Are Ford Explorers Junk?

  • Re: ford explorers are not good [chloe14]

Written by: jkaexpress on Feb 1, 2012 12:14:06 AM

I bought my 96 Explorer 4x4 in September of 2009 for a thousand bucks. I have put 160,000 miles on it in two years. I have had the usual wheel bearing issues with it (four in two years) but the tranny didn't start failing until this year. I think that's pretty good for 300,000 miles. The seats are a poor design, one of these days I might go to the junkyard ... Read More

Yes, I know what the connection is now. After filtering all the "intentional misinformation" for 5 long years from 2 dealerships, I have finally found out what is wrong with these crappy Ford and Mercury vehicles. Your story sound just like mine! You are losing antifreeze because you have a crack in your THERMOSTAT HOUSING. When I was at the Veteran's Ford Dealership in 2010, the service mgr told me to ... Ford Explorer Lease Questions

  • Bought Mercedes ML 350 Instead

Written by: ctowner on Jun 1, 2011 1:47:58 PM

I gave up on pursuing an Explorer a while ago. Not only did the pricing seem really high relative to the brand and the vehicle itself but the dealers, at the time I was looking, didn't physically have Explorers on the lots and I couldn't risk being without a car waiting for one specially ordered to be delivered. Happily, I bought a 2009 certified pre-owned ML350 instead and I love it. ... Read More

Ford Explorer Brake Problems

I purchased my 2009 ford explorer eddie bauer edition May 20, 2009. Had first break failure on 8/24/10 - dealer changed "booster". Second failure on 9/3/10 - dealer said there was a bad production of "boosters" so they replaced again. The breaks have now failed a third time on 5/16/11. Ford engineer cannot find anything wrong. There is something wrong that Ford is hiding and we will be the victims just ... Read More

I have a 2006 Ford Explorer with a very similar problem. I've had it to the dealer on two occasions, but am still having the same problems. They did put new rear brakes on and it did improve, but have had two episodes since the new brakes. Yes it is very scary. I came much to close to hitting a car in the rear on one occasion. No one seems to ... Read More

Ford has known about the problem since 2003 and doesn't give a crap. They cared a little up until 2009 when they discontinued their "assistance" program. You are on your own. On the bright side, you can order the part thru a dealer (I got mine for $120), and the instructions to replace it are online. Just need the part, paint & double sided automotive tape. good luck! (btw, I still ... Read More

2011 Ford Explorer

  • Not sure I totally agree with all your assessments, Explorerkid....

Written by: tgoodell on Aug 17, 2010 9:02:35 AM

I do agree that the 2011 Exlorer is no longer a true competitor in terms of off-road capability against the 4Runner due to its no longer having a true transfer case and 4WD, but keep in mind that like Explorer owners--the vast majority of consumers who buy 4Runners also never take them off road either. Being that Ford only sold around 50,000 Explorers in 2009, personally I don't think there's been ... Read More

I purchased a 2009 Explorer XLT Aug 10, 2009. MSRP was $36,845. Purchase price was $29,500 after $4,000 in manufacturer to customer rebates. It was the last 2009 Explorer in dealer's stock. It had been at the dealer since the first part of April. No trade in. No financing. I negotiated in person at the dealership. This vehicle had the exact options I was interested in. Also, the last of the ... Read More

Have a 2007 Ford Explorer. Automatic AC blows cold trough upper vents and to the right footwell and it goes warm from left footwell. So the warmer my feet the colder air blows in my face. A local Ford dealer says: "That's the way it works". But it never worked this way till July, 17, 2009. Does anyone now what the problem is? Need help. Please.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer with 48537 miles in it. I purchased it May 2006 and never had problems with it until now. I filled up my tank last Friday, 5/22/2009. The next day, Saturday, I drove to the grocery store and noticed that my "check gage" red light was on and my gas gauge was on empty. I obviously have plenty of gas so running out of gas was ... I love my 1995 Explorer and I'm ready to upgrade to a new one. But, I'm having difficulty finding one. You see, I have never had a desire and/or need for a third row seat. Unfortunately, ever Ford dealer I visit tells me that I would be hard pressed to find an Explorer on a lot without a third row seat, and that I'd have to order one without the seat. ... Read More
