Review

I inherited it from an elderly relative who bought it brand new. When I got it it had only 27K miles on it. It's noisy, it looks and feel cheap both inside and out. The fuel milege is terrible. If I drive it 65 I can squeeze 17mpg out of it. The electric door locks quit at 30K miles and the transmission gave up at 33K miles. Now they want $3K to put in a replacement. when I asked if the new transmission would last longer than the old one, the dealer just shrugged. I can't beleive what a piece of crap this truck is. Ford should be ashamed!

Favorite Features

AC works well.

Suggested Improvements

Where to start. The entire running gear is junk. This vehicle should get 20 mpg at highway speds, not 15. The transmission is only good for use as a boat anchor.

Review

All in all, a pretty good truck. By no means the best in the mid- sized/compact class. The truck is a lot of fun to drive, and gets the job done. The seats are comfortable, the extended-cab is functional. The towing/payload capacities are about as good as anything else in its class. I have used this truck for everything. Its reliability is great, never had a problem. The interior design is very plain, nothing special at all. The exterior is nice, but again, nothing special. The quality is good, everythings sturdy, its a Ford. The performance and drive are great. It handles turns well, breaking is nice, acceleration is suprisingly good. The fuel economy is terrible, 14 MPG!

Favorite Features

4WD, cab space, sound system, handling, ABS.

Suggested Improvements

Gas mileage! EPA estimated is 15 city, around 20 highway. In reality, it gets 13-14 City and 18-19 Highway (Well maintained). A full-sized gets better gas mileage. And keep in mind, this is only a V6! Would also like to see improvements in the design, it needs an update.

Review

Bought truck at 60000 miles. Looked and ran good but immediately ran into trouble, while on trip left front abs brake failed. Cost 550 bucks at dealer for new rotor pads and wheel bearing because sensor is part of the bearing. 2 years later same scenario on other side. Also front axle stared growling, haven't fixed that yet, as need another 12oo bucks for this. Now at 98000 miles relegated to only driving in winter, as it is now a carportqueen. Also inside box rotting out, although plastic outside looks like new.

Favorite Features

Interior nice. Looks good externally, handles nice. Good off road.

Suggested Improvements

Why not make the whole box of plastic? And why re-engineer abs system for simpler and cheaper repair

Review

I bought this truck used in 2005 with a 3.0LV6, with 68K miles on it. It provided me with a 4x4 at an affordable price for a Highschool student. Now, two years later, I have 86K miles and have had nothing go wrong with it other than normal wear and tear. For the price, you are getting a well-designed vehicle inside and out! Definitely a must have for any highschool student that has a parent willing to help them finance. Definitely not for anyone who needs to do heavy hauling or drives more than one other person in it though.

Favorite Features

A solid, well-designed interior and exterior, especialy for the price. Seats are comfortable, ride is smooth for a compact truck, and engine is reliable.

Suggested Improvements

3.0L V6 needs more horse power! I have to floor it to reach speeds past 50mph. Also, needs better gas mileage, I'm only getting 15mpg if I'm conservative. I should be able to get outstanding fuel economy if i'm giving up horsepower.

Review

Bought a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT with a 3.0L V6 4wd. The one word that best describes it is reliable. Bought it with 68k miles on it, and other than regular wear and tear, I have never had any problems with it. This truck is best for anyone who mainly drives by themselves, wants 4wd, and is looking for something newer at a lower price. I wouldn't reccomend it if you drive more than just you and one other person. No more room (even with the extended cab.), or if you have heavy hauling to do.

Favorite Features

Interior is built with high quality materials, exterior looks great. Very dependable truck! On the fly 4x4 is awesome in snow, especially when you have to shift in and out of it constantly.

Suggested Improvements

More horsepower! It has enough power for city driving, but if you want to pass someone, or just drive on the highway at all, you have to floor it. It takes me 4rpm to do what a V8 can do in 1.5rpm! Oh, and don't expect to save gas, my 3.0 gets 15mpg in the city

Review

Bought this vehicle six weeks ago from original owner who'd put 82,000 miles on it. Had it tuned up (new plugs, serpentine belt, engine coolant, etc.) and it runs great. Has 4.0 V-6 with 5 speed automatic. Ideal for hauling off yard debris, clipping or the occasional piece of furniture, etc. Excellent for towing my motorcycle. Gas mileage isn't great, but that's because of 4.10 rear end. So far so good.

Favorite Features

Seats look like new. Controls are mostly intuitive. Lots of torque. Looks good with 4x4 off-road package, stainless steel skid plate, etc.

Suggested Improvements

Better gas mileage would always be nice.

Review

First off the gas mileage is terrible. I am averaging about 14 miles to the gallon. We had to replace the transfer case motor at 75,000 miles. It was a 500 dollar part. Then 15,000 miles and a year and two weeks later it went bad again. It was over the warranty and that was $1000 in one year! We have had very very bad rear brakes. They are drum brakes and should last at least 50,000 miles they have lasted less than one thousand miles. No wonder that Ford is losing money. This truck was not even close to built Ford tough.

Favorite Features

4x4 when it works. Everything when it is not broken down.

Suggested Improvements

Gas mileage. Transfer case motors. Brakes.

Review

This truck has been a good, solid means of transportation. It is good for hauling standard cargo (though the back suspension is a little soft for heavier loads). However, as a daily driver it has mediocre power and lousy gas mileage (17mpg mixed!). If you need to haul light cargo, get the 4cyl. If you need to pull things, get a big diesel. As for myself, my next purchase will be a good hatchback. However, I won't be buying anything until my truck dies. Admittedly, with a Ranger, that could be a very, very long time.

Favorite Features

Reliability. The Ranger feels very solid and hefty. The seats are comfortable and the stereo is not bad.

Suggested Improvements

Power! I have to hit the "OD off" button when passing someone to get it to down shift correctly. Fuel economy! If you're gonna make a hefty 3.0 v6, at least make it powerful. Otherwise, you may as well have gotten the 4 cylinder model

Why can't Ford build a reliable transmission

Review

This is a vehicle that is rarely used, particularly over the last two and a half years since I drive a more gas thrifty 1999 Nissan Sentra. The vehicle has received regular maintenance per warranty, and yet at 58,000 miles is diagnosed with a failing third gear on an automatic. We had the same type of trouble on our 1991 Ford Taurus Wagon. Its transmission was replaced under warranty at 29,000 miles, and failed again about 50,000 miles later, at which time we all but gave the vehicle away as a trade-in on a reliable 1997 Honda Accord. The Ranger never got better than 20 miles to the gallon, and required premium fuel in the summer or when hauling any load. I hope Ford goes bankrupt.

Favorite Features

Suggested Improvements

Quit making cars and make farm implements or something else. Your cars are junk and waste the hard working family's money. I personally hope your entire company goes bankrupt. We didn't even get our brand new, off the truck Ford Ranger home before the fuel line disconnected from the fuel filter.
