection. Possibly poor heat treatment/bad parts production. You can't expect that Ford would voluntarily take responsibility when a ton of these drive trains have had the problem; ours with just under 28,000 mi. but out of 3 year warranty. We ... Read More
I am looking to replace my 2005 Avalon, and have started looking at the Taurus again, after owning several of them in the "past century". I am pleased with the Avalon, but not with all of the recent recalls, which is likely to cause a reduction in resale value. In reviewing various websites, which purport to provide unbiased opinions and comparisons, it is obvious to me that most of them give ... Read More
I was driving my 2005 Ford Taurus when it seemed to slip out of gear. I couldn't get it into any gear, even reverse. I took it to the Ford dealership and they told me it was the torque converter. After a little research I called them back and said it seemed this was a common problem. They asked me about documented upkeep which I had none since I do most ... Read More
The spec 0-60mph time for the new SHO is 5.2 seconds, which is 0.4 secs faster than my 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T AWD. On Ford's own website (www.fordvehicles.com/2010taurus) there is a video comparing 0-60mph times against an Audi A6 V8. The Ford won each of the 5 time trials in a time of 6.07 seconds, which is a whole lot slower than my Magnum. Does anyone know why the claimed time ... Read More
I've done this and it's pretty simple. The computer module is part of the fuse panel. It's located above the drivers left foot. The fuse panel is actually 3 circuit boards with the fuses sticking out. On the side of the white plastic portion is a 5 digit number. That is the code. If the fuse panel/computer is replace you need to reprogram the key fobs and the door panel. I ... Read More
So basically everyone is complaining that they can't buy a new Taurus for the same rock bottom, huge rebate, fleet queen pricing as the 2005 Taurus. In other words, you're looking for a bargain and Taurus ain't it. Too bad. Ford won't get profitable giving away cars. If you want a bargain go buy a Kia. The Taurus looks to be the best car Ford has produced in a long time. ... Read More
Well a test of a rear drive G37 vs. an AWD SHO is not apples to apples. They should have tested the G37X. Those extra few pounds, the extra cost of the AWD system as well as the parasitic losses of the drivetrain for fuel economy would have evened out the score alot. Not to say that that is the proper car to compare. Really, size for size they should have ... Read More
I had a 2000 Taurus with the Vulcan engine. The engine itself was alright, although we called it a "tortoise" in the performance area. However, you are getting near where we started getting nickel and dimed with leaking gaskets, bad sensors, belt tensioners, etc. That all starts to add up at a couple hundred a pop several times a year. We also had continual brake problems, door and window seal leaks ... Read More
OK, as I haven't posted in a while; 1) The current generation Camry looks about as bad as can be. It reminds me of a hot dog looking at the front end (the current generation Chrysler 300 and last GM vans, but especially the Pontiac Montana SV6, also). 2) I would not by any means say I love it, but the look of the Taurus looks nice, like a dubbed-up Lincoln ... Yes, the Malibu is a beautiful design and vastly superior to the last generation. I agree that the Taurus will not attract buyers with its looks. That is more reason why Ford needs to shake things up a bit by promoting it's virtues other than looks. A Blandmobile sure isn't going to sell itself. Someone on another site suggested Ford place a Taurus in every mall in America so people could ... Read More
Oh, by the way they said since we noticed the leak in 2005 (but reported it in 2007) and didn't take it in for service then we missed the warranty period. And that if we would have purchased the 100,000 mile extended warranty we would be covered. So the best they could do was 10%.
Ah, sorry. I've recently started shopping cars with (and for) my grandmother, and we had looked at the Taurus SEL. I was thinking it came with Stability Control standard. I do understand the difference in TC and SC, but was apparently misinformed about the Ford. And yes, things like auto-temp and auto headlights are things that narrow the price gap, but you have to want those things for the gap to ... Read More
Hey Captain Morgan, quit the bottle. honestly. The new 3.5L is not part of the Duratec family, but rather an all new design. It was engineered from the beginning, however, to have the same height and width dimensions as the current 3.0L Duratec. from here http://www.autoblog.com/2005/11/09/breaking-news-ford-announces-new-3-5l-v6-and-- - - six-speed/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Duratec_engine#Duratec_35 http://www.myfordedge.com/specs/2007-ford-edge-powertrain.php FORD’S NEW DURATEC 35 V-6 NAMED TO WARD'S '10 BEST ENGINES' LIST; V-8 GRABS TOP HONORS AGAIN http://media.ford.com/newsroom/release_display.cfm?release=24981
If my memory serves me correctly, it was turning around 1,700RPM at a constant 70MPH. BTW . . . the 28.8MPG combined over the 1,400 miles was with highway speeds above 70 - generally around 75 average. During one section of open rural, and very unpopulated, interstate I did take it up to over three digits just for grins, but for only a few miles. The 25% city driving was truly ... Read More
I agree with your findings as a 2006 500 owner. And all the things you folks are hearing/reading about the New 2008 Taurus, quietness, room, safety, comfort are ALREADY in the 2005-07 500's. Except for some visual changes the only real differences are 5.9% interest and $500 cash back vs. 0.0% and $1000 cash back and the 3.0 Duratec that has been bored out to 3.5 with vvt for 57 hp ... In fairness to Ford, the new 2008 Taurus is more than just a rebadged 2007 Ford 500. The addition of the new modern engine and the new six-speed automatic transmission means the other half of an all new car finally arrived. The body and interior may be recognizable derivations of the 500, but the new drive train is transformational and deserves a new, more marketable name. I could have gone with ... Read More
Actually I can only find the 24V Duratec engines in the 2004's Ford didn't make the 2005's with the Duratec's.
I like your write-up and agree that the 2008 Taurus is a better vehicle with enhanced safety, and is roomier. I own a 2005 Taurus wagon and 1990 Taurus sedan and I really like both vehicles but the 500/Freestyle is a more advanced platform. On another note, Ford Fusion's built after January 2007 have enhanced front structures and perform better in the both the front offset and side impact crash tests ... Read More
yeah right - the 500 already is having a great deal of trouble holding its value, can you imagine what will happen to that value when the model is discontinued and replaced by something called the Taurus that happens to have a real engine in it. You won't be able to give away a used 2005-07 500/Montego. Going one step further - given that the old style 2006 Tauri can be ... Read More
Let's face it, image, and overinflated egos, are what sell many of the high line makes, and many SUVs here in the good old USA. Manufacturers love it, as they make substantially larger profits supplying what egocentrics "think" they need. That being said I just bought a 2001 Sable LS Premium with 36,000 miles on the clock for my daughter who's in graduate school for $6,000. The car was never a ... Read More
Like I've said, the 500's acceleration has been more about the perception than reality. Yes, Ford was more than remiss to introduce what is essentially a full-size car with only one engine, and a 3.0 at that I guess Ford made the mistake, then, of thinking people were RATIONAL. Here we have people bashing the Five Hundred because it "can't get out of its own way" . . and I seriously ... Read More

Oh, geez, go to bed! Pinto or Escort names have nothing on Focus. The 2000 Focus was so much better than Escort that it buried it. And the European continues that excellence even if the American version no longer does. But 500 is POS name that mever should have seen the light of day. A few people bought it this half-baked product, but not enough to get it on the radar ... Read More
If Ford wanted to properly revive the Taurus moniker, it should have applied the name to the car that became the Fusion back in 2005. With the combined appeal of the new design and the Taurus name, it is very likely that the new mid-size would be selling at a faster pace than it is now, especially since there have been (to my knowledge at least) no recalls or flaws with ... It's a good move, period. They never should have dropped the names in the first place. Taurus is a known entity, 500 is not. Taurus may have baggage, but it is better to have a name in print than not. All this brings to peopel's minds again what the Taurus used to be before Ford ruined it. Besides, lots of people LIKE their 2000-2005 bland Tauri. And it remained their best ... Read More
I have been trying for months to find out the key code number for my Taurus. In the handbook, it says the key code is on the computer module. I have no idea where the computer module is. Can someone please help me? Thanks
Greetings, I have a 2005 Taurus with 33K, 3.0L. I have noticed that only on the first start of the day, for 1-2 minutes, there is a clunking noise each time I press the brake pedal about 1”. The RPM’s go down with the brake pedal and the car will move forward (very slightly). It does this everyday on only the first start of the day. The Ford dealer had an ... Read More

I have just heard the next company cars will be the 500's. I also know my company will not ... Read More
It's been a long time since Ford spent a dime on the Taurus and I think that is a shame. When the first Taurus came on the scene it was a fresh new look at building a mid size sedan. I tend to agree with "badgerfan". However with all respect I will add the following. In June I purchased a new 2005 car. My previous car was a 2001 Taurus. I looked at the 2005 Taurus and within minutes came to the conclusion that the 2005 was a virtual twin to my 2001. It was painfully apparent that Ford hasn't bothered to develope the Taurus. I couldn't see the advantage to ... Read More

Well, my guess is you are not comparing apples to apples here in terms of what trim level you drove. Probably you drove a 2005 base Taurus vs a loaded 1987 Taurus. I have a 2003 Taurus and have no problems getting to the rear plugs. I've infact had all six of my spark plugs out. I had the same problem in my Ford Contour but my parents also have a V-6 Grand Prix (2005) with the plugs in the rear. Try going ... Read More
My car has had a continuous problem with the engine light coming on. My Ford mechanic said that it is usually something to do with the emission system and is nothing serious. Is it normal to see vapors or smoke come out of the engine oil stick after driving at highway speeds? I have a 2005 Taurus that I had noticed this on with the 3.0 Flex Fuel Engine, would I need to change over to synthetic oil?
I just did an inventory check on three Ford dealers in my area. One had 14 2005 Tauri, the other two had 4-5 each. This tells me Ford is still allowing their dealers to get them for sale to the general public. I would bet Ford will still allow sales to dealers at least up until the Fusion comes along. I cannot comment on the seats in the 2005 models, but ... Read More
"It states there that Taurus will disappear sometime before 2008. Primarily being sold to Fleet/rental car companies between now and when Ford eventually stops production" There seems to be conflicting information. Yes I had my 1999 Taurus, recall fix ?? on 2/3/2005. It has a popping noise on the right front also. Do Ford know what to do now.
Yes, Taurus likely will be discontinued completely in the next 1-3 years. It is still around for 2005 model year, though with less models available, only SE and SEL. May still be around for 2006. Ford is being vague. Replaced by Five Hundred sedan and Freestyle wagon/suv which are on the market now and are bigger than Taurus. Also in 2006 model year Ford Fusion will be introduced which likely will ... Read More

Taurus will remain in production through 2009, primarily for fleet and budget minded buyers. Ford Five Hundred debuts for 2005 model year, and Futura debuts for 2006 model year, but Taurus will still be around for a long time.
Ford is replacing the Taurus around 2005, I've been wandering whether the manufacturer will also retire de Sable. Has anyone read or heard something on this topic, and if yes where?
realize that the Vulcan has only been used in the Taurus. The debut of the Taurus was 1985 as an 86 model. If Ford is going to keep the current edition around until 2005 that means this style will be in production since the 1996 model year. That is a long time for any model and it doesn't help the Taurus. I believe the 3.8 GM motor was developed in the early ... Read More
