Review of the 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty

  • When it comes to diesel power, the Ford Powerstroke is hard to beat, but the heavy-duty trucks from Dodge and GM offer more modern interiors and better handling.

  • Safety
  • Pros

Rugged construction, multiple configurations, competent off-road, 14,200-pound conventional trailer capacity.

  • Cons

Poor interior build quality, vague steering, manual-locking hubs still come standard on four-wheel-drive models.

  • What's New for 2004

The F-350 incorporates minor changes for 2004, including a reclining front bench seat, 60/40-split rear seat in crew-cab models, newly available foglights on the XLT 4x2 and a two-tone paint scheme on the Lariat and Harley-Davidson packages. All F-350s sold in California now have a 3.73 rear axle as standard equipment. An AM/FM stereo with single CD player is now standard on the XLT, while a cassette stereo is optional. Finally, a power-sliding rear window is available (late in the model year) on SuperCab and Super Crew models.

Problem with 6.0 repeats itself

Vehicle: 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty 4dr SuperCab XLT 4WD SB (5.4L 8cyl 6M)

Overheating problem is persistent and common with 6.0 diesel motor. Three times the EGR cooler and Oil Cooler went bad. Three sets of headgaskets in first 100K miles. Coolant is always low because it loses it. This condition runs rampant in this motor. Ford will do nothing to determine or fix the root cause of the problem. Nor will they offer alternate transportation. Three year old truck has spent two months of that time in the repair shop. Ford considers this acceptable and they do nothing to compensate for lost time without work truck.

Not reliable at any price

Vehicle: 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty 4dr SuperCab Lariat 4WD LB (5.4L 8cyl 6M)

I bought this vehicle based upon the advertising in magazines about the towing capacity of the Ford F-350. I purchased the 4x4 Offroad, Lariat, Turbo Diesel. Since I have owned it, it has had the engine light on constantly and a whining noise when I go up a hill exhibiting no energy. Multiple visits to the dealership have not corrected the problem. Finally, this past summer, it " blew off " the turbo charge while I was pulling the horse trailer, on 4 separate occasions. It has been repaired on all occasions. And as Ford corporate states, " the vehicle has been fixed, Ford has met its obligation." Well I have a terminally ill vehicle and would not recommend a Ford Turbo diesel to anyone.

This truck has the best tow haul system with the way it knows exactly when to down shift and can stop a load just right. I pull a trailer 70% of the time I drive it and couldn't be happier. It can get on any road and into traffic no problem with or without a load.

Go ford or go home

Vehicle: 2004 Ford F-350 Super Duty 4dr SuperCab XL 4WD LB (5.4L 8cyl 6M)

Just look around, a Chevy or Dodge can never be found towing anything. You can't tow with those trucks. Ford super duty's come with 4 wheel disc brakes, I can tow a 6 ton trailer, carrying a 10,000 pound skid steer loader. You have to buy what works for real men in the construction and towing industry. Listen, 90 percent of all tow trucks built are Ford, case closed. Ford tough to make money, not to look cool and be comfortable, if you want that, buy a Mercedes.
