My Freestyle I bought new in 2005 recently had the no start/difficult start occur. I researched TSB's on ALL DATA and found 2. One 10-24-5 was fairly new and superceded previous ones. It shows removing and cleaning the throttle body. And the same one or another one showed resetting the PCM with some "updated" settings. I cleaned my throttle body w/o removing it. I haven't drove it yet so I don't ... Read More
The lunging is not a transmission problem, but more likely dirty throttle body plate. I actually had mine replaced, because ti was an electrical problem The Government's investigation of the problem came up withthe same findings, and their books are closed. There were no recalls. Volvo had a similar problem on their XC90 SUV's. Like all used cars, an extended warranty is crucial. The problem with most people buying these cars ... Read More

I'm seeing that there are some upset Freestyle owners out there, and I feel sorry for your predicaments, however, you won't get that from me. I own a 2005 with 130,000 miles and have not had ANY problem with it. I suppose changing the oil every 3,000 miles helps. I also understand that ANY car is just another machine with moving parts, and thus will require maintenance and care to keep ... Read More

Another CVT problem with the 2005 Freestyle transmission. The car blew a 7" hole in the transmission on the Interstate out of Colorado Springs. fordwrench: If you look around reports on the internet and you will see that there are many reports of major problems between 60-70k miles. Maybe "happens" was a poor choice of words. I took my Freestyle to 2 Ford dealerships and got different answers. The first one in Southwest Florida is the biggest in the area and I think I remember reading that they are the biggest in Florida. Also, the ... Read More
Mine comes on occasionally when I start, but it's only for about 1/2 second. Are you using synthetic oil? That's what I use, and I'm wondering if that's the cause of it. I'm assuming your oil level is OK?
Recently my 2005 Ford Freestyle (38k miles) has been starting rough in cold weather. The oil pressure low light comes on for about 5 seconds, then it stops and idles fine. What could be wrong?
we have a 2005 ford freestyle awd limited , great car love the spaciousness the gas mileage is just odd when we first got it in the city it was averaging 16.0-17.4 in the city and like 18.0 in the highway i was like oh my god thats terrible well we drove it for a while couple tanks later, well a few weeks ago i made the discovery that if u ... My wife bought a 2005 awd Ford freestyle with 36k. On the highway driving at a steady speed from 55-65 the engine surges like 500 rpms it makes me feel car sick. It will do it for as long as you dont speed up or let off the gas. The car has been doing it for the 3 months she has owned it. We have brought it back to the dealer ... Read More
Sounds familiar.. and covered elsewhere if you bothered to do a search. There are a couple of Technical Service Bulletins on the Instrument Panel of 2005 Freestyle's that were manufactured before a certain date in February 2005. See your Ford dealer.
I believe there are several tsb's on the 2005 Freebie Instrument panel. See your dealer. http://www.ford-trucks.com/tsb/tsb.php/m-FORD/d-FREESTYLE/y-2005/t-06179
Bought this car certified used with 10k miles from Ford dealer in Sept 2006, it was about 10 months old; has about 26k miles now; needing new tires for winter; Conti tires are so-so; we really like it a lot having 2 kids, wife, hubby with room to spare usually; the engine and CVT don't seem to be any big deal; handles well, very smooth on hwy, takes bumps well, very ... We really liked our 2005 Freestyle when we first got it but then the problems started. At 16,000 miles the CVT (continously variable transmission)failed. The dealer replaced with a remanufactured CVT. I'm at 40,000 miles and there are problems with the CVT again. Now Ford is renaming the Freestyle the Taurus X for 2008 and it comes with a 6-speed automatic transmission (they no longer offer the CVT). The rear brake ... Read More
I have a 2005 Ford Freestyle purchased new in April 2005. I'm at 39,000 miles, and the fuel pump just went. I had it towed to my regular mechanic (not a Ford dealer). He confirmed that the problem is the fuel pump which would cost $250 plus labor to replace. I read my warranty guide and know that I'm outside the 3yr/36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty period. However the emission ... Read More
2005 FWD FreeStyle SE 27,500 miles (12,500 on replaced transmission) 8/30 drove daughter to grad school in New York City. Supposed to be a 3 hour drive but really took 5 hours with stops to eat, and 90 minutes to cross Geo Wash Bridge - 162 miles total one way. FS was totally packed with just enough room for a driver and two passengers. FS ran great. Did not miss a ... Read More
My 2005 has started a whining sound in low gear until shifting into higher gears then stops. No other symptoms. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
As I remember, Freestayle was designed for the 3.5 engine that was not ready soon enough. Taurus X is what the Freestyle should have been. I had the 2005 SEL and the CVT died twice and other issues. Ford took it back. I am thinking of Taurus X, because other cars I drove to test did not come close to the stability of FS, but I am afraid of quality and ... Read More
I own an 2005 Ford FS. The car accelerates by itself at low speeds during parking maneuvrs. Its gotten so bad that i have had to push the brake all the way down so that i dont hit another car. Has anyone experienced this kind od problem. THe car spent almost a month at the dealer and its still doing the smae thing.
CVTs provides a smoother drive plus better fuel economy than a traditional automatic and stronger acceleration than a stick-shift. The CVT is the automatic transmission of the future, and I'm glad to see Ford embracing this technology. http://cars.about.com/od/2001/fr/05_FreestyleAWD.htm The CVT makes the best use of the engine's power, and keeps it wide open under acceleration as the transmission ratios change. Because of the stepless CVT, there are no discrete shifts, for ... Read More
