Re: Ford Freestar Tranny Problems???? [cowboys59]
Written by: tervmom on Mar 20, 2009 10:09:00 AM
Kelly, Great idea getting this out in any way possible. Just... ....wish you had included the 2006's - I think they have the same problem as I just had my transmission replaced because of the torque converter. Believe we have just started the 2006 problems as they get a bit more mileage. Mine went at 44,000. Brenda

Just Amazing!

I found this forum (unfortunately) AFTER my 2006 Freestar's transmission left me stranded in the middle of an unlit road on a rainy night on March 10th - thankfully not far from home or very heavily travelled. Had it towed to the dealership we have been very loyal to - all of our oil changes, just bought 4 tires for the van last month, a set for our F150 King Ranch ... Read More

RESEARCH
Written by: skihigh on Dec 20, 2008 8:41:25 PM
I have been spending hours doing exessive research on this problem. The general forum suggestions have been new tranny or torqu converter. My personal mechanic eliminated those a while back and by the results shown in this discussion area, we can safely rule those options out because it did not resolve the issues. Then we are on to sensor issues. I personally, have replaced crank shaft/senor, cam shaft sensor (at least ... Read More

I can certainly sympathize with you. I purchased a beautifully maintained (looks like it was hardly ever used it was so well taken care of) 2004 Monterey (the twin of the Freestar) and was so excited. The day later I found this forum. LOL So I'm in the same boat. No problems yet but I am waiting to be hitch hiking. One question I do have ... a former poster said ... Read More

Today my van completely lost power while I was driving 45 mph. There were no warming, shaking, or anything, it just died. Luckily I was able to pull over safely. It would not start back up. I had no steering, brakes, nothing at all. It was towed. The Ford mechanics said it later started right up and they can't find anything wrong. In fact the internal computer doesn't show any sign ... Discouraging Information
Written by: 3forme on Jul 7, 2008 6:20:30 PM
I own a 2004 Ford Freestar with almost 80K miles. About 2 months ago, the transmission began to shudder. At first, I thought it was because I changed my driving habits. I try to accelorate keeping the tach about 2K in an effort to save gas. The shuddering only happens sporadically now. After reading these posts (from May 2006 to present), I know the transmission is defective because of Ford, not ... Read More

I am posting this to vent my frustration just as much as agreeing with what other's have said. Here it goes: I bought my 2005 Freestar used at a non Ford dealership in August of 2006. On the way home we noticed a shutter. At first we thought it was the road and never driving a van thought it was just it's reaction to the road. About a week later we ... Read More

2005 Ford Freestar

I have not had a problem with my transmission YET but I have had a few problems and wondered if anyone else has them as well. First, when I'm driving down the road, the automatic sliding door unlatches and the lights come on and the dash shows the door being adjar. I was told by my service team at the dealership that it was impossible. I have had the problem since ... Read More

I Can't Believe It!

As I read all of your posts it makes me sick. We bought our 2005 Ford Freestar in February 2006. We haven't really had much trouble with it until two days before Christmas this year. It has 46,000 miles on it and the transmission indicator light came on. Ofcourse we had no idea what it meant until we looked in the book and discovered there was a problem with the transaxle. ... Joined the Transmission Failure Club at 49K Miles
Written by: sunburn on Dec 29, 2007 3:52:58 PM
The transmission in our 04 Freestar SEL died the week before Christmas at 49K miles. The preliminary diagnosis is a pump failure. I don't know yet if this is related to the torque converter problems since I believe the TC drives the pump. I will find out more details when we pick it up in a couple of days. The van was in park, and when put into reverse, it moved ... Read More

I went to the dealer last week and found there sitting about 4 new '06 Freestars. There are a few interior changes, the location of the door lock/unlock button which is more intuitive, and safer power window switches, but you loss the illumination. I don't know why, but it bothers me that all older Ford vehicles offered illuminated controls for everything, and lighted glove boxes as well, and on the newer ... Read More

SPARTANMAN, Yes the 3.5L is multi-valve 24V. Ford is keeping the Duratec name (including using it in other I-4 engines). Actually the Duratec is far mroe reliable overall, never had a history of issues or concerns. I don't wish to say it's as reliable as the old 5.0L 302CID V-8 which is one of the most reliable in the whole industry, but the Duratec is up there in reliability for Ford. ... Read More

While the Honda minivans are priced about $27,000 and Chrysler about $35,000 (before rebates) you have to consider that Chrysler minivans offers much more than Honda. Simple things like heated mirrors; 10-speaker audio system; power liftgate; power passenger seat and memory seating; 3-zone auto climate control; and so much more, they are not available on Honda's Odyssey. And most of them weren't available at the last generation Toyota Sienna. Now Toyota ... Read More

Freestar test

I drove the Freestar SEL last day. Just for 2-3 minutes, and had a good look all around the vehicle. The main 2 things which bothers me: 1) the 4.2L engine is sooo noisy - it sounds like a real truck when starting - I would say even more roaring than the 3.8L from the Windstar - where are all those sound-dampening material? all those best-in-class door sealers? 2) No more ... Freestar????

What's up with Ford and there 'F' kind of thing. By 2006 practically all of there vehicles except Explorer, and Mustang and Expedition and Escape will have 'F's in it. Not to get offtopic though... The Ford Freestar will be pretty behind all of the competition because of it's 200 hp engine. People will just keep on putting it behind because of that. I don't expect to buy a minivan, because ... Thanks for the link. I've downloaded the .pdf file (about 15 minutes on my 56K modem). I'm enjoying so much of reading information about the upcoming Freestar. There is a lot to like about the new Freestar over the current Windstar. However, there are many things I don't like, many things which I hoped so much to see an upgrade in the new Freestar, and many things which are even better ... Read More
