| Test Driver Ratings & Comments |
| Acceleration comments | Slow off the line, then gradually builds speed, eventually topping out at a limited top speed of 85 mph. Acceleration times were unaffected by the choice of D or L. Ovelapping the throttle and brake was of no benefit at launch. |
| Braking comments | First stop the pedal went almost to the floor. Firmed up slightly on subsequent ones, but always felt spongy. First stop was 129 feet; second stop was the shortest at 126 feet. Performance was fairly consistent, as the sixth and final stop was 131 feel. |
| Handling comments | Skid pad: Tires have little grip. It just wants to understeer like crazy and push wide of the arc. Changes in throttle had hardly any effect. With ESC turned on I could just plant the throttle and let the computer sort it out. Slalom: For some reason the EV feels like it has a higher center of gravity than the standard Focus, even though it shouldn't. (ED: the rear weight bias is 51 percent -- much more than the standard Focus.) Beyond that, the Focus EV could be a reasonably fun car to take through the slalom if not for the overly sensitive ESC system. Steering is reasonably intuitive and it turns in nicely. The slippy tires don't exactly help, of course; they squeal massively even when turning around to begin another run. |
