How can I find if a 2003 Ford Ranger has limited slip differential based on the vin? The auction does not say the type, and according to research on edmunds the difference between XL, XLT, etc. may be the difference if it has or does not have limited slip. Someone on one of the Ranger discussions on here just recently solved this problem. Something about there being a hose inside a hose on the filler, and the inside hose was loose, at the bottom I think. You might need to replace the rubber part of the filler hose. Search for all the Ranger discussion and look back over the last month, you should find the message I'm talking about.

I'm debating whether to go with a Ford extended warranty and would appreciate any opinions. I have a 2003 Ranger XLT, 3.0, 2wd, auto, limited slip, standard cab, tilt/cruise, short bed. My warranty expires March 2006. I have around 11k miles on the truck, bought new. I was looking at the 7yr/75k extracare coverage. Should run around $1100-1200. Thanks in advance for any replies.
I'm not aware of significant transmission problems. There does seem to be some noise problems with the split driveshaft. I think for the trucks with the problem, if you push enough, Ford will replace the driveshaft with an aluimum (SP) one that is a 'cure'. Buy the Ranger. Enjoy several thousand dollars left in your pocket over the Toyota. And, you get a nicer looking truck.
Get a Toyota Tacoma. You'll be much happier since you'll be driving it instead of waiting to have your Ford or Dodge repaired.

If you think the 3.0l is weak, then don't even think about the 2.3l. In reality, the 3.0l is pretty good in the regular cab, especially with a stick. And pinging? Not in my 2003. Had to skip around quite a bit following a trail of dead topics to find you guys. I test drove a 2001 extended cab XLT today and was les than impressed. The 4.0 V6 felt like it had a good kick off the line and then leveled off and got weaker and weaker as speeds increased. The automatic seemed to have been programmed by a drunk engineer. And what's with those ... Read More
I'm getting about 17mpg around town in my old 2.8L V6 Ranger 4x4 5sp & I'm pretty sick of it. I'll probably pick up a Ranger with the new 2.3L 4cyl at some point. Unfortunately, it looks like you can't get the 7' bed with the 4cyl! I hope Ford changes their mind about that. I really can't predict where gas prices will be in, say, 5 years, so I'm going ... According to Ford's internal documents, Ford's 3.0L Vulcan V6 and 2.5L Ranger engines are both going to be discontinued. The Vulcan 3.0L will continue through the 2002 model year Ranger, although some production might spill over into early 2003 models. 2000 will be the last year for the 3.0L FFV Ranger. The Vulcan 3.0L will be replaced by an I-5 cylinder engine for Ranger/B-series light truck applications. BlueOvalNews was the first ... Read More

OK, how about talking about what we'd like to see in future Rangers. Say, the next complete redesign which is around 2003/2004. At the risk of offending a lot of people in this forum, let me start the ball rolling: --Replace the current OHV 3.0L in favor of the 200hp OHC 3.0L found in Taurus etc. This is a better base engine for 4x4 models and an excellent upgrade for cheaper ... It said Japanese and German manufacturers, it did not say "engineered". So what if the Ford 4.0 and 3.0 60 degree V6 are German engineered, Ford was never German. Oops! You know you are nitpicking just to make a point even if it is a bad one at that. Plastic intake manifolds are on the 4.0 not the 3.0. The Vulcan 3.0L will continue through the 2002 model year Ranger, although ... Read More
