2005 Ford Mustang GT Premium 2dr Convertible (4.6L 8cyl 5M) GT Premium 2dr Convertible (4.6L 8cyl 5M)
I was concerned and apprehensive when I went from a Mercedes C230 Sport to the Mustang GT Convertible. On day two I knew I made the right decision. This car rocks! The car generates amazing torque and speed. The exhaust and engine are perfectly matched; it makes a deep throaty growl when I get on the accelerator. The handling is superb. The first time I dropped the transmission into second gear going around a corner and goosed it, I'm sure I looked like the Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland; I had such a grin. This car is without a doubt more powerful, responsive and refined than the 5.0 GT I bought new in 1990. I am so happy with this car I want to sleep in it. Thank you Ford!
Power/acceleration, cornering and maneuverability (better than European cars), looks awesome with the top down.
More luxury options would help like ipod control through a touch screen, phone sync, rain activated wipers etc., but this is a raw power muscle car after all.
2005 Ford Mustang GT Premium 2dr Convertible (4.6L 8cyl 5M) GT Premium 2dr Convertible (4.6L 8cyl 5M)
This is the best car I've owned! No one single mechanical problem after 5+ plus years of ownership. I had the opportunity to run this monster on the German autobahn at speeds in excess of 140 mph with the top down. What an experience. Buy one, you will not be disappointed. Great job on this one Ford!
The simplicity in design with retro appeal.

At 61 years old and recently a widower, I asked my children if they thought I was going through a second childhood since I was considering purchasing a new Mustang GT convertible. They all said if that's what you want, go for it. I did. I had planned a trip to Las Vegas and decided to extend the trip and drive. I made a two week trip covering 5500 miles from Georgia to California averaging 23.5 mpg and drove over 1000 miles on two different days. The weather was great, the car performed flawlessly, and the ride was very comfortable. This car is not the fastest or most expensive on the road, but dollar for dollar is a fantastic value and a super performer. I'm looking forward to the GT500.
I guess my favorite feature is the acceleration especially when passing. A close second is the ride and comfort especially since I am 6'4" and have had no problems fitting in this car.
Kick up the horses a little and change the fourth gear - a little lower in the automatic transmission.
I ordered in December. from a dealer that had no allocation. Re-ordered in April, finally arrived June. Top ripped around window, factory just replaced. The A/C was better (colder) in my 2000. No inside glove box truck release. Why only 1 rear window switch for both. The key rubs your leg (should be higher). Shaker 1000 not worth the money, besides eats trunk space. Quiet, fast, good looking; no doubt this car is a classic. Even with the faults, where could you buy a better car for the money? Headlights are great for the back roads. Backseat not bad in a pinch. This car stands out in a crowd.
20+ miles per gallon at 75 MPH, MP3 player, quiet with top up or down, dash colors are great and the computer (fuel used, mpg, etc.) works well. I'm sure resale value will be super ... if I ever decide to sell.
Auto headlights, dimmer mirror, trunk release and light in glove box. More interior storage (maybe bigger door pockets, backseat pockets). XM radio. Bigger gas tank would be nice.
I can't decide what I like best about this car. I have had so many people stop and look at the car and just say "it's beautiful". Then I hop in and drive; it's a blast, it just rips off the line and handles crisply. The seats are comfortable and the wind noise is better than my old Miata. The only disappointment is the Shaker 500 stereo; it lacks sophistication and the CD player is very finicky with MP3 discs. The door mounted sub-woofers cause the door handles to vibrate and hum when handling low frequencies.
Convertible, styling, V8 Power, seats
Need an integrated CD/Navigation/Satellite Radio unit (like GM offers). Shaker 500/1000 is really technologically behind. I plan on putting in an aftermarket unit ASAP.
Purchased for my wife and it's an amazing vehicle. I own a Hummer and and BMW so this is the summer car and it delivers. Tremendous power, awesome interior (red w/ accent) and great exterior retro look. It turns heads whereever we go. Nice backseat room in comparison to other years models.
Power, the look and oh yeah ... POWER!
Seat memory. Nicer optional rims.
Mustang handles excellent. 6 speed manual engages easily. Pick up phenomenal. Convertible easy to put up and down. Ride is easy and comfortable for a sports car. Looks great too!
Sonic blue with tan top and interior. Speed!
Even though retro missing is dimming feature on rearview mirror and compass. Some things you get spoiled with.
This is as close to heaven as you can possibly get while on this earth! Though I must say that I would have preferred an original 64 1/2, this car is just as great to own, drive, and ride in. If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up; even if only for a test drive or as a rental car. This car will make even the biggest nerd feel like a star! I have been in love with these cars for as long as I can remember and this car is the only one that I would even consider categorizing as one of my favorite cars, beside the original 64 1/2 red with white wall tires and white leather interior and a white convertible top, with all original parts.
The whole thing!
Waited 3 months, but it was well worth the wait. I ordered without having driven a GT or a convertible. I am thrilled. The car is comfortable, powerful, & looks terrific. The exhaust sound is almost worth the price by itself. I get stares wherever I go. Ford has done a tremendous job on the Mustang at realistic prices. The interior upgrade package does a decent job of minimizing the plastic look & feel of the cockpit, although I would have been willing to spend a bit more for a little more luxury inside & a passenger seat with power controls.
Styling, power, exhaust sound.
Height and/or power for passenger seat, improved interior materials.
Great convertible, aero design, minor wind Great performance, cool sound, east to drive, The best one yet, Ford did it right this time.
Looks, performance and drop top.
Built in garage door opener, auto headlamps.
This is the first new Mustang I have ever owned and it is GREAT! I have an 89 LX convertible that I have owned since '89 and have had a '65 Mustang. This car is faster, tighter, better made and looks better than any Mustang ever built.
The vehicle is everything Ford designers intended it to be. This automobile is sleek in every aspect; the exterior and the old body design to the sporty look, not so much the European look on the interior.
This car caught my eye the first time Ford revealed it to the public, before assembly. I knew I was going to own one.
Please don't change a thing!
I traded up from a 1994 Mustang 5.0. What a drastic difference in performance, comfort and styling. Every day I catch people staring at my vehicle. The Shaker 1000 stereo system sounds better than my home stereo.
5 speed manual transmission.
The Mustang GT drives great and looks fantastic. It has very comfortable seats and is a pleasure to cruise in on the highway. I think its ultimate handling abilities exceed my willingness to explore them but when pushed through the twisties this car would probably put certain 2 seater sports cars to shame. With the 5 speed manual, the acceleration is outstanding and the incredible exhaust note under power makes the car a total blast to drive. Another thing I have noticed over the 4 months I have owned this car is that almost everyone who sees it, rides in it, or drives it wants one too. My wife loves the car too and we are extremely pleased with our purchase (our first Mustang by the way).
Seats, motor, upgraded dash, red leather interior, manual transmission, light clutch, general feel of the car, exterior appearance.
18" wheels with wider tires, slightly lower stance, power seat back, HID lights, larger more finished looking exhaust tips, even more power, 6 speed manual tranny, auto headlights and auto dimming rear view mirror, wiper on rear window? (well - maybe not).
I could never have imagined how many heads this vehicle has turned. Though it is a convertible it is really quiet inside with loads of muscle when I need it. Ford got this one RIGHT.
I love the design of the dashboard; it takes me back to the days of riding with my uncle when I was a kid.
Fuel economy is not the greatest, But if you stay off of it (who can do that?) it's not too bad.
I have driven a lot of cars and have had many many new cars and this is the best of them all. I have to say I sold a 1972 Pantera to buy one of these guys. This Mustang will run circles around the Pantera. Ford is on the right track with this pony. I say drive it first and you will be sold. Be sure to buy it loaded and the V8.
The engine, transmission, interior, wheels, exhaust system, and Shaker 1000.
Just one -- do a better job of painting under the trunk.
The seats remind you of a BMW, dash of the classic Mustang, Shaker stereo system is impressive with nice features like random play and has great sound quality. The turn signal sounds like a Cadillac. In fact the ride feels like what I imagine a Cadillac CTS would feel like. But the engine purrs like a kitty and can growl like a tiger when you step on it. The 2005 Stang redefines what a modern day muscle car should be. It is comfortable enough to drive every day and still enjoy it without regret. The only thing missing is a telescoping steering wheel for tall people who will tend to recline more. The steering wheel doesn't tilt down as far as I would have expected. This car is Revolutionary!
Tuned exhaust. Great muscle car feel. Shaker stereo system. 5 spoke Krager type older looking rims. Front grill, hood, GT fog lights, Convertible Z-fold with automatic roll-up down windows to get a good seal. Programmable colored dash. Comfortable. White with tan interior great for hot summer days.
Telescoping steering wheel. Temperature gauge and compass. Independent rear suspension. Scoop on the hood.
This is the first Ford i ever purchased. Going from a 2003 Lexus RX300 SUV to a performance sports car might seem crazy. However I am turning 30 next month and I need some excitement. It is awesome, fast, good looking, and just all around cool. Had to go with the automatic because of my wife, but the performance is not much different. This is by far my favorite of 8, yes 8 new cars I have had in the last 10 years. By the way I was only able to drive the V6 coupe before purchasing my convertible. GT. Thank you Ford for not letting me down.
Red Leather, MY color dash lighting (wife loves this). SPEED. Getting a Valentine for my birthday. Before the speeding tickets.
Still a little shaky handling when on extremely rough roads, but still controllable.
I looked at lots of different convertibles and loved the looks of the new Mustang. Bought it without ever test driving and what Pure Fun this car is. Handles great, great acceleration and turns heads.
Seats should go a little lower for tall people. Seat should go back to original postion when letting someone in back.
My wife and I have had this new Mustang for just a short while. We got the first one in. It is an absolute blast to drive. Every time we get in it the thrill level gets higher. Ford really did a great job with this one.
No top. Fast.
Things that I would change for the 2006 model: 1.The drivers seat is the most uncomfortable seat I have ever had in a car. Should be wider and more comfortable. I had to put a cushion on the seat. 2. Gas tank is too small; should be at least 20 gallons. You are at the gas station every time you go some place. 3. Stationary antenna should be a retractable one. 4. Passenger seat should have the option of having power so you can raise the seat. It's like sitting in a hole. It's too low. 5. There is no storage space accessible from the drivers seat. After you put a few CD's in the console you don't even have a place to put a map.
The fit and finish is the best I have seen on any car.The paint is excellent. With the top down it's fun to drive, not bad with top up too!
We purchased this vehicle and absolutely love it. It is the first new car we've ever owned and what a way to start. The power is unbelievable. It's 300 horse power is awesome. We would highly recommend the vehicle. The soft boot takes some time to get used to. But with a little practice you can master it in no time. It has a very soft clutch which makes driving easy even for the less experienced manual transmission driver.
One of my favorite features is the color changing dash board instrument panel. You have 125 different color choices. My favorite is the blue lighting. Also, I love the color accent package that is available for the interior. We have a black Mustang with red leather seats! Boy what an eye catcher!
The hand assembly to secure the convertible top needs some work. We already had to replace the clips and handles. I think metal would have been a better choice. Our 2001 Mustang convertible had metal handles and we had no problems at all.
This is an awesome car. If you love Mustangs, you will be a fan. I have owned a 1971 coupe, 96 GT Convertible, and now this one. No other Mustang has been quite as satisfying. It drives smoother, feels roomier, and has a lot of "giddy-up." The lines of this car are phenomenal, with or without the spoiler. The interior is very satisfying, although you won't get a lot of the European/Japanese fancy features that can be very nice. It is a muscle car and it feels like a muscle car.
The rumble, the power, and the classy feel at the same time. The turn signals even have a distinct sound that is pretty cool.
The backseat is still only good for kids, and only occasionally. Having to readjust your seat every time you let someone in the back is a pain. The '94-'98 models didn't have this problem. No matter how careful I am, my heel is scuffing up the plastic around the seat because the door subwoofer is so big.
This car is amazing! It feels looks and performs like a vehicle two classes above what it's in. For $33.5 loaded, you just can't get a better looking and performing car anywhere. To match it you'd need to spend at least $45k. I almost gave in a bought a coupe when they hit the market, but am so glad I waited for the convertible. Hint - to really change it and make its classic lines more evident, order it without the spoiler.
Can't think of any.
I've had my GT vert for a month and have put 2,000 miles on it. Love the appearance and all the compliments from strangers who just walk up and want to talk about the car. Wished the 2005 had some of the features that were in the prototypes but not included, like 18" wheels and the decorative intake cover. There were minor convenience things that were not included in 2005, like interior trunk release that I was disappointed in. The car is fast, but like many Mustang owners I want it to go faster. Computer thinks too much and the throttle by wire causes a delay when accelerator is floored for passing and merging. Would highly recommend but there are few tweaks that need to be done.
Styling, handling, front fog lights on GT. Once the computer recognizes you want it to go fast, it takes off like a bat out of you know where. The handling in the turns is great at high speeds for the axle setup.
Stop the throttle by wire delay PLEASE! It almost seems like the car is asking "Are you sure you want me to go this fast?" The answer is YES I DO! Interior trunk release and a liitle better quality on the paint. Not that it looks bad by any means, just think it could have been a little better.
This is one awesome car. Mine is a 5 speed and it sure does fly. It is incredible in the turns as well.
Ease of dropping the top. Muscular sound from tuned pipes. Incredible interior and exterior design.
Back seat room.
WHAT A SURPRISE...THE RIDE, STYLING, CONFORT, POWER, LOOKS, INTERIOR, QUITE, ETC, ETC...A MUSTANG USED TO BE A LOWER END, FUN TO DRIVE CAR.....NOW WHAT FORD HAS DONE, IS TO REDESIGN THIS CLASIC, AND MAKE A TRUE LUXURY PERFORMANCE CAR....THE RIDE IS SO SMOTH, QUIET, AND THE ROAR OF THE V-8 IS AWESOME....I HAVE HAD ALL THE TRUE HIGH END LUXURY CARS, YES THE ONES THAT START WITH F, P, J AND M....FOR MY MONEY THIS IS AS GOOD, AS ANY OF THOSE...AND PRICE WORKS FOR ME, EVEN THOUGH, I DID PAY THE BIG DEALER MARK-UP...BUT WHAT THE HECK, TO BE THE FIRST ONE ON THE BLOCK IS ALL WORTH IT, AND IT BEING THE METALIC RED, IT EVEN LOOKS FAST...LOVE IT!
POWER, COMFORT,STYLING,LOOK, ROAD FEEL, FEATURES...ALL GOOD!
CAN'T THINK ANY ANY...REALLY!
I owned a 1999 Mustang GT convertible. It was the most fun car I have ever owned. Until now. The 2005 is ten times better in virtually every aspect I can think of: style, performance, comfort, ride. While I've only got 1100 miles on this car, I absolutely love it! Differences between the 1999 and 2005 are as follows: Power - I am having to learn how to drive slowly, so as not to get ticketed. Build - there was a decent amount of torsion in the 1999 convertibles body. The 2005 is solid. It feels like driving a hardtop. Head-turning ability: off the scale! Handling - like a dream. The rear axle is solidly planted pretty much all the time.
Styling is perfect. Power is great. Exhaust note annoys the neighbors. Handling is wonderful. Color is pleasingly bright (yellow). More interior and trunk room than the previous model.
The top could go up and down faster. There is some squeal in the brakes. Ford could make more of the MyColor dashboards: when I got my 2005 GT, I found that the MyColor dashboards are scarce.
I have been waiting for this moment ALL MY LIFE. The new design is better than I thought it would be and the power and feel is SO sweet! It is truly the talk of the town. The Mustang will ALWAYS be a classic and I think people will be talking about this model for years to come. The back seats have ample room for adults and are surprisingly comfortable. The sound system is not the best, but can be personally upgraded to suit.
The different dash light colors.
It's hard to improve on perfection, but if I had to say something, it would be a better sound system.
This is my third GT convertible, not counting my wife's. They've gotten a little better each change up to this one - it's a major upgrade. The build quality, interior, comfort, interior noise, stereo, shifting, clutch, steering, handling, power, function, character and overall fun level are on par with anything for twice (thrice?) the price. The coup de gras was a coworker with an M3 saying he was jealous! And, if he offered a trade, I wouldn't take it! There is no nav option - wouldn't fit the character of the car anyway - but every creature comfort is there. Press on the throttle, or take a turn off faster then you should and you get to what makes this car great to own and drive.
Ponies under the hood! Top down driving. Top up quiet, interupted only by sweet V8 rumbling noises under throttle. The stereo (Shaker 500) and 60 MP3's per disk. The community of loyal fans and vendors offering any customization that suits you.
Cloth top is a must have option. Vinyl is a grade below everything else on the car.
After a four month wait I got my 'Stang. Have not had one in 20 years and what a car! I drive semi-performance autos and this Mustang GT blows them away. I am used to twice the price tag and I'd give the others away to keep this car. My Dad was with me to take delivery. He ordered the brand new '64 Mustang and waited over 4 months for his back in the day. He also worked as a Ford product specialist (trainer) for some time and has many track days under instruction. I let him drive back :-).
I actually wanted an automatic but glad I ended up with a stick. I love the Shaker 1000. The "Vert" top was an unexpected feature. My first ragtop.
The computer readout is packed with info but there is no outside thermometer/compass. Automatic climate control. Radio controls on the steering wheel - PLEASE! It is so much safer.
Wow. This car pulled me out of my Mopar's for the first time in my life (age 41). I have not liked Ford car designs for years now. Nothing excited me like this car (in this price range). I have the manual and the shifting is very smooth. For 300 hp I think the acceleration is poor but the sound is awesome. The sound is why I got the V8 over the V6. The handling is very "secure". The driving outputs match the inputs very well. The retro dash with MyColor is a great mix of new and old. I feel the 500 radio is more than enough for someone my age. Great convertible top seal so far. Low wind noise. Mentioned before on this site, this car sure does get looks! Screaming Yellow.
The exhaust system. The sound is incredible! The GT front grille (clip) has nothing to improve upon. The IP (dash) is classic. The large steering wheel grip surface helps with the solid feel of the car. MyColor, nuf said. Both armrests (door & center) are at the same height. Short shift of the 5 speed.
This car needs a 6 speed Manual. Or an optional shorter rear gear for mileage. My cloth seat is not comfortable (needs help in back position. When front seat is folded forward it will not retain previous position when pulled back. Child seat does not fit well in the back seat (will not sit flat).
I used to own a '69 Mustang Fastback back in 1980. Of course I probably spent more time under the hood than driving it but I honestly thought that the styling of that particular year and model Mustang was bar far the best ever. This year's design is reminiscent of the '69 design and delivers beautiful lines with the styling that evokes the same feelings I had about my '69. It is fast, comfortable and as an added plus handles like a true 2005 sports car. I have a fully loaded '05 Yellow GT convertible and I love it. It draws attention wherever I go. I truly believe that Ford has created another classic with this new Mustang.
Styling, power, convertible, interior.
Although Ford has always lacked the European and Japanese interior design elements, it has improved. This is one area where US cars have always lagged behind. This is the area I would improve. Interior quality
An e-ticket ride. The GT 300 hp engine is a rocket ship on wheels. I've had 4 Mustangs, my favorite until now was a red 3511972 Mach 1. This car is superior in every way in acceleration and handling, although Mustangs always do best when traveling in a straight line. Forget the back seats, this is a two person car. Nice leather finished seats are comfortable.
Aside the obvious positives about the GT engine, the "My Color" dashboard lights are fun - and about the only option you can get.
The radio and CD controls are slightly awkward and confusing at first, but they are knobs at least, but the biggest change I would make would be to have a little more storage space in the cockpit for sunglasses etc.
