2013 Ford Focus ST: Hidden Fuel Door

February 20, 2013

2013 Ford Focus ST

It's possible the Focus's fuel door is the most well integrated fuel door in the history of fuel doors. It complements the body lines and tail light placement and its gaps match those between the bumper and the rear quarter panel perfectly. In fact, looking at it the first time, I wasn't even certain it was a fuel door.

Nice work, Ford.

Too bad that can't be said about the interior pieces.

Being a product of the 80's, I missed the "filler cap behind the license plate" fiasco. Personally, i wish they would do something like that on the rear of the car again. I realize most plates are now located on trunks/hatches, making the license plate idea impossible, but having no holes in the side of the car seems appealing to me.

I'd say the old-school, fuel-cap-behind-license-plate-flap was the most well integrated fuel door in the history of fuel doors, but maybe that's just me. (But why do you call it a "fiasco," 330i_zhp? Did I miss something?) Also, one never had to worry about which side of the car the fuel door was on. Of course, if I remember correctly, it was a bit of a PITA to insert the nozzle with the spring-loaded flap fighting to re-position the license plate... Meanwhile, this Focus fuel door is hardly special to the ST, it having been on every Focus hatch since the 2012 model year. (But I guess if you've got to write something...)

I like that there is no fuel door button for me to forget to push before leaving the cabin and that there is no gas cap to lose when I put the pump away.
