Test Driver Ratings & Comments

Acceleration commentsThis is a willing little turbo engine. Its biggest problem isn't lack of power, but rather putting the power to the front tires in 1st gear. It likes to spin them up. Best run came with a linear clutch release at 3,000 rpm, with some minor backpedaling toward the top of 1st as wheelspin gets excessive. Six-speed shifter is a bit notchy and throws could be shorter, but it's not a bad gearbox.
Braking commentsSolid, secure stops every time with little nosedive. Pedal had a firm feel and remained so throughout. Consistent distances. The second stop was longest at 114 feet, third stop was shortest at 112 feet. Sixth (and final) stop was 113 feet.
Handling commentsSlalom: With the Fiesta ST's stiff suspension and short wheelbase, you could really feel the bumps in the parking lot leading up to the start of our slalom course. This car changes direction with ease. And like the Focus ST, the Fiesta is happy to oversteer any time you let off the throttle or turn in too aggressively. That's not a particularly handy quality in the back-and-forth nature of the slalom, but I bet this thing would be a blast on a back road without the usual front-drive understeer. Skid pad: Super easy to alter the Fiesta ST's attitude by playing with the throttle. It rotates in a hurry. Of note, we got the exact same numbers whether the stability control system was fully on, in dynamic mode or fully off.
