I bought my 96 Explorer 4x4 in September of 2009 for a thousand bucks. I have put 160,000 miles on it in two years. I have had the usual wheel bearing issues with it (four in two years) but the tranny didn't start failing until this year. I think that's pretty good for 300,000 miles. I gave up on pursuing an Explorer a while ago. Not only did the pricing seem really high relative to the brand and the vehicle itself but the dealers, at the time I was looking, didn't physically have Explorers on the lots and I couldn't risk being without a car waiting for one specially ordered to be delivered. I purchased my 2009 ford explorer eddie bauer edition May 20, 2009. Had first break failure on 8/24/10 - dealer changed "booster". Second failure on 9/3/10 - dealer said there was a bad production of "boosters" so they replaced again. The breaks have now failed a third time on 5/16/11. Ford engineer cannot find anything wrong. I have a 2006 Ford Explorer with a very similar problem. I've had it to the dealer on two occasions, but am still having the same problems. They did put new rear brakes on and it did improve, but have had two episodes since the new brakes. Yes it is very scary. I came much to close to hitting a car in the rear on one occasion. Ford has known about the problem since 2003 and doesn't give a crap. They cared a little up until 2009 when they discontinued their "assistance" program. You are on your own. On the bright side, you can order the part thru a dealer (I got mine for $120), and the instructions to replace it are online. Just need the part, paint & double sided automotive tape. good luck! I do agree that the 2011 Exlorer is no longer a true competitor in terms of off-road capability against the 4Runner due to its no longer having a true transfer case and 4WD, but keep in mind that like Explorer owners--the vast majority of consumers who buy 4Runners also never take them off road either. 2007 Ford Explorer ACC blows cold & hot

Have a 2007 Ford Explorer. Automatic AC blows cold trough upper vents and to the right footwell and it goes warm from left footwell. So the warmer my feet the colder air blows in my face. A local Ford dealer says: "That's the way it works". But it never worked this way till July, 17, 2009. Does anyone now what the problem is? Need help. Please.
