    I wouldn't replace the transmission without a proper diagnosis. "Probably" and "smells like" is not a proper diagnosis. For example there is a transmission diagnostic test that can be done -- it's kind of like a 'stress test' for the transmission. I had this done on my car.     Looks like I'm in for a rough ride. Would get rid of the car if I could! Unfortunately I also have a "96 Ford Explorer with some issues that I was planning to replace first. Think I could trade them both and get one reliable car? Anybody know any good repair shops in the Allentown, PA area? Keep me posted on your issues. I feel your pain!

    This does have the 'earmarks' of an electrical issue. The entire car systems are all electrically driven. Tim's response #348 is similar to your plight, however as he does not have a resolution... Personally, I would call around and find a parts or repair shop that will hook up your car to an engine reader for free. They are out there, you will need to make calls. Be straight with them. ...     I am glad that you have had such great "luck" with your car. I had the Focus serviced as recommended by the owners manual. That car was babied! I have since sold the 2003 Focus and purchased a Toytota Camry. I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER FORD!!

    I have a Ford Focus with nearly 150k miles - I have had absolutely no problems with it. I bought it new and would buy one again. I serviced the transmission like the owners manual said and everything is great - did you have all maintenance done? Consumer reports rates Focus as one of the most reliable cars out there.

    I thought Mazda designed both four cylinder engines, the 2.3L and the 2.0L, along with the transmissions in the Ford Focus. If I'm wrong, please correct me. The Mazda 626S has a Ford 3.0L Duratec engine, and in 2004 a Ford designed sport shift automatic transmission, that has problems.

    If the creak noise related to the hub caps is the only problem you are having with your 04 Focus, there is hope. You could of had all kinds of worse problems with the car.     My 2000 Focus did this just this week. You put the key in and go to turn it and it won't turn. I found if you hit it a good time or two you can turn the key but that is not recommended for long term. See the following link, I followed this guy's instructions and they worked great.
