I have a 2001 Ranger 4x4. Once in a wile the front right disc brake will lock up when pulling forward. can back up then pull forward about a foot then it locks up. Also when I turn left into a parking spot and hit the brake the peddle will go to the floor.

The Wipers, Speedometer and dome light don't work in my 2001 Ford Ranger. I replaced the wiper switch and checked the fuses to no avail. The problem started when my dome light was staying on and I pulled the bulb so not to run the battery down. Anyone have any fixes? Thanks

you were right it was the bearings the first mechanic was wrong I ended up taking it to the ford dealer and they replaced the bearing hub assembly on the passenger side $576 later.... ouch well at least there is no more noise/vibration thanks for the help

Your ABS control box may be dead??? My dad had his go out in his 92 4X4 and it had to be replaced. Same issues... ie. ABS light on all the time. Breaks work fine. when I drive my truck for an hr or so it wont start right away...it needs 5 min or so to start again...VERY ANNOYING!

On older models with 2-wheel ABS, the light could come on when the brake fluid was low. Usually only when the brake was pushed. In any case, check your fluid level. ABS is complicated, requires different procedures to even 'pull the codes', etc. That probably why the shop did not want to work on it.

What motor is this? Just to complicate your life - For 4L (the older 4L motor) Rangers in the years of this truck (2001-199?), many had the 'marbles in a tin can' knock/rattle. Never heard of 'oblong crankshaft belt and pulley'. 'Chatter when accelerating' is ping. I bet you have the 3L motor. Many of these ping, and the only solution is to use higher octane gas. These 3L have pinged for the last 15 years and Ford seems to not want to re-design them to stop it.
I have 97 Ranger that is chattering also. A Ford dealer told me that there is problem with the crankshaft belt and pulley. I guess the pulley gets oblong. This information was reluctantly given to me. And it was also "unsure". 300 dollar possible fix. Why can't dealers be honest? I understand the grey area, but huge corporations? Sup?I just got my 05 ranger egde back from the shop and the truck was making the same noise. So the machnic drove it and said the belt haddn't been tightened properly. so go to shop and have them take it for a drive. That's the best advice I could give you.

Actually there are two 2.3 liter engine. The first one was introduced in the 80's and was placed in Ranger until 1997. In 1998 the engine grew to 2.5 liters. Ford introduced the current 2.3 liter mazda developed engine half way threw the 2001 model year.

Why bother wondering what the whistle is? the tranny is blown and needs to be rebuilt regardless. but just for kicks, what might sound like a whistle could be air sucking into the the vacuum line going to the modulator valve, that can actually cause the tranny to act up real bad, but thats something that is some thing you have to hear for yourself to know what the sound is, ... They are essentially the same vehicle, except for some interior and exterior trim... Ford owns some large percent of Mazda. I don't know where the new (2001 and later OHC) 4L is built. My 2001 Ford Ranger has a light metal clicking sound when you turn either right or left. The tire store where I had my brakes done told me it was the bearings (4 wheel drive) I took it to the dealer and he said it was the lower ball joints. Has anybody had the same problem with this truck?

That I-4 is Mazda designed/engineered. It became the standard I-4 engine on the Ranger I believe last year, Model year 2002, or 2001. ..includes 2001-02 Rangers. In other words, if you have a 4.0 2001 or 2002 Ranger, as of the time of this TSB, it recommends NOT using 5-20. CHECK WITH YOUR FORD DEALER for most recent info before doing this, IN MY OPINION.

I have one of each. 1988 Ranger - 161,000 miles. Total repairs = radiator, water pump, transmission seal. 2001 Tacoma - 20,000 miles. No repairs. I will drive the Ranger over the Taco everytime if it's available because it's more comfortable, more powerful, better A/C, rides better, handles better and fits the driver better. regarding suggestions on tires, I had the Michelin Cross Terrain tires mounted on my 2001 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with 4.0 V6, 5-sp auto transmission. I would highly recommend them. They are very good highway tires, quiet with very good traction and highly rated. I live in Oregon, where we get a lot of rain, so I guess here is a good place to put them to the test. They are ... The driveline problem can most likely be resolved by getting the newly designed all aluminum driveshaft.
