    Hello, I have replaced the starter, replaced the starter silonod, and the checked the wires to the starter. It is a 1991 Ford Ranger with a 4.0 engine, 5 speed. Can any one help it only clicks one time when starting and that is what it was doing before the new starter and silonod. The battery is also new. Please help.

    Try putting it in neutral. Mine is finicky about the switch that recognizes that the truck is in park. Seems to have plenty if battery, but try to start it and nada. Lift on the shift lever or put it in neutral and it starts fine. Sometimes its the simple things.

    Hey fordgirl, I have the exact same problem...really frustrating because it always seems to happen when i need to be somewhere. Anyways, did you replace a particular relay or do you just change them around when the starting problem occurs? If you could please let me know if you found a proper fix, thanks!

    Lots of problems on Rangers with the fuel pump relay. Bad contacts inside might let the pump still work or be dropping some voltage there. The relays are usually beside or inside the fuse box under the hood. There are from 1 to 3 identical relays there. You can swap them around, but a new relay is only about $25.     I would say that probably is true about the faulty relay box. But mine usually only does it when it's hot outside or I have been driving awhile.     Have you tried the switching the relays around? It is in the fuse box under the hood on the driver side. Try that then let me know.

    the 2.9 was the engine ford put in the 4x4 rangers from 87 to 1990. in 1991 they went to the 3.0 which is a totally different engine that was designed for the taurus. the 2.9 is more of a truck engine...it gets its torque lower in rpms. the 3.0 is more reliable. i have a 4.0 (which IS a stroked 2.9) and it is a great engine...go for it!
