Review of the 2000 Ford Ranger

  • Despite its substantial age, the 2000 Ford Ranger is still one of the wiser choices in the compact truck market.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Four-door entry, five-speed automatic and optional flexible fuel/electric powertrains, thoughtful interior.

  • Cons

Room in extended-cab area isn't enough for adults, questionable front-end styling.

  • What's New for 2000

For 2000, the 2WD can be had with a "Trailhead" off-road style suspension package complete with larger tires and wheels, giving it the tough look of its 4WD cousin. All 2000 Ford Ranger models have new wheel designs, and the XLT 4WD Off-Road Group receives a stainless-steel front-suspension skid plate.

Looking to buy my 2nd

Vehicle: 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 2dr Regular Cab LB

I bought my first Ford Ranger brand new with less than 100 miles on it in 2000. The day after Thanskgiving I was in a wreck and the truck was totaled. At the time I had over 178000 miles on it. I have to say the Ranger is the best vehicle I have ever owned price wise, mileage, maintenance, etc. With proper maintenance I only replaced the serpentine belt, timing belt, and the alternator during the 8+ yrs. I owned the truck. Loved the style, handling, and comfort it provided not to mention the deal I got from the dealership. My borther who deals in used cars was so impressed with my Ranger that he bought himself one and we both stand behind the Ranger 100%.

My first Ford Ranger I got 247,000 miles out of it with out a problem. The only expense was a transmission oil leak. When it was time for a new one I bought another Ranger. The worst mistake of my life! The truck had a valve problem from day one. The dealer said they did not see it? The transmission went at 73,000 miles (band 2). The engine died at 82,000 miles. Yes, I know how to take car of a vehicle. I taught automotives for 10 years and have been a shop/technology teacher for 19 years. Stay away from this truck!

I've had this truck for a few weeks now. Because mine is a manual, i've gotten it to get great, and horrible gas mileage. mine is also a 4 cyl, which is why i can get such good mileage. the acceleration is horrible though, even though it is a manual transmission.

When I retired I was looking for a small truck to use for house hold errands and light hauling (mulch, hobby equip. etc) I wanted to get good milage and a comfortable cab ride ( I didn't want to feel I was crammed inside a small compartment) and with this truck I got all i wished for. I like the utility the long wheelbase offers me without a big fuel bill. 22mpg avg.
