Hi, I have a 1997 Ford Ranger 2.3- 4 cylinder and it keeps breaking the starter, either the bendix or nose cone of the starter. It has only started doing this after the timing belt went out. I have had the belt fixed, it is in time, new fly wheel, and multiple starters put on it. It has a real hard start. It shakes the whole engine trying to start. It ... Read More
I inherited a 1997 Ford Ranger XL 2 Wheel-Drive at Christmas. We drove it home (8 hours) with no problems. Went the next day to have it inspected and they failed it due to the brakes. The years of Iowa road salt had really corroded the brake system, so I did the following: Had both front rotors turned, installed new front pads, installed new front calipers, had one rear drum turned, ... New guy here, I have a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT with 4.0 V6, 2 wheel drive. My probem is that everytime I hit the brake pedal, my right turn signal lights up. This includes both front and rear lights as well as the dashboard light. When I turn the signal on and hit the brake, the signal will not flash, take the foot off the brake, the signal works fine. I have a 1997 ford ranger and the interior dome light stays on all the time even when you close the doors or start the engine. Someone told me it could be the door relays but I have no idea where to find them could someone help me.
I have a 1997 ford ranger and the ABS & the brake light are both on at the same time any sugestions.
Nope, underneath the dash on the passenger side you'll find a large cylinder with a red button on top. That is your problem right there. That is ur fuelpump safty cutoff switch. Push and hold the button for about 5 to 10 seconds and it should be fine. But would recomend taking it to the nearest FORD dealer and have ur fuel pump checked, and Fuel Filter changed immediately once it ... Read More
is it possible for a 97 ford ranger motor can work for a 90? seem's like a large jump... not sure if it will work or not, let me know thanks
I'm hearing an alarm somewhere behind the glove box of my 1997 Ford Ranger. It only sounds after I first start the engine for 10 or 15 seconds then stops. It is a different sound than the normal seat belt alarms and such. The truck seems to be running ok.
This might sound a little strange and very time consuming but i got the time. I want to swap my 1997 ford ranger (gas) engine with a deisel engine. If anyone knows what type of deisel engine would fit or other things that would need to be changed in this process please let me know!
I own a 1997 Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder, 2.3L engine and am dissapointed with the acceleration now that I regularly have to merge into 70mph traffic. I'm very mechanically inclined, and was wondering if there was any relatively easy and inexpensive upgrade I could put in to significantly improve acceleration. My first serious thought was a turbo kit. Are there any turbo kits that will fit on this engine, ... Read More
My dome lite stays on when my 1997 Ford Ranger is started and the cabin temperature is higher than the outside temp. Spraying chemicals in the door latch is not a fix.
I think this is the year (or a couple of years about this age) with a 'usual' problem. I can't describe exactly the problem, with correct names, but here is my best try. The post on one of the 'air control' flappers (or the post on the control rod that moves the flapper) in the heater box is broken. It is plastic, and it just breaks. To repair, the dash must ... I own a 1997 Ford Ranger. About 2 years ago, my check engine light came on. I had it scanned, and it came up with a code of 1443B ( Evap Ctrl Sys/Vac Sys). I work in the automotive field, and asked a few mechanics if it was serious. They told me no, I was just polluting the air more than normal. About a month ago, I noticed that the truck ... Read More

I have a 1997 Ranger Splash model with 4cyl engine and 5 speed trans. The wipers only work on high speed. The low speed and pause modes do not work. Also, the wipers do not park on shut off. This is an article that appeared this morning up at cars.com about the 1997-2002 Rangers and Explorers that may have the same switch that is in question causing the fires. whats up bud. a little late to be up ain't it (for you)? btw, no i do not consider a ranger older than '01 "buyable" for my tastes. but you also have to remember that the old 4.0 still had more torque than your 3.4 or whatever engine you have in your toy. the reason i say this is that i have been spoiled by the power of the SOHC 4.0. ... The Ranger with the FX4 package uses a Torsen differential NOT a Ford part...why did they use this...who knows..probably to make it look like you are getting something extra for your money. The 8.8 with limited slip used in all other Rangers works fine. Please don't confuse this with the FX4 off road package on the F-150..It's just a new decal for the same package since 1997.
Ok. Taken from alldata.com (you are not going to disqualify THAT site too, are you?) Explorer 2001: The all-famous Supplemental Tire Inflation Label (sounds like someone is telling customers to change their PSI in tires). Other TSBs that sound awfully interesting: 1. Heater Core: repeated failure. 2. Front Axle: vent tube fluid leaks. Now why is that? 3. Here's my favorite, tells all about "The Ford way": Fuel Pump whine heard ... Read More

Mine's a 1997 STX 4.0L 4x4 Ext cab. Bought new in August of '97, it has only 40,835 miles on it. I have seen a few posts about the 'dumb dome', well now my alarm is going off randomly. Hi, Two weeks ago to date, I bought the cheapest 01 Ranger from a dealer here in Oregon. 8988$ sales price for an XL. I had this exact model of truck in 1997 and it sucked, really uncomfortable. Drives nice, looks beefy enough too, nice tires even though they say Firestone ... Read More
This would be the fastest Ranger, and with the auto, the best towing Ranger. Yet, I do not even see a 4.0L offered in a regular cab model that isn't a 4wd. And, like I said before - the Ranger finally gets the old Explorer engine - the overhead cam version of the old 4.0 engine that has been in the Ranger forever. As my history of Ford vehicles reminds me, the push-rod 4.0 started life as a 2.9 V-6 that originally came from Europe as a car engine. Ford thought it was strong enough to bore out to 4.0 and that was ... Read More
