I believe you have FOUND the answer for everyone with this problem. (maybe everyone could just use your mechanic) LOL! Anyways, I have read several forums and most all of them are the same thing. news gets better , the freestar 2005 has an issue with water leaking onto the seal of the computer , it degrades then the computer is cooked . Has anyone had any luck with the 2006. Mine died last night in the highway with 3 kids in the car. Towed to Ford dealer and the torque converter needs to be replaced for only $1700. Ford issued a recall--- it's pathetic that they took years after the investigation was announced by the NHTSA. Your comments lack the knowledge of what it is like to be driving 60mph on the highway when the Freestar lunges forward, slips out of gear and dies. FORD FREESTAR RECALL!
Ford is recalling 2004 & 2005 Ford Freestars to replace the TORQUE CONVERTER! Replacement won't happen until spring as parts aren't available. Does this mean they're making NEW converters? They need to! I was hoping to sell my 2005...this makes it a little more difficult!

Just got off the phone with Ford.....they are NOT recalling the 2006 Freestar....that has the identical transmission/torque converter problem as the 2004-2005. UNBELIEVABLE! Will NEVER buy another Ford automobile!

2005 - 80K miles, all previous maintenance done by Ford. Shot Transmission just 3-4 weeks ago. 1st it all of a sudden started running terrible, then lost reverse by the time AAMCO started working on it. AAMCO came and got it for free. WOW the exact same thing happened to the jack on my 2005 Freestar, thank God I was not directly under the van while I was changing a flat on my right front tire. Haven't spent the $3500 yet - will probably scrap the car. My 2000 Windstar did similar at 30k+ miles. So I bought a new 2011 Sienna. I'm a Toyota man now.

Headlight problem 2005 Ford Freestar SE
I have a headlight issue with my '05 Ford Freestar SE. Headlights work fine on low beam, but when switched to highbeam, headlights go out entirely. Have changed bulbs and all fuses are intact. Any ideas? PS this problem is on both sides.

My transmission ended up costing me 1966.27. Once they got into it other parts were worn so I ended up having the transmission rebuilt. Mine wouldn't go into any gear. I hope you don't end up with the same problem. I parked mine in the driveway on a Monday night and got in it Tuesday morning and it would move.

For those interested, I'm complaint # 10283719 at NHTSA. I would encourage anyone driving a Ford Freestar 2005 with a transmission problem to file a complaint with NHTSA. My 2005 Freestar's trany died at 133,000 km ((82,460 miles) without warning in my driveway. Well, my 2004 Freestar torque converter just went AGAIN! We had it replaced at 79,000 miles and now tonight driving my daughter home from college it went again at 130,000miles. Why are the 2004 and 2005's the only ones being investigated? I have a 2006 and I had to have my PCM replaced. I had my van in the shop more than 25 times in 3 years because of all of the issues from the PCM. It was because of this site that I found out what the problem was.

I bought a 2005 ford freestar from Nassief in Ashtabula, OH. Up until Feb 20, 2010 it was driving JUST FINE. Then on 2/20/2010, I went to pull out of a driveway and NOTHING. 2nd Time for bad transmission
I just hung up with Ford. This is the second time my 2005 Freestar has had the transmission go. The first time was at 39K in 2007, I am now at 65K. Wow, aren't you a trusting soul. I never took my 2005 ford freestar to a ford dealership for any kind of work. All my work was done by 3 or 4 different shops or stations. Never the less, my transmission failed one bright sunny 100+ degree August day, during a slight drought period, at about 75K miles, on the entrance ramp for the 70 MPH Dallas Tollway. Today I filed a complaint against the Ford Motor Company with NHTSA concerning Freestar's transmission problems with particular emphasis on safety. In addition I have filed same with the Center for Auto Safety recently. I will keep you advised of their reply!

You are correct. The difference here is that the CEO of Toyota himself, who's last name is Toyoda, issued a statement accepting responsibility for the sudden acceleration issue and, in traditional honorable fashion, "fell on his sword." I think you have it partially right, there is Toyota America, run by americans, and there is world Toyota HQ in Japan. I have a 2009 Camry (made in USA) which I am trying to get Toyota USA to fix under their warranty and have already gone to arbitration...so don't fool yourself, its all about money.....

What we're seeing here is the difference between Asian and American culture and business practices. When something like this happens, it's a loss of face for an Asian, and simply unacceptable. It's unfortunate that more American companies don't feel the same way, and do the right thing. That's not nonchalance. That is systemic, intentional, reckless indifference and fraud. Mulally is "busy" trying to capitalize on Toyota's troubles. Ford Freestar Sucks... I hate Ford
Transmission just failed in my 2005 Ford Freestar. I am from Canada, and this vehicle has 120,000 kms (75,000 miles). My four young daughters were in the van when this happened.. The time has come for anyone that owns or has owned a Mercury Monterey/Ford Freestar and has suffered the scare of their lives when the car just stops and then you find out your transmission has failed to please, please file a report at "http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/. Hi, new to forum. posted my observations and fix on my 2005 freestar. could this info be useful in pursuit of recall? I found the Ford fix to be ineffective and got water in anyway. I think the infiltration is from inside as a result of poor quality control when insulating the cross member.

At our house, we switched from Chevy to Ford about fifteen years ago, but after this experience, I do not think that I would go back to Ford unless they did something to rectify this situation. My husband will not have a foreign vehicle in our driveway, but if the American manufactures keep building these "junk" vehicles, we may not have any choice.

I traded in my 2005 Freestar Thursday!!! I bought an 09 Ford Explorer (we have always had Fords). The reliability rating is a 9.0 on US NEWS, so I guess we will see. Can't get a better safety rating for the price either.

Tess, My 05 Freestar did the same thing as yours Sep 18. Only my transmission died when I tapped brake to shut of cruise-control. It never slipped, made noise , or ANYTHING !! There is most likely a connection between the PCM and the transmission issues. As I mentioned in my earlier post, my transmission had to be rebuilt for the same reason everyone else has posted. A month later, the van stalled out on the road. I ask because there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) about water and the PCM. Our mechanic thought this was our problem so we spent money after the dealer suggested to do this on getting the window sealed for any leaks, the engine checked and reset by the dealer, the PCM replaced by the dealer, the vehicle towed to the dealer, the cowl redone by the dealer, the engine codes reset ... My story... just like everyone elses. After stopping at a traffic signal, I was accelerating onto the ramp for the 70 MPH Dallas North Tollway in Frisco, Texas. With absolutely no warning sign(s) before failure, I lost all drive power.
