I had posted prior about the same problems with my 2000 Ford Taurus. We also replaced just about everything in hopes of finding and fixing the culprit; nothing helped. Ford is well aware of these failure issues, but will NOT issue a recall. Most of these "undetermined" difficulties are tied to your On-board Diagnostic (OBD) System. Unfortunately, you must take your vehicle to a licensed Ford dealer to utilize their diagnostic ... Read More
Try replacing the Cruise Control Switch. I know a few years ago Ford had recurring problems with the switches across the model lines. I had a 2001 Taurus and the only way to deactivate the Cruise was to hit the brake.
I have a 2001 Ford taurus and after 130K miles the pump went out in December. My father in Law owns a ford dealership and has run the service dept for 40 years. I'm having this exact same issue with my 2002 Ford Taurus. Driving down the road it will just turn off then back on. Every light on the dash comes on. Also when it comes back on everything is dim, dash light, headlights, etc. After a few more minutes of driving everything comes back on fully lit. Then sometimes when I turn off the car and get out all of the lights ... Read More
I wish the new products well. There are plenty of reviews from new or recent owners available on the forums. I wanted to extoll the trouble free history of my 2000 Mercury Sable now ten years and 140,000 miles old. 1) no major unexpected repair charges except a fuel pump at 100,000. 2) one brake job at 90,000 miles 3) no exhaust system issues except new oxygen sensors at 120,000. I finally got to sit in a 2010 Taurus at the Ajc Auto Show. As nice as the car is, it is ridiculous how cramped the interior is for a car that is 202 inches long. My ford will start by won't stay running! I have to pump the engine to keep it running for a little while, The minute I stop pumping it shuts off. Please advise. Thanks
The problem (and we hope Ford is aware of this and taken corrective action) is that the foam sponge backing to the vinyl 'decomposes' which allows the vinyl to slip out from behind the mounting strips. My local car upholstery repair shop (in northern Virginia) replaced the vinyl (without a sponge backing) on my 2000 Taurus for $75 each rear door.
I have a 2009 Mercury Sable Premier FWD with 18" Pirelli' tires and app 4ooo miles and my car makes a "clunk" noise when going over bumps at slow speed. I have taken it back to a local Ford Dealer and they replaced both front struts and also the strut mounts and said that the sound is gone. Obviously they are deaf! So I found this forum and noticed that this ... Read More
Whether you choose to believe this or not, Ford has been making cars that people want. While I agree with many of your points, you are over-correcting here, sir. Ford did not get into the financial straits of the past few years, and lose so much market share since 2000 by only making cars people want. Nobody much wanted the Ford Five Hundred or 2008 Taurus, even if they were decent ... Read More

I think all of you but Allen are missing something here. Yes, Ford products have depreciated markedly of late, and historically as well (I'll get to a personal example), but this has not always been true for all models in all times. I am a Sable (Taurus) owner who considers my 2000 Sable Premium (all needed accessories including sunroof, power everything, climate control, 27 mpg average) to have been a great value @20K. It was already large enough to carry ... Read More
I think Ford anticipates that the sales numbers of the SHO will not be large. The key is whether it gives a boost to the lesser Tauruses. They, too, have a bigger price tag (by $4-5K) than prior models. Now in the high twenties and low thirties rather than the former low twenties and high twenties. The markings of the SHO are subtle and it will not easily be distinguished from ... Read More
I found the weight quotes just by goggling the 2010 model for weight and HP and agree that the 3109 sounds too low. The point stands however tht the SHO is going to be 600-700 pounds more than the Accord which is now rated as a full size sedan (no longer qualifies as mid-sized). I have read that AWD adds about 200 pounds. The points about torque are well taken and ... Read More
I was able to find the numbers. A 2000 Merecury Sabkle (Ford Taurus) weighed 3325 and had 200 hp for a weigh to hp ratio of 16.6. the SHO is advertised in this story as 4365 pounds and 365 hp for a weight/hp ratio of 11.9, so it should move better than the earlier generation of Tauruses. Still imagine if they had held the weight down to 3500 then the weight ... Read More
Today's edmunds "first drive" variant on the SHO claims a weight of 4368 pounds. Why in the world would it weigh so much. My 2000 Sable (Taurus cousin) weighs 3600; the first montego/500 series weighed about 3900. Why the incessant journey to morbid obesity? The new engine with 365 horses will be performance strapped trying to push all this lard about. Where is the extra weight and why? The SHO sounds ... Read More

I had a 2000 Taurus with the Vulcan engine. The engine itself was alright, although we called it a "tortoise" in the performance area. You did say you drove the car to the dealership right? So the car wasn't totally gone yet and you didn't imply that it got their by the skin of its teeth. Not sure that I agree with all of your statements. Yes, the 3.8 was saddled with a four-speed auto so there were some long gaps between gears. I don't negotiate on holdback. In my experience, that only sets up a hostile negotiation, therefore an even more miserable buying experience. I'm happy with the deal.
we also have the same problem with peeling door panels on our 2002 Ford Taurus. I have contacted the Ford Customer Relations via phone, received a case number and have sent a letter to them along with pictures. I have asked Ford to reimburse for the cost of replacement which was done by the dealer to the tune of about $350-400 for each door. Have not heard back yet.
I think it's pretty impressive that in the 2008 Taurus, the new 3.5L Duratec hooked up to the same 6-speed automatic gets 2 MPG better on the Highway, and 1 MPG better combined compared to the 2007 Five Hundred with the old 3.0L Duratec. Very interesting, and thanks for the post. Our local dealer had posted discounts in the windshield of every Ford on the lot. OK, as I haven't posted in a while; 1) The current generation Camry looks about as bad as can be. It reminds me of a hot dog looking at the front end (the current generation Chrysler 300 and last GM vans, but especially the Pontiac Montana SV6, also). 2) I would not by any means say I love it, but the look of the Taurus looks nice, like a dubbed-up Lincoln ... Yes, the Malibu is a beautiful design and vastly superior to the last generation. I agree that the Taurus will not attract buyers with its looks. Someone on another site suggested Ford place a Taurus in every mall in America so people could ... Read More
Lead article in latest edition of trade mag "Automotive News" is the suprisingly high number of dealers who are completely dumping Ford. Dusting off the Taurus/Sable names smacked of desperation. This car (like the 2000 and newer Monte Carlo) is a bit too large and Ford's deplorable habit, practiced thru the decades, of offering a new nameplate that is underpowered and lacking interior refinement (Escort, Tempo, Contour, Focus), is suicidal.
I too am willing to consider joining a class action if Ford is unwilling to fix the problem. Has anyone yet approached a dealer about this problem with the vinyl material coming loose from the rear doors on the Taurus?

I thoroughly disagree, my good host, that Ford is pulling in an old name. Up to last fall, Taurus was their best seller by far, even with total neglect. Problem is, the 2006 was Ford's best seller, but they all went to Hertz, Enterprise, and Dollar. Ford admitted they artificially inflated sales by dumping these cars on the rental market, and finally realized it was a bad idea. Their January sales ... Read More

Hello! I have a 2001 SES with 84,700 miles on it now. It is wonderful. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that my original Ford Motocraft battery croaked today. So I replaced with an Everlast 2-year from Wal-Mart for $39.77 + tax. Just thought I'd let anyone know who has a Taurus near my mileage. Secondly, I borrowed a friend's 2002 Dodge Intrepid to go get the battery. The ... Read More
I had my starter on my 2002 Ford Taurus replaced about 6 weeks ago. Now, car is giving me the same starting problems. I am taking car back to shop tomorow. I am assuming mechanic will tell me starter is defective and will replace with a new one. However, I wonder if something else could be casuing the problem. Do you know of any history of starter problems with 2002 Taurus? ... Read More
It's been a long time since Ford spent a dime on the Taurus and I think that is a shame. When the first Taurus came on the scene it was a fresh new look at building a mid size sedan. It looked strange for only a few minutes to some and then flew out of the doors of Ford dealers at record numbers. Ford owned the segment for many years and ... Read More
My beloved 2000 Taurus wagon was totalled out in a crash on April 19, 05 and I am looking to replace it with another one. I had this car since 2002, bought it as a red carpet lease return with low miles and balance of factory warranty on it. My only major repairs were a windshield wiper motor and a brake shift lock switch that were covered by warranty (lucky for ... Read More
Well, my guess is you are not comparing apples to apples here in terms of what trim level you drove. Probably you drove a 2005 base Taurus vs a loaded 1987 Taurus. By contrast, I owned a fairly base 1990 Taurus L, bought new and drove ten years, and I now drive a 2000 Taurus SES again bought new (One notch below the SEL which was the top of the line ... My Mom's 2000 ford taurus is having problems with the AC. It will blow cold air but not through the vents. The dealership said that they would need to take the dash out and look at the air plenum door. This door switchs the airflow to come out the vents. The dealership mentioned that the door may be warped and would need to be replaced. The cost of pulling the dash ... Read More
I feel your pain. sorry. First, you should have asked for a printout of every diagnosis that they put it through. Ask before dropping the car off if the printer is working and let them know the printout is part of what you are paying for in the diagnosis. That machine, I'm told has a live hook up to Ford where they maintain databases. How much info is exchanged in the ... Read More
Just spent the entire weekend trying to replace the 3 rear spark plugs on my 2000 Taurus. Finally gave up deciding this was an impossible task. I tried every possible way to get to these plugs. I tried to reach them from the top and bottom of vehicle. I tried to move the engine forward as i was instructed by the auto parts store where i bought the plugs, still no ... Read More
My car has had a continuous problem with the engine light coming on. My Ford mechanic said that it is usually something to do with the emission system and is nothing serious. I bought the car used in 2002, have had my car serviced regularly, and racked up only 65,000 miles. Service records indicate that this engine light has been a problem off and on for about two years. Every time ... Read More
