Overall

Redesigned for 2006, the Ford Explorer is improved in all areas. It's roomy and nicely finished with versatile cargo space, but the lackluster V8 engine prevents it from receiving a higher overall score.

Dynamics

For a truck-based SUV, it handles well. But the V8 engine is disappointing.

Comfort

The refreshed Explorer rides well, is quiet, and has comfortable seats. Even the third row is OK for adults under six feet tall.

Function

The third row folds flat, and there is ample cargo and storage space. Interior controls are easy to operate.

Design/Build Quality

In general, fit and finish are good. The refreshed interior has nicer materials than before, but some hard-looking plastics remain.
