Hello Posters, I got lazy a week ago and ignored my low fuel indicator. As I finally pulled into the pumps, my 1998 Ford Taurus stumbled and missfired. The tank took over 13.5 gallons, therefore only 2.5 gallons were remaining on the bottom of the tank. The moment, I restarted the 3.0 liter engine the "Service Engine Soon" light came on. The manual says the light should go out after a ... Read More
After this vehicle sat for 6 months the left rear power window will not work from either the master control or the switch on the door itself. All the other windows are working fine from the master control and on the remaining doors. The electric door lock on the same door works. The window electric motor is not engaging. I presume the problem is a bad switch on the drivers door ... Read More
I have a 1998 Ford Taurus sedan and recently purchased a kayak. I have been searchinf for a roof rack but ones that fit the Taurus sadan cost more than the kayak! It's really frustrating!
I think it's pretty impressive that in the 2008 Taurus, the new 3.5L Duratec hooked up to the same 6-speed automatic gets 2 MPG better on the Highway, and 1 MPG better combined compared to the 2007 Five Hundred with the old 3.0L Duratec. I'd say Ford definitely refined the Duratec V6: 60 more HP *and* better fuel economy. This new engine pulls the Taurus to 60 MPH in 6.8 seconds, ... Read More
Sure, remove any screws such as behind the door latch and maybe under the arm rest, remoce the door lock by unscrewing it and the panel should "pop" off,its attached by clips using pressure,be careful if you have power windows, start at the bottom and unpop the plastic clips, when putting it on use hand pressure and replace the screws.

Sent back to the factory??? I don't know of anyone in a collision where the car gets sent back to the factory...?? That being said, they did decide to repair the car. As I had mentioned, the airbags never deployed, it wasn't that severe of a crash, but expensive enough as it was. After the repair shop was finished I immediately drove it over to my Merc dealer who examined the ... Read More

Yes, Ford Motor is in BIG trouble. You only have to look at its position in 1998 and now to see that: from 26% of the market and possibly able to challenge GM, to: 14% car sales and 16% overall. Bill Ford gets no credit stemming the tide downwards. Taurus? No different than rebadging the Zephyr into the Mark Z. Yes bring the name back, yes add more BHP and torque ... Read More

It leaks when transmission fluid gets hot. Before that it does not leak. But when it gets hot - it leaks like hell. I had this problem in my '94 Taurus. I bought it with more than 100K and it was commersially used (or misused) but cheap. I discovered AT to leak badly at parking lot 40 miles away from home, I drove it stopping once in a while to add ... Read More

I'll bet it IS leaking. My experience is this. I went on a small road trip in my 1997 taurus. I pulled off the highway to get gas an d realized my transmission wasn't working. I got out and it was leaking badly. I managed to get it home stopping every few miles to refill it. The next morning, I jacked up the car, put it on stands and started it ... Read More

Hi Folks, I have been driving a 1996 Ford Taurus since 1998 and really enjoyed the car. It is now too expensive to repair and I was offered a 2006 SEL Taurus with 18,000 miles for $14,000, it is fully loaded. Can anyone offer any advise on what I should pay for this vehicle? I would appreciate it. Oh, I am a female buyer and not good at negotiating car deals. ... Read More
does anyone know how you remove the lower ball joints on a 1998 ford taurus?
My 1998 Taurus is burping transmission fluid as well. I was told by a Ford dealership that the breather is plugged. A typical problem with this car. I purchased the two items and was told they were easy to replace. That they were on top of the trans can. Now I can't find it. The part # for the breather valve is #YF1Z-7035-AA and the rubber cap #XS4Z-7L282-AA. Anyone know exactly ... Read More

1998 Taurus s/w, 114ks, recently had left front coil spring fracture, ruined tire...while parked! recall on 1999-2001 models only, anyone with similar problem and did you have any luck with Ford? Any other agencies to contact. Apparently recall only available to Eastern Canada because of salt.
All Taurus and Sable cars from 1998-up require Mercon V fluid (plain Mercon is NOT compatible, according to the service manual). From what I understand, Mercon V is a full synthetic fluid, or nearly so. It's good stuff by itself. In any case, whatever you pick, stick to ONLY those fluids that are Mercon V, not Mercon, not Dexron, not anything else. If it doesn't say that it meets Mercon V ... Read More

you can't compare taurus+sable to "each and all GM somewhat close to midsize sedans" because a) chevy and ford are direct competitors as mainstream basic autos. Chevy wants to beat ford. Can't beat ford when your model that directly competes with the taurus sells 1/3 of the taurus b) even you did group all of gm's mid size offerings into one group and compared its sales to the taurus, the question ...
