Summary

What Edmunds.com says

Ford's capable F-150 is our recommended pick for a full-size truck. With a wide variety of cabs, styles and equipment from which to choose, you can't go wrong. And while it doesn't necessarily excel in any given area when stacked up against its competition, its appeal and performance average out to best-in-class status. No wonder it's the best-selling vehicle in the world.

Pros

Wide range of configurations and features, capable powertrains and suspension, attractive styling inside and out.

Cons

Everybody and his brother has one.

What's New for 2002

A new King Ranch SuperCab arrives for 2002, joining the SuperCrew version near the top of the F-150 food chain. All King Ranch trucks get lighted visor mirrors with a HomeLink universal transmitter and a Travel Note recording device, while KR SuperCrews have automatic climate control and an available second-row bench seat that replaces the standard rear captain's chairs. Get the Harley-Davidson edition for a supercharged 5.4-liter Triton V-8 engine that adds 80 horsepower and new styling cues in the form of flame pin striping and chrome accessories, a new upper chrome billet grille, clear-lens headlamps and clear-lens parking lamps embossed with the label and rivets surrounding the center cap of the 20-inch wheels. The lower-line F-150 XL gets standard air conditioning, and its 4.2-liter V6 receives a ULEV rating. An FX4 off-road equipment package can be added to XLT or Lariat 4WD models and includes upgrades like Rancho shocks, skid plates, special wheels and unique trim. Carryover improvements from late 2001 include seat-mounted seatbelts on SuperCabs, child seat-tether anchors and rear head restraints on SuperCrew models. Also added late in 2001 were optional heated front seats (XLT and Lariat), a power sunroof (XLT and Lariat SuperCab and Crew) and a rear-seat entertainment system (XLT and Lariat SuperCrew).

More ground clearance for me, but as standard for the market is good, I'm planning to lift it

I have the FX4 with the 4.6 and five speed manual transmission. We are the second owner, love the pickup. Had it for over two years and had no problems. It has 110,000 miles on it and will drive it until the wheels fall off. We pull a trailer with it and pulls just fine. Plan on putting dual exhaust on it and will get a little more power out of it. Love the FX4 package and the ability to get the five speed in it, has been just as reliable as all my Fords have been

Favorite Features

Five speed manual transmission, FX4 off road package, will probably be the newest F150 I will ever own as they don't put a manual in the new ones

Suggested Improvements

Manual lockouts for the front axle

Review

This truck has been a workhorse for me on the highway. Some years I will put 35K on the truck. It handles well, holds the road great and takes strong winds in stride. This truck is very easy on tires, I got 70K on the factory set and will approach that with the second set.

Favorite Features

It holds the road like a car, it is truly a very good on the road truck.

Suggested Improvements

The fuel economy really needs to improve. 13 city 17 highway. The drivers seat becomes uncomfortable after about 1 1/2 hours on the road. The seat could be longer to provide better suport under the knees and the sides could be wider before the seat flars up.

Review

I love this truck. Never left me on the side of the road. Everything still original, except for tires. Still has original battery and shocks even. Had a 100,000 mile tune up done recently, which cost a bit (included engine flush, transmission flush and coolant flush), but nothing needed replacement. I expected something to be worn or borderline, but it got a clean bill of health. I plan on passing it along to my daughter for her first vehicle and getting another newer model.

Favorite Features

Very low noise in the cab. Handles like a luxury car. Light in the rear, but most trucks are. I'm getting 19.5 MPG HW and 18 City at 115,000 miles. With today's fuel cost, that's good news.

Suggested Improvements

From what I see on the newer models, I cannot think of a thing to improve on. If the newer models hold up as well as this and drive as good as or better, I will be satisfied (once I get over the sticker shock of the newer models).

Review

Bought the truck from Palmetto in Miami, with 20,000 miles on it, untitled, salesman's demo. We are very rough on interiors. (Kids, dogs, motorcycle dirt)and after 120,000 miles it is still in very good condition, no rips. The paint is still almost perfect and very shiny. The seats are very comfy for grown-ups and kids...full back seat. Back seats fold down, some storage behind seats. Good ride. One of the best vehicles we have ever owned.

Favorite Features

Comfy seats. Full back seat, not a 'half seat' like some others. Doors open wide. Fairly quiet for a big truck. Pretty smooth ride.

Suggested Improvements

Center rear shoulder belt, this may be available in the newer models.
