Warning : 1999-2004 4.6 liter engines have been known to have the spark pug blow out of the cylinder head . Its happened to me and alot of other people . Ford didn't put enough treads in the cylinder which is aluminum and they will blow out. Now its going to cost me about 2,000.00 - 3,000.00 dollars to have the engine tore down and replace the heads or have inserts ... Read More
My thoughts......a Roush Stage 3 Vert is the most over priced car in the world thanks to the GT-500. Ford destroyed these after-market cars when the launched the GT-500. Folks are starting to buy these closer to closer to sticker every day, which makes paying $57k for a Roush insane. You sir, should write a letter to Ford thanking them for the GT-500. So, I think $43k or so is a ... Read More
I replaced mine at about 60k and 60 - 70k seems to be about the right time. You will notice a huge difference when you replace them. There are also tons of options out there depending on what you are looking for.
I have about 70,000 miles on my GT and am curious about when the shocks/struts should be replaced? I would like to replace with better than OEM if available. Any suggested brands and ballpark figure on cost? Thanks ...
Sorry, this is my biggest pet peeve (followed closely by spelling "brake" as "break"). First, you take up other people's time to answer a question that you could have easily found yourself. Second - it would take all of 3 or 4 minutes to look this up in the OM rather than waiting hours or days for someone to answer it. And since the OMs are now online ( https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp ) ... Read More
FYI - Ford and SVT produced less than 27k Mustang Cobras in the 4 model years 2001 thru 2004 (thats less than 6700 units per year). So I guess these cars were also "Limited Production". The fact is, these cars are demanding MSRP+ADM because of the Shelby name. Nothing more. Nothing less. And the folks who are actually PAYING $15-25k over MSRP now are doing it JUST to be the first ... Read More
That really surprises me, However I'm glad to hear the good news. I do know for a fact, that it will out run a Ford Crown Vic with a Police interceptor (not counting motorola) just the car itself. Yes they did. I really liked the last Mustang Cobra, 2003-2004. The SVT Lightning was a beauty as well. I've been reading a lot here about dealers charging stupid money over MSRP for this car. On a 2004 GT Convertible that stickered at $31,500 the margin was only $2,000. I just looked up a 2006 GT Convertible that stickers at $34,855. Invoice $32,171. That's only a $2,684 margin. I suspect the Shelby won't have much more margin than that. As far as waiting until they are sitting on the lots, good luck! This isn't like buying a Cobra. The Cobra was built for many years. I have a 2001 V-6 that is starting to idle at 2,200 rpms. It will go down to a more nomal rpm after some time and then idle fast again. I took to a very good mechanic and he said that he did not know what to do to fix it. He recommended that we take it to a Ford dealership for repair.
Yes indeed, the 350Z has had some problems, such as the excessive tire wear problem the first couple of years. Consumer Reports states that the reliability of the V8 is average, but the V6 is below average. Any clue as to what they are referring to? I was thinking of possibly getting a V6 some day, and the 4.0 is an old tried and true engine used in the Explorer, unless ... Read More
Consumer Reports: Mustang 2004 reliability looks excellent. MSN Auto: Reliability excellent. JD Powers mechanical looks like an excellent rating as well. The 2005 is rated lower on JD Powers for mechanical than the 2004. The 2005 and 2006 overall is a pretty good rating. And I would imagine compared to other Ford and GM cars of the past is pretty darn good for the first year. That said, it looks like ... Read More
Don't forget, people were paying MSRP and over to get the first 2004 GTO's too, which was crazy. Some were marked up $5k+ over MSRP. People were also "tickled pink" buying Honda Odyssey's in 2003, paying MSRP+ and waiting as long as 6 months for it. Personally I have never and will never pay MSRP for a car or wait for it, IMHO. Also ford didn't know that the V8 model ... Read More
I bought my GT Dec 9,2004 in Paris, Tex. From the get go I noticed the fuel shut off problems, then the poping coming from the right front tire area. At least that what they told me and the problem seems to be fixed. They have however said ... Read More
I see the same false conclusion to why buyers can't locate the manual GT version Mustangs. it is not that there is a high demand for this model, it is because there are so few being produced with the options wanted. The Ford website shows $1,770 for the shaker. The Mustang trunk is bigger because of the gas tank relocation on the GTO for US safety stds. Previous Mustang, 2004 the gas tank is right at the bumper. Just to name a few Performance V6 engines of 2004 that made the same 260hp or more then the V8 Mustang GT..... G35 with 260 - 280hp on 3.5L V6 350Z 280hp on 3.5L V6 Maxima 265hp on 3.5L V6 Grand Prix GTP 260hp on 3.8L V6 BTW Ford GT is twice the price of the Z06, I should hope it makes 95 more hp for $70k more :P
A 2004 Mustang GT had a performance 4.6L V8 only making 260hp. That is pretty embarassing for a V8. Most performance V6 engines of 2004 made that much power or more. In fact the base 4.6L in the Crown Vic only makes a paltry 224 hp? The only way Ford can make any real power out of their V8's is to supercharge them. Before we hear the old comeback of, "Well ... Interestingly, the Mustang has faced this dilemma before, and its history provides examples of both when it worked and when it didn't. Consider the leap from the retro design of the Mustang II (an attempt to get back to the proportions and style of the orignal 1964 1/2 car) to the Euro-futurism of the Fox body. Now that was a bold change...and it worked well. But on the other hand, there's ... Read More

The 2005 V6 Stang only comes with single exhaust from the factory. The only way it would have duals would be aftermarket. I wish Ford made the dual exhaust on the GT more prominent, like the duals on the previous 2004 or like 2005 GTO with big chromed tips. That can easily be changed aftermarket.
"Actually 66% of all Mustangs sold are Automatic." Yes. But the reason is NOT that the manual shifter in the current Mustang is a bitch to operate. It is that most people prefer automatics. But just because most people prefer automatics is no excuse for a company to offer a crummy manual. If I recall the 1999 to 2004 Mustang had the shifter in a awkard position. Only miscue with the Bullitt IMO is that it sports the GT's fake hoodscoop. The side scoops were changed to a wonderful streamlined, "scoopless" style, but the hood scoop remained the same. If Ford had gone with the same reverse-scoop hood that was used on the 2003-2004 V6 Mustangs (which itself is from the 1999 Cobra)...it would have made the Bullitt even more distinctive. I'd agree with fdthird about the 1994-1998s...it was about referencing Mustang heritage (in the rounded idiom of the day). The 1999-2004s did the same thing, but with "new edge" cues. The 2005 seems deliberately retro though. That front end alone... : ) Ford is going to ... Read More
Does anyone know if the 2004 GTO uses "drive by wire" (DBW) technology, yet? I am sure GM will move to it someday. I just noticed that the new 2005 Mustang will be using DBW, yuck. Audi has been using DBW for several years now. Their throttle has a nasty habit of waiting 1-2 seconds, before actually applying the throttle, but only sometimes, usually, when the delay will cause driver errors. ... Read More
Hi everyone. I am hoping to buy a new 2004 Mustang in the next few months. I have a Ford Focus and have been semi-pleased with it (except for all the re-calls that it has gone through). I'm wanting the full package...leather, moonroof, spoiler, etc. My question is what should I look out for when looking at Mustangs? We have a family friend that is a dealer at the local Ford ... Allright we keep saying the same thing here so lets just stop. I never said Ford wouldn't find a way to move them off the lots. I was saying that they will have to discount the Mustang to keep selling them like they will want to. Meaning that once they are discounted, people WILL buy them, which is the exact same thing as what you people are saying. And yes all ... Read More
EDIT: akirby beat me to the punch, but I'm goin' ahead anyway! : ) Nobody has suggested that Ford is not going to have to discount the remaining 2004 Mustangs. Rather, we have said that sales of the current gen. Mustang will continue, even in the face of the 2005 model. Sure they won't sell like hotcakes, but there will be sales... My point has been that there will be casual ... Read More
just wondering if anyone here could direct me to a website with fords official 1/4 mile time for a 99-04 mustang gt. thanks in advance for any help.
the 05 mustang gt will not have irs.it will supposably go on sell in sept/oct 2004. expect the price to stay the same or rise only slightly. remember the mustangs market is an affordable sports car, raising the price would alienate the target audience. i would expect price increases about the same as the f150. from what i have heard the gt will get a 4.6 3v v8, with horsepower in ... That's correct, if you go by model year. If you go by introduction date, which WAS a big deal with the Mustang, than it could be a 2004. I mean, this is just a car, you can play with the numbers without changing the course of world history :) Ford made the car, they can call it whatever they want whenever they want.
As rorr says, I think the Cobra in question is in fact the 2004. I believe the mystichrome paint job is part of the "40th Anniversary" package only for Cobras...GT and V6 versions will have lemans hood stripes. Never cared for the colorshifting paint myself, but I like stripes on pony cars... : ) However, I am a little dissapointed that Ford is choosing to commemorate the Mustang 40th birthday with ... Hello people, I've never posted here before but had to after I saw the new mustang at the auto show. Let me begin by saying the thing is madness(yeah it does have a clear roof)and it looks like Eleanor! THey had the MACH 1 and '03 Cobra sitting next to the "concept" GT and it made them look like has beens (think: the 5.0 next to a new Mustang)! I know, ... Read More
I've been reading about the new mustang, and I have a couple questions if anyone knows the answers. Will Ford be releasing the new mustang in 2004, or 2005? I've heard it both ways. Also, will there be an SVT Cobra still available?? If anybody knows, I would greatly appreciate it!
Gesh, I know I'm getting old, but not to realize that the 2004 Mustang is coming out and has the same appearance of my very first Ford Mustang, 1968 Tang fastback with the 289HP and I even added a 4 speed competition HURST in it. God, can't wait for the new one - Last time I got this excited - I licked the paint of my Tang !
personally I can't conceive of buying a hardtop Mustang. I've always been partial to Mustang 'verts. Owned one, may buy another. April 2003 will be the intro date of the new production Mustang. The should be in showrooms. by late spring or summer '03. The 64 1/2 designation was never actually used by Ford Motor. Those early Mustangs had data plates and titles that said they were officially 1965 models. I ... Read More
well, presently im in the market for a new Ford Mustang GT. I was gonna wait til november of 2003 to purchase - but it looks like i should just wait for this new one to come out. I went to the NAIAS show in Detroit to see the concept first hand - and I have to admit - that retro throwback styling is great. Even though I do like the ... Read More
The best picture that I have seen was on the Ford website at: www.ford.com After getting to that page go to the bottom and click on the "2003 auto show"link and it will show all of Fords concept cars at the Detroit Auto show. The picture is a concept but is 90% final (I was told some of the "toys" may be added or removed) but besides that this is it. ... Read More
Guys and Gals: I just came back from the Detroit Autoshow and wanted to report back to you all. The 2005 Mustang is awesome to say the least. The are plenty of new cars at the show (GTO, GTP, New Audi, Subaru's, etc) but nothing caught my eye as much as the 2005 mustang. I must be be thinking right as it was named most significant design for this year's show. ... Read More
The new 04 model looks like my grandpa's caddy on crack. I love mustangs preferably 88 and up. But this new model makes the Mustang begin to look like every other car on the road. Stop trying to bring back that retro look Ford! Mustangs are supposed to have that outstanding look. One that turns heads. Not this ugly thing. I never thought I'd see the day when a mustang began ... Read More
