  From your description I would say you need to replace the Syncronizer Shaft Assembly. The TSB # is 05-22-12 you can read about it here TSB 05-22-12 I had The same problem

  Someone on one of the Ranger discussions on here just recently solved this problem. Something about there being a hose inside a hose on the filler, and the inside hose was loose, at the bottom I think. You might need to replace the rubber part of the filler hose. Search for all the Ranger discussion and look back over the last month, you should find the message I'm talking about.

  I'm not aware of significant transmission problems. There does seem to be some noise problems with the split driveshaft. I think for the trucks with the problem, if you push enough, Ford will replace the driveshaft with an aluimum (SP) one that is a 'cure'. Buy the Ranger. Enjoy several thousand dollars left in your pocket over the Toyota. And, you get a nicer looking truck.

  This might sound crazy, and I know I shouldn't go this fast but I have a 2003 Ford Ranger 4.0l. When you hit 90 mph the engine starts hesitating, like its not getting fuel.   1)Do all the 2003 ranger 4x4s have the new 4" alum driveshafts that are replacing the vibrating steel ones? 2)what kind of gas mileage does the 4.0L 4x4, 4.10 rear get? I do alot of highway driving at 70-80 mph.  Overall is everyone happy with their Rangers I had a lemon 1999 and swore off fords forever but 0% and a friend in the biz is luring me back. Thanks
