30 years of Ford trucks, first bad one
By John on
2003 Ford F-350 Super Duty 4dr Crew Cab Lariat 4WD LB (5.4L 8cyl 6M)
Purchased this truck new in April 2003. With the exception of the fuel economy claim in the brochure the truck was great. Clutch fan failed in Sept. 2003 and resulted in a reflash. This truck has become a problem ever since. 3 clutch fans, 2 sending units, rear main seal, fuel gauge, egr, chronic driveability issues that Ford cannot resolve. We purchased a new vehicle as we are now at the stage of our lives where we can travel and since new this truck has not made it through one vacation without a breakdown and shop time. Worst vehicle I've ever owned. 30 years of owning nothing but Ford F series pickups this is the first bad one and boy, is it bad. Should have kept my 2000 7.3!
Roomy cab, good ergonomics, trailer tow mirrors, availability of manual hubs and 4x4 transfer case on Lariat.
Get rid of the 6.0. This engine is just too prone to problems, as is the Torqueshift transmission. I would be much happier with a Cummins engine in this truck and the 6 speed manual along with a proper engine brake. That would be a "perfect" combination.
