I called again to file a compliant with Ford and the national highway safety! I have a 2007 that had the same problem. No warning just lost all power to vehicle on a very busy road! I hope they recall this soon. $2300.00 paid out that we did not have!!!!!!!!!!
We are in the same boat as you. We own a 2007! With the same problem! I have filed a complaint with FORD, national highway safety, attorney general and the national trade! Lets hope we are next!!!!!!!!
I, too, had a transmission failure on my 2007 Ford Freestar. Quit on me in a busy intersection (at 80,000 miles; the warranty goes to 60,000 miles) . I bought the car used so there wasn't a warranty available. I took it to a very reputable transmission shop and spent $3,900 (which I had to put on a credit card)--they told me I need to replace the radiator AND transmission, as ... Read More
We are in the same boat as you. Our went out with no warning on Tuesday October 18. I have filed a complaint with FOrd, NHTSA along with the attorney general and federal trade. Our biggest problem is no matter if we get this fixed it is not going to last. Ford admitts the problem is in the hood design. Water leaks down the firewall to the PCM module and then ... Read More
On Tueday October 18, 2011 my husband was driving home from work when all of a sudden he looses all power to the van. Mind you he was on a very busy road with several hills and blind spots. With looking into the problem we go on Fords Website and find that they are aware of the problem. It is a design problem in the hood that allows water to go ... Read More
I discovered this Hall of (Ford's) Fame this morning after my wife witnessed nice and quite death of the tranny in our Freestar 07. We got it here in Florida with 27,000 and had a 75,000 miles extended warranty which actually was worth having. It covered replacement of catalytic converter, on-board computer, ignition coil. Sure thing warranty was 2-months' expired when tranny died today on 82,000 :-( I am rebuilding it ... Read More
Has anyone had their transmission brake because of water in the transmission? In 2008 I had to have my transmission replaced because I couldn't switch my van into gear and the transmission was broke. In Nov. 2009 I had to bring my 2004 Freestar back into the shop to fixed my transmission and I had to get another new transmission put in because of the same issue. They also stated that ... Unfortunately, this has been Ford's response from the beginning and I have been at this since November, 2007 when our transmission went at 45K miles on our 2004 Freestar, leaving my wife and kids stranded in the middle of an intersection during rush hour traffic. They could have been killed. Ford does not care about its customers, end of story. I had been a loyal Ford customer for 25 years. The ... Read More
Have had van since Sep 2005., now with 109,000. No problems till lately. Same problems everyone else relates. Loss of power with no warning. No reverse. Will jump, buck, and chirp like a bird. In to dealer several times. Have had sensors, PCM , etc replaced. They "dry out" PCM, fabricate a shield, and say I am good to go. Still back to them as we speak. A very scary and ... Read More
I just hung up with Ford. This is the second time my 2005 Freestar has had the transmission go. The first time was at 39K in 2007, I am now at 65K. I am incredibly disappointed with Ford for not standing behind the vehical, and for not taking aim at this serious problem. Mine went as I was traveling on the highway with my 10 year old in the van with ... Read More

I am sorry to hear that our club has another member. Once again, it by the grace of God that no one got hurt. It is only a matter of time before this failure results in a fatality. Please follow up with NHTSA and demand that they expand their investigation to include the 2006 model year. Of course, it won't be long before the 2007's start failing as well. In addition ... I know exactly whats going on with this Vehicle. The computer is getting wet and shorting out. My 2005 Ford freestar did the same thing and was in the shop three times within 40 days, It had to be towed to the dealer on two occasions. First time they replaced the computer. Second time they replaced the shroud that disperses the water away from computer supposedly and dried out the computer. ... Read More
I ask because there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) about water and the PCM. Our mechanic thought this was our problem so we spent money after the dealer suggested to do this on getting the window sealed for any leaks, the engine checked and reset by the dealer, the PCM replaced by the dealer, the vehicle towed to the dealer, the cowl redone by the dealer, the engine codes reset ... In 2007 at 35000 miles the PCM got wet on my 2004 Freestar and was replaced by Ford, barely sliding in under the warranty and now today at 75,000 miles the transmission is gone. $2000 to rebuild. I haven't been able to read through all the posts here, but if someone could let me know what of any recourse I may have or who I should call or write to that ... Read More
I did get it figured out, thanks to this site! It is the Power Control Module (PCM). It was getting moisture in there and messing with all of the electrical components of my van. Since being fixed I haven't had any problems. There is a Ford service bulletin for this. If you look back a few pages of posts you will find it. I hope you can get it fixed. There ... Read More
Brenda, You are absolutely right! The 2006 models will be hitting the magic failure mileage right about now. I guess Ford's plan is to hide in the corner like the cowards that they are until the last model year, 2007 I believe, failures happen and those owners either pay up or give up. It is up to all of us however; to NEVER GIVE UP! Do not let Ford win. Lives ... Read More
2004 Ford Freestar trasmission died at 69,000 miles. No warnings or lights prior. Also I called Ford Service department to see if it was still covered under manufacture warranty. They told me "no, the warranty was only 3years/36,000 miles and that they didn't offer longer powertrain warranties until 2007. Left work one night, put it in reverse, worked fine, put it in drive and it went nowhere. No noises, no lights, ... Read More
I'm late in my reply largley due to the holidays and being a 48 yr old father/step father to 9 children. Thanks for your response. I share your passion for this issue which is becoming reminiscent of the early model Pintos (early 70's) with the exploding gas tanks when rearended. Funny how they disappeared from production just like these vans have. I believe 2007 was the last year. Only these Freestar ... Read More
I too have reluctantly joined this club of 2004 Freestar owners whose transmission has failed suddenly and totally while driving. I bought it in March of 2007 and the transmission failed at 79,975 miles. Of course this was 255 miles past the extended warranty, and of course Ford is so sorry they can't do anything about it. The dealer I bought it from, Koons Ford in Rockville, Maryland, has since gone ... Read More
I have been spending hours doing exessive research on this problem. The general forum suggestions have been new tranny or torqu converter. My personal mechanic eliminated those a while back and by the results shown in this discussion area, we can safely rule those options out because it did not resolve the issues. Then we are on to sensor issues. I personally, have replaced crank shaft/senor, cam shaft sensor (at least ... Read More
This same thing happened to me today, luckily I did not have my kids with me and safely pulled over. There was no warning. I was driving about 45 mph and it just stalled. No power stearing, no brakes, nothing. I tried to start it a few times afterwards and nothing. The Ford dealership said that later they drove it right into the shop and can't find anything wrong with it. ... Read More
Just to let you know that my Freestar is a 2007 and this problem has been happening since january of this year. Ford has tried to fix it on 5 different occassions... and when the 6th incident happened they were more concerned if I pushed the button of the computer they put in my van to record problems then my safety. Lets say i was too concerned for my life to ... Read More
God bless you for making it happen with your limited resourses and 3 children. When I read a post like yours, it literally sends a shiver down my spine because I know that you and your children are in harms way and Ford put you there. Hello all, just wanted to add my story to the board for what it's worth. I'll give the reader's digest version: I am an active duty Soldier stationed in Germany. I bought a new 2004 Freestar SEL in July 2004 from a dealer in Mississippi and then shipped it to Germany when I was stationed here. Transmission went out on the German Autobahn in Sep 2007 (34,000 miles). Had it towed ... Read More
Sharon, so sorry to "welcome" another member to the club! I won't go into detail on mine (I think my initial post is ~#118), since the story is much like everyone else's. I'm fascinated by your description of how customer relations classifies callers, since I really DID want to continue as a loyal Ford customer, and told them that. If they had offerred 75% or even 50% restitution I probably would ... Read More
I own a 2004 Freestar, which I might add comes with a significant monthly payment. Reveiws stated a minivan with comfort and reliability like never before. After 3 years of run time, and less than 70,000 miles, the vehicle of "reliablity" turned into the vehicle of "liability"! In late October of 2007, I left the parking lot after work, engaged drive and made it another 50 feet before the van died ... Read More
I'm a father of 4 with a stay at home wife. The second week in December of 2007 my transmission went out on my Freestar while i was at work. I had 49,000 miles on it and I got it brand new in 2005. I didn't know what to do so i had my uncle (who is a mechanic) look at it and he told me I would need a new ... Read More
Thank you so much for responding. You would think that Ford would do the right thing with so many of us, (THOUSANDS OF US!), having the exact same problem. The reality of it is however; that they refuse to step up and do the right thing. Sadly, it is a rarity for a manufacturer to do so without being forced to do so. In this case, the agency that could force ... Read More
I bought a 2005 freestar in march of 2007, I had this van 8 months. I drive it daily without any troubles, then one morning I get ready to leave for work and the motor revs and doesnt go anywhere. The Freestar is "All New",just ask Ford. Will the next van be marketed as "Really All New This Time"? New product cycle announcements are notorious for being optimistic. I find it very hard to believe that a replacement for the Freestar will be for sale by 2007. Consider how long the previous Aerostar and Windstar product cycles were. If the new van is only three years away, why would Ford go ... Read More
While the Honda minivans are priced about $27,000 and Chrysler about $35,000 (before rebates) you have to consider that Chrysler minivans offers much more than Honda. Simple things like heated mirrors; 10-speaker audio system; power liftgate; power passenger seat and memory seating; 3-zone auto climate control; and so much more, they are not available on Honda's Odyssey. And most of them weren't available at the last generation Toyota Sienna. Now Toyota ... Read More
Thanks for the link. I've downloaded the .pdf file (about 15 minutes on my 56K modem). I'm enjoying so much of reading information about the upcoming Freestar. However, there are many things I don't like, many things which I hoped so much to see an upgrade in the new Freestar, and many things which are even better ... Read More
