1997 Ford Ranger XLT 2dr Extended Cab 4WD Stepside SB
The Ranger is one the best vehicles I have ever owned. We are keeping it for our 13 year old to take over when he's 16. He can't wait! Other than usual maintenance and changing tires, nothing major has gone wrong. My father-in-law borrows it all the time for anything he has to haul. The 4 liter engine has great acceleration in city traffic. I would recommend a Ranger to anyone in the market for a mid-sized truck.
Four high on the fly. The first 2 years I owned this truck I lived in Idaho, and this feature saved my bacon a few times.
I know it's a truck and that mine is four-wheel drive, but it would be nice if the ride were a little smoother. On some paved roads I felt every seam and bump.
I had my Ranger for 5 1/2 years. Only
minor problems such as egr sensors,
vacuum lines, and replacing the hubs.
Have 112000 miles on and for the most
part the truck is reliable. I squeeze
out any where from 18 to 20 mpg on
consistent basis. My only complaints
about it are: rides like a lumber
truck, engine is breathless at highway
speed, seats are terribly
uncomfortable, autolocking hubs are a
joke-replaced mine with manuals, and
the brakes are really grabby when there
is a lot of moisture in the air. The
paint has stood up to time and use very
well and overall I think the Ranger is
a entry level vehicle for young buyers
who are looking for a reliable
Nothing real particular except the
light up cruise buttons and I like the
dash layout. The HVAC system is
awesome! A/C freezes you out, which I
Ranger needs to be a little bigger and
with more power. Ford needs to
completly redesign, re-engineer the
Ranger. Nothing has really changed
between '97 and '04 except for minor
body work, powerplant, interior, and

129,000 on my Ranger to date. Other
than basic maintenance items, the truck
has been maintenance free. 2wd is
horrible in snow as I anticipated even
with 200 lbs of sand in bed. Gas
mileage is a respectable 26mpg with the
4 cylinder engine. The truck is solid -
no rattles or squeaks.
A great little truck for the
homeowner. Just big enough for that
trip to the garden center or salvage
A full 4-door version of this truck
would be welcome.
