The only available powertrain, a 3.0-liter V6 paired with a CVT, produces acceleration and gradability that are below par. Handling is secure but we found that the brakes tend to fade more easily than others.
The ride of the Freestyle is smooth but the CVT makes the engine sound drone quite a bit.
Overall, the cabin is well thought out simple and functional with lots of convenient storage nooks and bins, and plenty of fold-flat cargo space. Some of the controls, such as the HVAC system, suffer from an excess of look-alike buttons.
The conservative exterior design can't be mistaken for anything other than a Ford. Inside, the look is rather plain. The imitation wood that appears on some grades is far from convincing and way too reflective.
