1996 Ford Taurus Sedan GL 4dr Sedan

Review

Nice-looking, comfortable car. The only problem was that nothing worked right. Had to replace the transmission - the transmission folks told me this is quite common - and the heater fan. The heating block cracked and had to be sealed. The air vent system never did work right, despite replacing the fan. The stereo didn't work right, and the turn signals worked sometimes, and sometimes they didn't. Gas mileage averaged around 20 miles per gallon, which was not acceptable to me. Finally, the Taurus got smashed in the side by a pickup and was totalled, but I walked away without a scratch - so it is a nice safe car. Otherwise, a complete turkey.

Worst Features

Forget it. Many of the used ones I've seen for sale have replaced transmissions. This car needs to be rebuilt by people who know and care about what they are doing.

Review

My experience with this car has been
very good. It is 8 yrs old and has
134,800 mile and the 3.0L Duratec is
still running well and it still rides
nice.

Review

I have owned this car for 8 years now.
Only major repair was heating core for
$500. Minor repair I performed myself
at no cost was putting pan gasket back
in place and retightening back up. Also
pressure cap on expansion tank needed
to be replaced. Other repair was a $20
or so idler pulley went bad - common
problem apparently.

Best Features

Lower cost than all other competing vehicles, very reliable, decent performance and very comfortable. Fold down rear seats allow me to place bicycle easily in back.

Worst Features

Place quality bearing in idler pulley, better quality heater core (went on my 1988 Taurus as well).

Review

Bought this car used with 46,000 miles
on it. Have replaced all four rotors,
the radiator, the AC system. AC is
broken again. Thermostat has been
replaced 3 times. Freeze plugs blew
out on interstate highway at about
50,000 miles and had to have head
gasket job. Car was in the shop nearly
every six weeks from the time I bought
it...

Best Features

Doors lock on takeoff. Fold-down rear seats.

Worst Features

Everything, including the quality of Ford replacement parts. I found that I was replacing the same parts over and over. Dealer service guys joked about cutting down a rain forest to print out the repair records...
