193,500 miles running perfect
Vehicle
1993 Ford Ranger 2 Dr XLT Standard Cab SB
Review
I had my ranger for six years and it was recently totaled. Up to this point it was running great. I bought it at 104,000 miles and it would still be on the rode with 193,500 miles if it weren't for that 93 year old lady that hit me. The 90,000 miles I owned it I replaced the water pump, starter, timing belt and the fan belt. This was a very reliable truck. This was the 2.3L four cylinder!

Ten years later, still going strong

Bought new in spring '93 and it's only at 96K now;still looks/runs about as good as new. Beyond regular maintenance we've done no repairs other than replace a cracked clutch slave and deal with the poorly-designed parking brake. All the heat shields have been removed after they started to fall off (or rattle) over the years. Note: this V6 burned about 1 qt oil every 1,500 miles since it was new-- Ford claimed this was "within spec" and it's never really changed. Re-torquing the intake manifold bolts seemed to help for a while, but it certainly didn't stop the oil use.
Favorite Features
Fun to drive, comfortable, long bed great for hauling/camping. Good MPG.
Suggested Improvements
Hopefully they've fixed the bad parking brake and the silly plastic shift rail plugs that led to so many transmission failures. Oil use and intake manifold blow-by have likely been fixed.

1993 Ford Ranger 2 Dr Splash Standard Cab Stepside SB
Review
i have had the truck for about a year now, and i must say, stock the truck is peppy but after a few modification the truck has potential. i have a 93 Ford ranger splash with the 3.0 v6, i just put 1300 into it, new clutch, slave cylinder, timing chain, water pump, fan clutch, and rear transmission seals. Great truck though, its Ford Tough
Favorite Features
The motor, Just by putting a dyno max turbo muffler with 2" tips and 2 1/4 piping all the way back from the header to the muffler" No cats" and an intake along with the new heavy duty clutch i hae gotten about an extra 15 hp i love it.
Suggested Improvements
More Weight in the rear. i almost kill myself in the rain. Also Make a better tranny for it.

Not very high quaility

Truck needs a lower 1st gear.At about 100,000 miles, everything started breaking, power windows, door locks, overheating problems etc.I have been a mechanic for 20 years and have done way more maintance than the average consumer. Also from day one the plastic interior started falling apart.
Favorite Features
The electric seats are pretty comfortable
Suggested Improvements
Lower 1st gear,more horsepower and a 4 core radiator.

I bought this truck new in 1993. I have had another vehicle most of the past 10 years, so the mileage isn't too high (80K). Other than the leaks others have written about, no major problems or unplanned expenses. Exterior has held up well. Interior fabrics, carpet, and trim have held up very well. It is relegated to being a hauler & airport parker (to keep my "good" car safe at home), but I'm planning to keep it another 10 years.
Favorite Features
I still think Ford did a great job with the seat fabric this model year. I have the 4.0L V6 which I have never regretted.
Suggested Improvements
The plastic freeze plugs were just a really, really bad idea. I can't imagine there are still trucks out there that haven't had them replaced with brass plugs after 10 years (mine lasted less than 40K miles).
Great Truck!!!

This has been a great truck! Honestly, I haven't taken care of it like I should have & it needs a little tranny work but it still runs great! It's got 192,000 miles with the original tranny, front & rear ends, & brake calipers. It has great brakes & the manual transmission makes it a blast to drive. I've been in newer ones and prefer my '93. It's just comfortable & fun to drive.
Favorite Features
Manual tranny on 4.0 engine, only auto available on new ones, truck still looks great, & is very reliable! I can't tell you the hell this thing has been through & still, it got me home!
Suggested Improvements
4x4 auto lockers don't always "auto lock", but those have been improved on newer models, and gas milage. Would buy another if the new ones were built as well but from what I've heard, they're not.

My ranger had 55,000 miles when I bought it in 1997, today it has 183,000. Other than the usual maintanance of brakes, tires, etc, haven't had many problems, except one. At 100,000 miles I replaced the leaky slave cylinder and put in a new clutch. At 150,000 the slave started leaking again, but this time I had the dealership fix it, which set me back about $700. Now, with 183,000, I will be letting her go soon. I have the 4.0 V6 with the 5-speed. This truck still has tons of snap, doesn't leak a drop of any fluid and ranges from 20 to 22mpg.
Favorite Features
Power of the 4.0 manual and style, definately the reliablility.
Suggested Improvements
Correct pairing of the slave to handle the torque of the 4.0.
ok, but sluggish

i like to drive my truck, but it is a lil sluggish with its underpowered v6 and 4x4 that doesn't help since there is no axle lock(posi lock) of any kind. also gas mileage isn't what i expected when i bought it.
Favorite Features
looks good, 4x4 is good on icey roads
Suggested Improvements
make interior look less old mainly. find more power for the engine.

My Ranger has the 4.0L V6 and 5 speed manual. Purchased when I was in high school in 1997 with 55,000 miles. It was my first vehicle, so of course it was abused early in our relationship. Now, with 120,000 miles - it just won't quit. Still gets 21+ mpg highway, and the torquey engine has not faded. Replaced the clutch at 85,000 but that was the only major repair. Reliability is almost unbelievable.
Favorite Features
Super-reliable drivetrain. Strong engine. Comfortable front seats. Plenty of storage in X-cab. AC, Cruise, great sound with upgraded speakers/stereo (nothing fancy).
Suggested Improvements
None - this truck was LOADED when new in '93.

Excellent, reliable vehicle! I bought it in 1999 with 72,000 miles. It is now 2003 and the truck has over 106,000 and is still running strong. I have had no problems at all with the engine. The only two items I've had to replace are the sending unit and the exhaust system. I am very good about changing the oil & filter every 2500-3000 miles and the gas & air filter every 10,000 miles, and the plugs & wires every 20,000-25,000 miles... I guess it pays off! I love this truck!!!
Favorite Features
Very sporty looking
Suggested Improvements
Maybe a 6 cyl. in all models for more power, but I haven't had any problems at all with my 4 cyl. so it would be hard to tell!
